Mac App Store Keywords Not Working.

I have an application that has keywords that are not working. For example, one keyword is a general name for the type of application the app is (say something like "Text Editor").

When I use the keyword to search the Mac App Store, I only get one page of results, but my app is not in the list.

Filed a bug

For whatever reason pasting the bug number will block me from posting on the forums....so I'll write the numbers out:

TWO-FOUR-EIGHT-ONE-FIVE-TWO-TWO-ONE

Using iOS, as an example, those lists may rank/filter your app so far down as to be invisible.

AppAnnie has a tool that lets you compare your keywords against ones deemed popular, providing some hints about how yours are doing at a given point in time.

Just keep in mind that what works and ranks today could easily change tomorrow, so I'd do considerable study to determine actionable changes before I pulled the trigger on making changes to your keywords in the store. At the least you should be able to identify which ones can be readily abandoned.

Hmm. Curiously, you're not the first person who has had trouble with the bug numbers. That happened to someone else a few days ago…

When I search "text editor" on my Mac (running 10.11.3 15D21), I'm getting 248 results (just over two pages). Have you tried restarting your Mac, using a different one, etc. to see if something local is affecting the search?

Thanks for the response.

The keyword for my app is not "Text Editor" but is equivalent to that (it describes what kind of app it is). The reason I mentioned that is because I wanted to assure everyone that I'm not referring to a "trademarked" keyword or another company name.

Aloha Macho Man, I have exactly the same problem. I have an app, Hula 101, that is an instructional app based on short clip videos of Hula steps. If one types in Hula 101 into the search bar, lo and behold, there it is, first in line in the iPhone apps. But, if one merely types Hula, or hula in the search bar, garbage results, with Hulu and Hola predominating. My first Keyword is Hula, so one might rationally think that the search engine would find the app. Not so, apparently the gurus that created the search engine decided that no-one would actually look for hula, so they must be mistaken and are probably looking for Hulu instead. Brian, a senior advisor for the Developer Support, advises me that he cannot comment on the workings of their arcane search engine, but clearly it is as bad as Google's, trying to guess what the user actually wants. One can force the search engine by entering "Hula" , instead of Hula, but one cannot educate the whole world with tricks to circumvent search engine algorithms. My conclusion is that my app is just not "trending" or popular enough to score high enough on the display ratings.

Hey Makawao,

I'd encourage you to file a bug report with Apple on this.
