Unable to Boot after upgrade to El Capitan Beta 6

Hi - I know many othere have has this problem, but the solutions that have been previously outlined to do seem to work for me.

Upon start up, the apple log shows, and the progress bar loads normally until it reaches the end and then stalls with out any other further activity. I have been trying to follow the steps outlined by Max in this post: https://forums.developer.apple.com/message/39869#39869 and a couple of others

- I intitially completed a time machine restore from internet recovery mode. The same issue remained after the restart.

- I am unable to start in safe mode

- I have resarted in recovery and completed repair and verify disk permission tasks. All fine.

- I have restarte in single user mode, using:

fsck -fy

This first displayed 'file system was modified' message but this cleared on when run again.

- Starting in verbose mode, the final message that I see (and that is displayed numerous times throughout) is 'Can't get kextd port'

- I have completed a NVRAM Reset.

- I have attempted to complete the following based on a nother forum:

  1. Central Pane > Disk Utility > First Aid > Select internal drive / El Capitan partition.
  2. Then go to the Utilities menu, open a Terminal and type the following:
    • cd /Volumes/
    • ls
    • cd "partition_as_above"

Identify your 10.11 partition - perhaps "Macintosh HD" unless you renamed it.

    • sudo rm -Rf /Library/Extensions/VBox*
    • sudo rm -Rf /Library/Application\ Support/VirtualBox/VBox*
    • sudo rm -Rf /System/Library/Extensions/Eltima*
  3. Quit Terminal
  4. Reboot as normal.

My drive is called 'Samsung 500G SSD'

- I get stuck when tryng to run the sudo command. Each time, I get: sudo: command not found

I am going mad at this point as you can imagine! Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks,

Darragh.

Hi Max,

Not too sure what else I can do differenly to boot into the correct recovery HD. I do not think I am doing anyth unusual.

You are right it does seem to be an old version, but not too sure how this can be the case as I have upgraded to every version of OSX since I got the device. The resintall option only allows for Lion.

Yes - Apologolies for not mentioning in last post. I removed Duet, then little snitch when that didn't work, and both no longer appear under extensions.

I have removed Paralles a cople of years ago, but if there are still files there I probably missed something on the removal.

I have removed WavTap.kext and no change.

I was unable to run -1 /Volumes/Samsung\ SSD\ 500G/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/.panic

Output of tail -100 /Volumes/Samsung\ SSD\ 500G/var/log/system.log as follows.

Thanks for your continued assistance. Really appreciate it.

bash-3.2# tail -100 /Volumes/Samsung\ SSD\ 500G/var/log/system.log

Ah, okay - that's Internet Recovery Mode - distinct from Recovery Mode. If it's being triggered when you hold only cmd+R then your Recovery Mode partition is inaccessible and it is reverting by default. Cmd+option+R is the keycombo for Internet Recovery Mode. It's purpose is to restore the version of OS X back to the one that shipped with your Mac.

If this is the case then you fall into a minority (2 vs. 20 or 30 that I've helped troubleshoot) with a more profound problem than 3rd party kernel extensions causing a kernel crash as a result of the altered security methods of the recent betas of 10.11. Do you have a backup? Is there anything you need to salvage from the system that won't boot?

If the issue was that you were simply pressing option as well as cmd+R then we can return to removing kexts... In that case I can see from they log that I'd also need to go back further than the 100 lines you posted. Could you repeat the last command with 200 instead of 100 and cull the lines already posted from your reply.

Thanks Max.

I am pressing cmd + R only.

Yes - I have full time machine backups and another separate off site back up. Had a feeling it was going to be a difficult one!

Darragh.

Okay, good. Do you have access to another Mac (and better yet, can you connect it to the current one with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable)?

Other options are a version of OS X on another drive that you can boot into, or an El Capitan installer on a USB drive (the latter can be made on another Mac if you can get to one)?

Failing that, you'll have to wipe your Samsung SSD using Disk Utility in Internet Recovery Mode and then install Lion as a transitional step.

I have access to another MacBook Air (Running Yosemite), but no thunderbolt cable.

Okay, then assuming you have a 8GB USB drive (or bigger & USB 3 will be quicker) handy that you can afford to re-purpose then I suggest you make it into an El Capitan Installer using your MBA on Yosemite. Let me know if you'd prefer to simply revert the problem Mac back to Yosemite as that's a bit different.

You should be able to download a full installer of Beta 7 (first since Beta 1). Go to developer.apple.com/osx/download/ and click on "Download OS X El Capitan 10.11 beta 7". This should create a new redemption code for you. Then, assuming you are logged in with the same AppleID for the App Store on your MBA that you just used to log in at the website, you should be able to redeem it to get the full DP7 installer.

