Thanks for the prompt response, it was very helpful. I was able to add checks in the UISceneDelegate and get the app to display properly, effectively giving us the behaviour we were hoping for.

This likely only is happening on a simulator. You can try using a device instead.

I've been experiencing a similar crash ever with Xcode 12 (and only 12) for months now. I included the output of the command and confirmed it includes numerous crash reports with various iOS 14 widgets. FB8737982 for reference.
A possible fix is discussed in another thread. You have to make sure to uncheck 'Include Configuration Intent' when adding the new the Widget Extension target.
