Using emojis on iOS apps

I created an app where I use People emojis as user avatars and Food emojis as, well, food avatars.

In all places where I use the Apple emojis I use them as UILabels or TextFields, that is, I use the font, and not captured images.

I want to know if this kind of usage is allowed for Apple emojis on iOS apps. I already know that I can't use emojis for example in my App icon (by the unfortunate experience of having my app rejected from the store), but in that case I had to copy the image of the emojis, not using the font as provided by Apple.

I could not find any clear guidelines of emojis usage, any information on this would be geatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I believe this may be relevant to your question: http://ideas.dissolve.com/tips/how-to-get-emojis-in-your-projects

"...we used Apple Color Emoji, a font published by Apple. As a picture font, it’s in the same category as fonts like Wingdings and Webdings, which may be used in any design setting, including commercial ones. As long as you’re not reselling or re-licensing the font, you doesn't (sic) need explicit permission to use emoji in their designs..."

I got thi answer for review team:

Guideline 5.2.5 - Legal - Intellectual Property

Your app does not comply with the Guidelines for Using Apple's Trademarks and Copyrights. Specifically, your app includes:

- Apple trademark, Apple emoji, imagery - or likeness - in the binary

Please see attached screenshots for details.

Next Steps

To resolve this issue, please revise your app and its metadata to address these trademark issues.

For your convenience, we've provided the relevant sections of the Guidelines for Using Apple's Trademarks and Copyrights:

Apple Logo and Apple-owned Graphic Symbols

You may not use the Apple Logo or any other Apple-owned graphic symbol, logo, or icon on or in connection with web sites, products, packaging, manuals, promotional/advertising materials, or for any other purpose except pursuant to an express written trademark license from Apple, such as a reseller agreement.

I'm surprised review didn't point you to their own ASRGs 5.2 Intellectual Property / 5.2.5 Apple Products
