Beta 5 stalls on progress bar

I had Beta 4 running fine on my MacBook Pro 2014, and this afternoon I download Beta 5 and it started the update process. However, when I came back to the laptop, it was still on a black boot screen, with the Apple logo, and the progress bar at 100%. I let it sit for a while, and finally turned the laptop off using the power button. I started it up again, and it kind of goes straight to the progress bar at around 80%, and then up to a 100, and then it hangs. I have let it sit for a long time.

I have now restarted into Recovery mode to check the disk using disk utilities, and all is fine. However, when I boot again, the prgress bar goes to 100%, and the laptop hangs.

What's going on???

Wow, I did this too to get back to beta 4. Where comes the TM snapshot on macintosh HD from ?

Workaround to go back works now.

tmutil snapshot

Created local snapshot with date: 2017-08-08-212425

My MacBook Pro developed the same issue last Friday with beta 4: finishes the boot screen with the progress bar, and then stalls.

Reinstalling from the recovery partition wasn't an option, as the recovery software couldn't recognize the AFPS volume, so there was no disk to install the OS on. Oops! They'll have to fix that before release.

DP5 works here now.

1. I recovered TM Snapshots, as ssandhaus described already

2. SWITCHED of ALL autostarted programs and start agents OFF

3. updated from DP4 to DP5

4. voila it works now.

This *****. It takes me back to beta 4 and almost nothing works!! No diskimagemounter, no external usb devices, unable to turn it off... Beta 5 is a Joke!

In my case, the installation progress bar stuck at 80% per 20-30 minutes once time. I decided to shut down pressing power button (I have a MBP 2015 15-inch) and restart my system without apparently "problems" but for 6 or 7 times, my macbook was frozen in hard tasks using different software.

I recommend to reinstall the beta using Recovery Mode and selecting Re-install macOS, this option download again the beta 5 and reinstall the OS over your data but I recommend to have a backup of them.

I made it the long way after stuck at 100% progress bar... and a Cmd-R reinstall... stuck at 100% progress bar...

1. USB boot with Sierra Installer (Alt pressed when starting) - Used Terminal to delete the whole APFS partition and disk.

- diskutil list (check your disk info?)

- diskutil apfs deleteContainer disk?s?

- diskutil eraseDisk JHFS+ Macintosh SSD /dev/disk?

ps. You might need to restart after "deleteContainer" to see the effect...

2. Started with Cmd-R and made an Internet Recovery / Install to original El Capitan (MBP 2015)

3. Upgraded to Sierra

- 2&3 can be skipped, if you have fully working Sierra Install USB stick (I didn't)

4. Installed macOS Developer Beta Access Utility and upgraded to latest High Sierra beta 5 direct.

- this automatically made the volume again to APFS

5. Imported everything back from TM backup with Migration Assistant

All working fine / even better them before.

I ended up getting back to "normal" by way of a TM restore, using Recovery Mode.

I am now back to Beta 4, wondering when I should try Beta 5 again???

BTW - restore took some 12 hours, but I think that in part was because it went via WiFi...

I am cannot get my laptop to boot; I have a Mac Book 13" late 2016 with touch bar. I have been trying to install the High Serra Beta 5.

The flie system is APFS + encrryped

I have rebooted the computer at least 10 times and also reinstalled the OS in recovery mode.

I am currently booting the computer in single user mode & I typed the commands to mount the file system etc & then typed exit to resume loading.

The most recent ouput is

busy timeout[2], (60s): 'MacBookPro13.2'

busy timeout[3], (60s): 'MacBookPro13.2'

IOConsoleUsers: time(0) 0->0, lin 0,

IOConsoleUsers: gIOScreenLockState 3, hs 0, bs 0, now 0, am 0x0

busy timeout[0], (60s): 'MacBookPro13.2'

busy timeout[1], (60s): 'MacBookPro13.2'

Does this mean anything to anyone? This output is being repeated over and over.

As well, I am not able to boot into safe mode for some reason.