  1. Connect the USB drive to the MBA and launch Disk Utility, then select the USB drive from the left side menu and go to the “Erase” tab
  2. Format the USB flash drive as “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” and choose Erase to confirm the process.
  3. Now go to the “Partition” tab and change the partition layout to “1 Partition”, then change the name of the partition to “El Capitan Installer” or another name of your choosing (I'll assume "El Capitan Installer" for the rest of these steps).
  4. Click on “Options” and select “GUID Partition Table”, and click “OK”, followed by “Apply”, then quit out of Disk Utility
  5. Launch the Terminal application and paste the following string into the command line:

    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan\ 10.11\ Developer\ Beta.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/El\ Capitan\ Installer --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ 10.11\ Developer\ Beta.app --nointeraction

    • (if this returns an error then please post the name and location of the installer you downloaded)
  6. You’ll then see progress indicators as it completes, it is only finished when the last messages is “Done.”:
    “Erasing Disk: 0%… 10%… 20%… 30%…100%…
    Copying installer files to disk…
    Copy complete.
    Making disk bootable…
    Copying boot files…
    Copy complete.
    Done.”

When completed, the USB bootable installer is ready to go. Remove it from the MBA and insert it into the problem Mac and boot to it by holding down the Option key and selecting “Install OS X El Capitan” from the boot volume menu.

It should be happy to install Beta 7 to your Samsung SSD, leaving your user data intact. There's no guarantee that you'll be able to boot into the system after that but there's a fairly good chance and it's worth a shot.

If it doesn't work then you'll have to use Disk Utility from the installer drive to erase your Samsung SSD and install El Capitan to it fresh. From there you should have no difficulty restoring from a backup as part of the setup process.

Let me know how it goes for you 🙂

Thanks for the outstanding support through this Max. It will be tomorrow before I get this done but will let you know how I get on.

Darragh.

I have a similar problem. The old OS is 10.10, and I downloaded 10.11 Prerelease and install it, than can't reboot.

In the recovery mode, I want to Repair the Disk Permissions but it is gray and the tip is 'not available because the selected disk can't be written to'

when I try to reinstall OS X, the disk can't be selected and shows "the disk is locked".

what should I do and I don't want to erase the disk. Thank you.

Hi Jeyluta,

I can tell from your post that the issue you're having is not the same as Darragh's - you've got filevault and/or a firmware lock enabled on your Mac, which makes troubleshooting your problem very different. Additionally, it becomes confusing if people are trying to diagnose and troubleshoot multiple issues in a single thread. For these reasons, please start your own thread by asking a new question here: OS X 10.11 beta

Thanks,

Max.

Thanks, I have asked a new question.

Hi Max,

So - I managed to successfull resintall the OS from the boot disk and restore from time machine. Only issue I had during the process was I was getting a 'Software cannot be verified message' at the intitial install, but this was rectified by changing the system time in terminal. I erased the disk before reinstalling the OS.

I logged in post install and all was working fine, the OS was working as noral and all my data was restored.

BUT...

I shut down the device this morning and upon start up I continue to have issues. It will not boot up. I am prompted for my device password and the loading bar just appears and does not progress.

I do now appear to have the OS X 10.11 recovery menue rather than the lion one I had previously.

When I run in safe mode, I do see a message saying OS Version: Not Set.

Given that I have the update utilities options, I was able to successfully disable System Integrtiy Protection using the command you previously outlined:

/usr/bin/csrutil disable

There was no change after this was applied.

Strangly, it looks like my disk is not being recognised. In disk utility I see the drive and the partition (Samsung SSD 500G) but the verify and repair options are greyed out and it appears not to be mounted. When I select 'Start Up Disk' the disk does appear and asked to unlock before checking if it is a valid start up disk. It unlocks, but again same issue when booting.

As it does not seem to recognise the disk, I am unable to navigate to the volume to check if there are any extensions as per your previous trouble shooting tips. It looks to be another separate issue.

Can the disk be unmounted and remounted via terminal? Can encyption be tunred off from terminal?

Hi - Have just seen the question by Jeyluta and running the diskutil corestorate list command shows that the disk is encrypted. I did turn on file vault post install. Taking a couple of messages:

In addition, the fdsetup status command returns 'command not found'

Ironic that you now have a FileVault issue and Jayluta doesn't 🙂

Unlocking it is the first step:

diskutil coreStorage unlockVolume A4D69B45-5A14-47A7-9D61-31923BE5A948

It should prompt you for your password. You can also append -passphrase yourpassword

Once unlocked you may wish to decrypt the drive with the following:

diskutil coreStorage revert A4D69B45-5A14-47A7-9D61-31923BE5A948

Let me know how you get on...

Thanks Max - Getting the following error on that unlock command:

"Error: -69666: This Core Storage operations is not allowed on a sparse logical volume"

Unable to Boot after upgrade to El Capitan Beta 6
