App rejected for displaying content in a webview

Hello,

An update to my app, 8chen for Hacker News, is being rejected due to displaying 3rd party content (ex. news articles) in a webview (SFSafariViewController). Note that this is webview usage is not a new feature of this update - my app is already on the App Store [1] with it. As a Hacker News client, all of my app's content is submit and voted upon by HN users - the web content is not hardcoded or embedded into the app in any way - it is all dynamically fetched from Hacker New's official API. This is very similar to the Reddit app [2], which also allows users to view articles in an in-app webview.

Forcing the user to view the Hacker News articles outside of the app provides a poor user experience. Additionally, every other Hacker News reader app allows their users to view submissions in an in-app webview as mine does. As examples, please see:

Can any Apple admin help me out here? I do not understand why my app update is being single out. I have already tried re-submitting my app for approval in hopes of getting a more sane reviewer, but it was rejected again.

I suspect that App Review is concerned that your use is a violation of the copyright rights of the webpage owner. The law is unclear as to whether deep linking and framing is copyright infringement. If you are just pointing the browser to the website then you can go back to App Review and insist that such use is not a violation of copyright law. If you are removing adds and otherwise modifying the commercial aspects of the original webpage then you may be on less solid grounds.

The fact that your earlier version or other apps are 'doing the same thing' won't work. You may be able to get App Review to reject the other apps - if that's your goal.
