3.1 Payments

I have the following Mac App Store questions:

I want to start selling a new productivity product today that can best transition to a subscription model in the future?

For now, I want to try to do that using a single bundleID.

Start selling today:

  • free to download - this triggers a 7 day subscription to the ‘Full Version’
  • current in-app purchase to unlock the ‘Full Version’
  • a future in-app purchase, sometime this fall, that will unlock subscription based access to new and broader functionality also available in the fall.

Clarifying Questions

Is ‘Save to Disk’ a sufficient feature to make the ‘Full’ version? Is '10 Saves' better for some reason?

Is there a reason ‘Save to Disk’ should not be an in app purchase or be the sole distinguishing feature to a ‘Full’ version?

If a customer does not elect this future subscription: this customer simply retains either free or ‘Full’ functionality in perpetuity. Yes?

freeloadersDown continue to receive product enhancements in perpetuity, yes?

can the available set of in app purchases change over time for these freeloadersDown?

If a customer does elect this future subscription:

Auto renew will usually manage the customer’s view - requesting acknowledgement in/around renewal date.

A browser-style interface will continue to allow more hardy souls to self examine.

If the custom does terminates a subscription:

  1. Can I offer an in app purchase that locks in the current subscribed functionality in perpetuity?
  2. Auto renew continues until the customer acts to stop it, yes?

e.g. a developer might not issue new functionality for multiple subscription periods, the custom decides when the relationship is over…

I'm looking for all feedback!!

Is this an efficient product strategy?

Steve

>For now, I want to try to do that using a single bundleID

Keep in mind that wildcard IDs don't mix well with IAP.

Lots of questions.

Your app can sell a non-consumable product. If you do that then once bought, the additional features are locked in forever.

Your app can sell the features on a subscription basis. If you do that then the full features are only available during the subscription period. You can do that with a non-renewing subscription now. The user will need to resubscribe each period because it does not automatically renew. For certain things (like episodic magazines) you can use an autorenewable subscription. The user does not need to resubscribe each time period because it auto-renews. Soon Apple will open up what types of features can be included in an autorenewable subscription.

It is unclear what you mean by 'save to disk'.

'Save to disk' means that the Mac app cannot save new files to the disk until the in app purchase is made...

What else could it mean?

."...Your app can sell the features on a subscription basis. If you do that then the full features are only available during the subscription period. Please reply to the specific question asked:

Can I offer an in app purchase that locks in the current subscribed functionality in perpetuity?

>Can I offer an in app purchase that locks in the current subscribed functionality in perpetuity?

What else can this mean?

"Your app can sell a non-consumable product. If you do that then once bought, the additional features are locked in forever."

"New files" and "cannot save new files ...until the in app purchase is made" provides a context to 'Save to disk'

That feature is not sufficient if there is no reason for the user to save a file to disk. But if there is a useful purpose to 'save to disk' then of course that works fine. Your reference to '10 saves' suggests you might look into a consumable IAP that sells '10 saves to disk' or '100 saves to disk'. It really depends on how valuable a 'save to disk' is. You didn't explain that in your comment.

By the way, it would have been much better form to have not added the comment "What else could it mean?" - that added no useful information and might have been misinterpreted as snarky.

Apologies for the extra commentary! You are right. My bad.

So it seems I can today:

a real Mac Productivity App (not a toy)

free to download - immediately use fully functional (Save) for 7 days.

offer a non renewing consumable in app purchase to lock in Save in perpetuity

offer a non renewing consumable in app purchase for a 10 pack of Saves...?!

offer a 'Super Hot 90 Day Deal' -- a non renewing subscription (get past the Oct & new rules)

these early adapters qualify for lifetime benefit of lowest pricing (eg. X% off list forever)

When it becomes possible, a new in app purchase can be presented to all existing customers which will allow them to subscribe to new functionality.

At each renewal date I can offer:

1) another subscription (maybe at a different price)

2) a one time non renewing consumable purchase to lock in current functionality.

Just for the record:

If the customer, now at least a year old, elects to make that in-app purchase instead of renewing - this transaction, a purchase not a renewal, is not subject to the much appreciated 85% rule! Correct?

Thanks for evolving my viewpoint.

Accepted Answer

Let's parse it:

1) offer a non renewing consumable in app purchase to lock in Save in perpetuity

* this would be a "non-consumable" IAP not a "non rebewing consumable"

2) offer a non renewing consumable in app purchase for a 10 pack of Saves...?!

* this would be a "consumable" IAP not a "non renewing consumable"

3) offer a 'Super Hot 90 Day Deal' -- a non renewing subscription (get past the Oct & new rules)

these early adapters qualify for lifetime benefit of lowest pricing (eg. X% off list forever)

* yes, although it is unclear to me if Macs can have subscription IAPs.

4)....a one time non renewing consumable purchase to lock in current functionality.

* again, a "non-consumable" not a "non renewing consumable"

5).....this transaction, a purchase not a renewal, is not subject to the much appreciated 85% rule! Correct?

* correct - it would be 70%

WOW! Thank-you for the very useful (to me) answers and corrections.

They led me to 2 key revisions which I think (hope?) is actually easier to implement and easier to understand for the customer.

Use Case: Mac Productivity Business App (not a toy)

will eventually move into enterprise sales after inital sales validate codebase and localizations are functional

this is a staged roll-out - hopefully designed to utilize future subscription functionality with an existing pipeline of dev/test

Mac App Store TODAY

free to download - 'Save' not available

  • 'Save' - non-consumable IAP - provides 'Save' functionality in perpetuity
  • '10 Pack' - consumable IAP - provides '10 Saves'
  • 'Early Adaptor' - a non-consumable IAP - locks 'Save' AND lifetime benefit of lowest pricing (eg. X% off list forever) (priceGroup)

Mac App Store FUTURE

free to download - 'Save' not available

  1. 'Save' - non-consumable IAP - provides 'Save' functionality in perpetuity
  2. '10 Pack' - consumable IAP - provides '10 Saves'
  3. 'Subscription[x]' - a subscription IAP - access to enhanced functionality during a subscription period

At a renewal date I will be able to offer:

  • a subscription renewal IAP (maybe at a different price)
  • a non-consumable IAP to lock in current functionality.

Revision 1) No initial 'free' 7 day 'subscription'

this avoids any 'Mac can't do subscriptions complications' and also avoids a nag after 7 days.

freeloadersDown get to 'see' what they can 'buy' - that's easy to understand (you get what you pay for)

Revision 2) 'EarlyAdaptor' implemented as a non-consumable instead of a non renewing subscription

this avoids any 'Mac can't do subscriptions complications'

Question

Once subscriptions are available I want to honor the 'EarlyAdopter' but remove the 'EarlyAdapter' IAP as something that can be purchased.

As a non-consumable IAP it does not expire for the folks who acquired it, when it was a available, but it's not longer available.

Any problems with this? (assume receiptMgmt)

Any gotchas sticking out?

PBK: Your handling of this case is to be commended!

Keep Up the Good Work!!

Steve
