iOS 11 SDK April "new" app requirements

"Starting April 2018, all new iOS apps submitted to the App Store must be built with the iOS 11 SDK. All new apps for iPhone, including universal apps, must support the Super Retina display of iPhone X."

Does "new" indicate all apps submitted past this date or only "new" apps created and submitted, for example patching an existing app does not need to meet these requirements. The terminology suggests only new apps but I suspect this is not the case?

If you use current tools, you're obligated to iOS 11 support regardless.

Accepted Answer

Apple provided confirmation that this requirement impacts new and existing app submissions.

"Thank you for taking the time to reach out to Apple Developer Program Support about the new submission requirements for iOS 11.

We can confirm that the new requirements for App Submission are for new apps as well as updates to existing apps."

Does this mean that we can no longer target iOS 10 SDK and that we will be forced to drop support for 20+ % of Users ???? Or do we simply have to compile/sign the apps with Xcode9 and the iOS 11 SDK ??

Dear All,

We are slightly confused and need your urgent support. We have an app listed, and we are not planning to do any changes/updates in neartime. Can I safely assume that our mobile app on appstore will be unimpacted with this SDK update requirements, and continue to work for all existing users. Please also correct my understanding that new users with latest iPhone X or iOS version, will face no issues in downloading/installing my app and using it as seamlessly as like my existing users?

Appreciate your kind support, and help us to move in the right direction.

This is not the place to contact Apple -- use the Contact Us link at the bottom of this page. But the answer is it probably won't affect your existing apps. Nobody can say for sure except Apple.

I'm not sure this brings any more clarity to this issue, but I reached out to Apple asking if the iOS 11sdk and iPhone X support was required for updates to existing apps.

This was the response I received:

"Thank you for contacting Apple Developer Program Support about the requirements for new apps that began this month.

Starting April 2018, all new iOS apps submitted to the App Store must be built with the iOS 11 SDK.

This change only affects new apps. This does not apply to updates for existing apps."
