No Sales of my app

Hi All

I have ported an app from Android to IOS. It has the same functionallity and look and feel.

My App is about history and has mostly a very positiv feedback from my Android users.

In Android Google Play Store I have an average of 18 purchases per day, without any advertising.

On Apples App Store I sell 0-1 Apps per day.

I know that MAC-Users (Visual-driven) are different then Android Users (Content-driven), but that gross ?

Does anyone has a hint, how I could attract my app to the users on the AppStore ?

Is there any good advertising network ?

It can be tough to get the word of mouth started. Forums, blogs, Facebook and other social networks can help to get the word out. You could offer some promo codes on places like touch arcade or macrumors, and to bloggers who cover your subject. For advertising I would look at Facebook to start with since it can be low budget and can do fairly specific targeting. Actual real live users posting about the app on forums is better I think, but it's kind of a chicken and egg problem...

It is hard unless get the attention of the Press or Apple. Getting discovered based on just popping up in an App Store search is very difficult. There are many threads like this (I recall) on the old developer forums and I'm sure there are some on these forums. If you do show up in the search results, you have to be in the top 10 of a good popular search query I think to get a good amount of daily downloads. Almost nobody scrolls beyond 10 and you can be better than your competitor but if you are further down the page it won't matter.

I've experimented with paid ads (Twitter ads) and I didn't find them to work well. I of course don't have a lot of money so I couldn't pour thousands of dollars into it. You can have an ad campaign drain hundreds of dollars within an hour (or space it out throughout the week if you want) based on clicks and what not and if you are only selling your app for 99 cents, you really need some deep pockets to pay for enough advertising to tell if it will actually work.

You are not likely going to get an answer here that will be helpful. Basically the answers will likely be one of the following:

1) Make a website for your app. Maybe a few youtube videos.

2) Contact the press and blog sites and hope they answer.

3) Buy ads.

4) Experiment with different keywords, though generally any advice related to keywords is always vague and I honestly do not believe that there are many people (if any people) who know how keywords work who don't work for Apple. They just get lucky and say it is because they have good keywords, or they are trying to sell you something (total guess, don't take it too seriously). On the App Store it is especially hard to experiment with keywords because you have to submit a new app update to change your keywords.

5) Take your vitamins and say your prayers.

I've been working on Mac apps lately. I don't know what everyones sales reports look like but I get the sense that you are either first or last on the iOS App Store.

Apple has constructed a secret team to explore changes to the App Store, including a new strategy for charging developers to have their apps more prominently displayed, according to people familiar with the plans.

Among the ideas being pursued, Apple is considering paid search, a Google-like model in which companies would pay to have their app shown at the top of search results based on what a customer is seeking. For instance, a game developer could pay to have its program shown when somebody looks for "football game," "word puzzle" or "blackjack."

I was wondering if you can help me.

Im currently doing my Final major Project at university and I have to write a business plan for an app (deadline end of the week!)

Would you be willing to help me with regards to why the app should go to the IOS store and not android, how much it costs etc.

Id really appreciate some help as I have no idea about app development!

Kind Regards,

Emma

Hello,

Hope you are well.

Just wondering (and REALLY hoping) if you'd be able to help me.

Im currently studying in my third year of uni and have to write a business plan with regards to a new app (deadline end of the week, eeek!)

I have no idea about app development, costs writing a business plan for it or ANYTHING.

If you would be willing to help me it would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Emma

Deveoplment costs are most likely comparable; perhaps iOS is 50% more expensive - it's all labor in development and Objective C programmers may be in shorter supply. The costs of distribution are the developer's fee of $99 per year, essentially zero. Try looking at the total amount received by all Android apps and the total amount received by all iOS apps and divide both by the number of apps to get a portfolio average of revenue per app. Also, see if there are any 'big' apps on both stores and compare their revenue in each store. You may want to consider a 'barrier to entry' effect on the competitive environment as per Porter's Competitive Strategy in that iOS requires App Review according to more rigid guidelines. An alternative value proposition is not looking at the revenue from the app sale itself but rather the market reach of an app - for example the app from Starbucks that lets you order and pick up at the store or all teh retail store apps that facilitate purchases unrelated to the app itself. Good luck.
