cannot spoof mac address (sonoma 14.0)

i have wifi interface name e1, and tried to run the command 'sudo ifconfig en1 ether 00:e2:e3:e4:e5:e6' to change my mac address to something random. it prompts for my password then it says

Password:
ifconfig: ioctl (SIOCAIFADDR): Can't assign requested address

then i run ifconfig en1 | grep ether and my mac address shows as the same thing. please help, thank you

yeah, Apple does dumb stuff like this all the time with no explanation. presumably it's because the US government pretty much exclusively uses Apple products, and the majority of those individuals are clueless when it comes to tech.
