iOS 9 Beta 5 Location Services Icon bug

Hello! I am on iOS 9 Beta 5 (13A4325c) (iPhone 5S A1530).
In Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services (ON) -> System Services, all the toggles are set to OFF or disabled. Just the 'Status Bar Icon' toggle is ON or enabled.
I have no pending reminders for the day, nothing in my calendar, all the apps requiring 'Location Use' are closed (nothing is running in the background). Inspite of this I still get the 'Location Services' icon in the status bar. 😐
I have been on iOS 9 Beta 2, iOS 9 Beta 3 and iOS 9 Beta 4 with the same settings to my 'Location Services' area and never encountered this issue. All the settings for every app are the same as compared to previous betas.

This behavious is true for Cellular Data. I have not checked this on WiFi.

Has any one else encountered the same issue?

Yes I am also encountering this problem on both cell and wi-if. Have been though all settings separately and also turned everything to never but the icon still remains. This bug was not present for me in beta 1 and beta 2.

I see. Do you anyone else who has encountered this issue? Any work arounds till now? The problem is that the battery level drops like crazy. If the phone is left idle, locked, the drop is hardly noticeable even if the icon stays there in the status bar. Otherwise, if you are using your phone the battery drops like crazy. This is irritating! I am guessing its due to spotlight search in Proactive. If by chance the location sevices icon goes away and I mess with Spotlight and Proactive, the icon pops up in the status bar again.

Update (9th August)

I got it! Finally! This happens due to 'Spotlight suggestions' and 'Bing Web Results'.

Do this to sort this thing out:

1. Open Settings -> General -> Tap Spotlight Search' -> Deselet both 'Spotlight Suggestions' and 'Bing Web Results'

2. Open Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> System Services -> Slide 'Safari and Spotlight Suggestions' to OFF.

This solved it from me. No other application was causing the trouble. 🙂

I found that the problem is caused by the location service at facebook, it was set as "always on" Problem seems being solved by changing in to "when using app"

I noticed this issue on Saturday while out with some friends. I am currently still showing the Location Services Icon even though I have all programs closed and everything within Location Services it turned off or set to "Never". Only when I completed turn off Location Services does the Icon go away. I've power cycled and it still shows.

I also forgot to add in my initial post that I am using an iPhone 6

Ah! I am so sorry I misguided all of you. I did what I wrote in the steps above and the icon did go away. But the fact is that when I restarted my iPhone it popped up again. What is more annoying is that with the location services icon sitting at the top the phone was taking an eternity to charge as well, even with the low power mode ON. Otherwise the phone would actually charge pretty quickly with low power mode ON. I took to the process of elimination and then started deleting all the apps one by one. The location services icon still didn't go away. So clearly no third party app was at fault. Also, I noticed that my Location based iAds toggle, Spotlight search suggestions toggle and Share my location toggle were turning ON by themselves. That was really weird as well. The phone was heating up as well through the whole ordeal. After toying with it all evening yesterday I had to take a backup and downgrade to iOS 8.4 as a new phone. All is obviously OK now. This looks like its a bug in Beta 5 and a pretty serious one at that. It makes the phone virtually unusable. Where is one supposed to report bugs? Any idea? Again, sorry for misguiding all of you.

For me it worked to turn off the "Send Last Location" in "Find My iPhone"... 100% charged and the iPhone wants to send it's last location? Must be a bug... ;-)

What I've found is that when on Wifi location services are still active because of your internet. It is registering your ip as your address and point of location. It doesnt look like a bug but somthing is keeping the location icon active.

If this helped please mark as it helped you 🙂

Update: I've worked with every conceivable "off" or "Never" option within LS and within the Find My iPhone feature with no luck so I just turned LS off all together and left it alone. Yesterday morning I needed to use my GPS app so I turned LS back on expecting to see the icon and to my surprise I didn't. I went back through and turned on the services/apps I usually have enabled and still no icon. As soon as I opened up my GPS app the icon appeared and everything worked as normal. I've had no other issues since.

The only other thing I've done since I originally discovered the issue is submit a bugreport to apple through the bugreport.apple.com site. I've received no response there though that doesn't mean it wasn't reported by others either.

Oh well, I suppose for now it is considered "fixed"...whatever it was to begin with...

I think I may have found a fix. 🙂

I went through all the settings from the suggestions above, but none of them worked for me. I instead opened up the "Find iPhone" app. Logged in, and approved the find my device popup. After that, I haven't seen the location services icon since. Seems like it's a permission bug for a new option in the Find iPhone app.

I've restarted and location icon pops up for a bit and disappears as per normal. Seems like that resolved it for me.

🙂 Hope that helps!!

thank you

I solved with find my friend and find my iphone, ok to all

then turn off and on the GPS

and icon simply disappeared

sorry, after a reboot today the location icon appeared and it is still there even if it seems there in no app or process that it is using location service.

I've reported the bug to apple... let's see if next release will fix it

ok, new update

it is definitely the 'find my friends' app

after 3 hours of active location icon, I tried to open this App e then, when I closed it, the icon turned off.

so, no doubt

it is a bug that starts when you reboot the iphone

Gosh! Everyone has tried so many things. Even in the 'Find My Friends' application the location toggle is a bit buggy if anyone has noticed. It switches ON and OFF by itself. Its a mess. Anyways, as far as I am concerned, will wait for the next beta release to see if this bug has been sorted out or not. Till then iOS 8.4.1 will have to do.

I'm also experiencing this issue after the update iOS 8.4.1, the GPS icon on the top right screen keep ON for 24 hours non-stop, and I feel signaficant battery drained than before. I have try and error by closing Location Services for apps but still the GPS icon still ON, somehow found out that it's the Location-Based Alerts that's keep the GPS icon running ON non-stop. [Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Location-Based Alerts].

After turn it off, the GPS icon won't appear anymore, it might appear sometimes just a bling and dissapear. It had been 2 days after this try and error, the GPS icon doesn't appear non-stop anymore. Hope this help 😀
