iPhone/iPad: Using USB-Keyboard on lightning together with onscreen keyboard

We are facing problems with the following setup: USB-Keyboard is connected to an iPhone and an iPad on the lightning port. Once connected the onscreen keyboard doesn't show up any longer.

Is there a way to enable the onscreen keyboard together with a USB-connected keyboard? Anything we can do in the code to get the onscreen keyboard to be shown again?

I don't think so. The idea is that you've attached an external keyboard and are obviously going to use that for typing, so why would you want part of the screen to be taken up with a keyboard you aren't going to use?
