Display not awakening after Beta El Capitan 15A263e install

Display not awakening after Beta El Capitan 15A263e install, I can hear the CPU running, however the only way i can get the display back is to restart,

Are you sure you don't have any other angry birds on your Mac? 😉

If so, I haven't heard a peep out of any of them.

I'd like to find another culprit, because then i would have an answer. Max thinks it's the automatic graphics switching, which it may be, although the wake up problem doesn't seem to happen when booted into Safe Mode, which suggests it is a third party program of some kind, rather than an inherent OS problem. Of course, it could still be the monitor.

Yeah, I've been following you guys, so I saw what was going on. I just couldn't resist making another bird joke… 😁

😁 Yes, I saw it and grinned to myself.

Ken, you're right that Safe Mode doesn't load 3rd party kexts but, as I mentioned earlier, it also uses a simpified set of display drivers ("classic" drivers they're referred to as), which are also more stable. There are quite a few others here (still very much a minority, of course) who are having display related problems even on a fresh vanilla install. The same problems don't occur for them in Safe Mode either, nor if they disable the normal display driver set (by renaming it), forcing OS X to default back to classic drivers even when booted normally. I'm not suggesting you do the same - I only mention it to demonstrate that 3rd pary software isn't the only possible cause of the behaviour you're occasionally seeing...

Max, yes, I forgot about those classic drivers you mentioned. Your posts are very educational to me in terms of how the OS works--I had no idea about most of this stuff.

Just out of curiosity, which are the normal driver kexts? It would be interesting to see what happened to the display and to the wakeup problem if I did disable them, or would I run the risk to crippling the computer?

I noticed how you spell the word "behaviour." Are you from Canada, or maybe the UK? If you're from Canada, we could have another type of problem here. I'm in Chicago--my birds are the Blackhawks, and also the Penguins (from Pittsburgh originally). Of course, you've got the Blue Jays this year.

Ken

I'm in the UK - it's 2am here - I do keep strange hours so I can see why you might be wondering 🙂.

You can reversibly disable any driver bundle by simply appending any string on the end of it's name. They are all in the /System/Library/Extensions folder and they are:

  • GeForceAIRPlugin.bundle
  • GeForceGLDriver.bundle
  • GeForceMTLDriver.bundle
  • GeForceTeslaGLDriver.bundle
  • GeForceTeslaVADriver.bundle
  • GeForceVADriver.bundle

The trouble is knowing which of them is pertinent to your setup. OS X makes that decision based on on your basic system (i.e. type and model of Mac) and also any external monitors that are required to be run, and whether it thinks that is best done the discrete GPU or not.

I'm not recommending you rename one or more of them but, the best way to do it, if it is what you want to do, is boot into Recovery Mode and open the Terminal from the Utilities menu (in the menubar) and run the following (it's a single long line and assumes that your main partition is still called "Macintosh HD", which it will be unless you changed it):

cd "/Volumes/Macintosh HD//System/Library/Extensions" ; mv GeForceTeslaGLDriver.bundle GeForceTeslaGLDriverDISABLED.bundle

How to adapt that to any of the other bundles, and indeed how to reverse it will be obvious to you from the structure of the command.

Max, that's very clear. Thanks. I may try it depending upon the results of the next 2-3 days tests with graphics switching off and then with the monitor discconnected, if necessary.

Your being in the UK may also explain your knowledge of the term pandemonium of parrots. I don't think it's used much in the US (no idea about Canada). My wife is sort of an amateur bird expert and had never heard the term, which, of course, doesn't prove anything.

Latest report. No problems until this morning, but not on first use at 8:04 AM. I used the computer briefly, then let it sit for 15 minutes until 8:18 or so, and it was frozen. After the hard reboot I looked and saw that automatic graphics switching was checked (I didn't do it manually, and had looked last night and it was unchecked before I went to bed. So either it happened overnight or between using it first thing this am and durng the 15 minutes I wasn't using the computer. I'll paste the log file below.

Meanwhile, I got an email this morning from the Apple Developer Bug Report people asking me for a sysdiagnose file, which I generated and sent to them, along with this log. At least they are paying some attention.

Odd that something is overriding your graphics switching preference without even a restart...

As you say, it's encouraging that Apple are paying attention, and interesting that they aren't treating your report a as a dupe of an earlier one.

Tomorrow's release of El Capitan will likely be a build beyond the GM, so I'm curious to see what it fixes.

Max, it's not clear when and under what circumstances the graphics switching preference is changing itself, since I only see it after a forced reboot. I just now closed down the system and rebooted and it did not check the box again. Last night I did have a second external monitor plugged in (not a 4K) in the HDMI slot, but remember, this morning it awakened normally, then hung up only after I stopped using it for 15 minutes. The additional monitor was plugged in the entire time, although I pulled it when rebooting after it didn't wake up. Unfortunately I didn't think to look at the auto graphics check box during that 15 minute period.

I wonder if there's a plist file for graphics switching?

My current EC version (preview) is OS X 10.11.1 (15B17c). We'll see if tomorrow's build will be different.

There's a System Preferences plist, but it doesn't store the actual preferences (counterintuitively enough 🙂) - I checked it to be sure.

There's a new build of 10.11.1 (Beta 2 - 15B22c) available as of about 4hrs ago.

That build hasn't come through in my updates--must not be a public beta. Maybe it's the same as tomorrow's release.

Ahh, sorry, yes it's developer only at the moment - it will almost certainly be available to you tomorrow though. It won't be the same as the release version of 10.11 however, you're already on a "later" build (that's the .1 bit at the end) than tomorrow's release version.

Here's one possible answer to the graphics switching issue from discussionsdotappledotcom/thread/4057885

The tendency of automatics graphics switching to revert to the checked state has been present for a while.

The remedy, they say, is to use the gfxCardStatus app, which can be loaded at startup, and set to "discrete only" as opposed to integrated only or dynamic switching.

When I set it to "discrete only", the automatic graphics check box disappears (after going back into System Preferences, Energy Saver), and then you have the choice of checking "better battery life" or "higher performance".

I've got it set now for "higher peformance" and will see what happens.

Update:

Wouldn't awaken again this morning, even after gfxCardStatus was running and set to "discrete" last night. After I rebooted this morning, automatic graphics was again checked, even though the gfxCardStatus was loaded at startup and set to "discrete".

My guess is that gfxCardStatus app isn't working correctly with El Capitan.

Next step will be to disconnect external monitor at night and see what happens then.