I have made progress & I am able to log in now (phew). In another forum post, Chris_st mentioned removing kernel extensions and launch daemons.

https://forums.developer.apple.com/message/248248#248248

Quoting https://forums.developer.apple.com/people/chris_st:

* hold Cmd-S during boot

* mount drive r/w (see instructions in the terminal output `/sbin/mount ...`)

* have a look at the kernel extensions in `/Library/Extensions` In my case I ended up moving `BlockBlock.kext` and `LittleSnitch.kext` somewhere else.

* I also removed some launch daemons + agents from `/Library/LaunchAgents` and `/Library/LaunchDaemons`. But I don't think they were the cause since they're loaded later in the boot process anyway, afaik.

I had some unque bits of software installed on my Laptop which I deleted :

- Duet Display for using iPad as a 2nd display

- Leap Motion Controller

And extensins for printer drivers, Adobe, Java. I cannot say which extension was the culprit. I also have a eGPU enclosure but that is not connected to my MacBook at the moment.

What's the accepted solution to this issue?

I've installed the OS again from scratch (both from recovery disk, and with the laptop in target mode), but after each installation the laptop doesn't get past the boot screen to the login screen. It seems that whatever is preventing booting in 10.13 is also preventing booting in 10.12 and 10.11.

If you have not done it, perhaps trying bootinng in verbose mode & seeing if there are any errors or conflicts with any extensions.

Hold down one of these key combinations on your keyboard immediately after pressing the power button to turn on your Mac, or immediately after your Mac begins to restart:

  • Command-S: single-user mode
  • Command-V: verbose mode

Hopefully, that would tell yoy more about what is going wrong in your situation. It may be the problem that I had was having with extensions was not the same issue as other people but it was the same UX with the progress bar being stuck at 100%.

So I did it almost like you described Miro and finally I got passed the stucked bar. Im not very good with terminal but this is how I did it.

restart and hold cmd S

typed:

sbin/mount

then you can see what your disk name is. look for whats after /dev in my case it looked like /dev/disk1s1

then type again (with a spacebar after mount)

sbin/mount /dev/disk1k

then type

cd /library/extensions

then type

ls

look for extensions you want to move. I had littlesnitch as the others described so I moved that from extensions to library.

mv /library/extensions/littlesnitch.kext /library

(note to make a spacebar after the directory name in this case littlesnitch.kext

then I moved a lot of other things

then I did the same thing with launchagents

cd /library/launchagents

type

ls

here I moved and removed (type rm space and the file you want to remove)

During this time I rebooted many times inbetween but I was still stuck, I was about to give up

but then I restarded holding down cmd -V

and voila then it started to download the installer and then I came back into my macbook! So I cant say what file/files was the problem.

It shouldn't be the solution to clean out existing extensions, but I appreciate it does the trick. Shouldn't Apple make sure that incompatibilities are sorted out before attempting the installation?

I found the culprit, at least in my case.

After a process of elimination, the BJUSBLoad.kext extension found in /Library/Extensions was the culprit. I went ahead and removed it using the following steps:

I logged on to single user mode by holding down Command-S.

Once in, I typed in:

sbin/mount

Found the name of my disk name, in my case it was disk1s1

Then I typed:

sbin/mount /dev/disk1s1

I then changed over to the /Library/Extensions by typing in the following:

cd /library/extensions

T

hen I wanted to view the listing of the directory, so I then typed:

ls

I then proceeded to move the BJUSBLoad.kext extension out of the Extensions folder right into the Library folder so it wouldn’t load during start-up by typing in the following:

mv /library/extensions/BJUSBLoad.kext /library

I proceed to reboot by then typing:

reboot

I was then able to log back in to my MacBook Pro Mid 2015 with no problem! Once in, I went into /Library/Extensions and noticed another Canon kext by the name of CIJUSBLoad.kext and proceeded to deleted it, in addition to the BJUSBLoad.kext I moved in to the /Library folder earlier.

Since then, all has been running smoothly! I hope this helps anyone in the same conundrum!

I rebooted 3 times and on the third, the progress bar filled and jumped straight in? I didn’t even login.
