How to Fix Cracking and Popping Sound ?

Hello, is it anyone here ( or on this planet ) that can help with this issue on Catalina Mac OS 10.15.5 Beta 3 (19F72f).

I am using MacBook Pro 16 inches. 😟

  • Same issue but with a new iMac 10-core i9....running Big Sur 11.6.1. I don't seem to have CoreAudio in my Activity Monitor to close and restart as others have recommended.

  • I have the same issue after upgrading to Monterey 12.0.1. The sound continuously cracking both for output and input streams. I'm on Macbook Pro 13` 2015 (i5 2.9).

  • Running Big Sur (v 11.6.2) on an MacBook Pro (13" | 2019) -- making sure that the ONLY application running is the one that you need/want to get audio from (in my case using Chrome)... so I had to quit FireFox, and Zoom applications and BOOM!!!! All of the choppy-ness is GONE and audio sounds WAAAAY better.... so, thanks to those who mentioned quitting other applications to fix this annoying problem!!!!

I'm experiencing the same annoying issue with macOS Monterey 12.2.1 on MacBook Pro 14'', 2021. Apple, please solve this.

Also happens when no Intel apps or kexts are running at all.

HALC_ProxyIOContext::IOWorkLoop: failed to send the final message to the server, Error: 0x10000003

HALC_ProxyIOContext::IOWorkLoop: skipping cycle due to overload

Problem occurs more often USB 3.X devices rather than USB 2.0, switching between them gives instant pops on one but not the other.

Have the same problem with my macbook pro 14" 2021 on 12.3.1

I place all my hopes in the arrival of the next version of macOS... Do some of you have installed the beta version of macOS Ventura ?

  • Yes, but the issue is still there with Ventura (

Same issue on a 1 month old macbook pro 14 2021. Glad I found this thread before it was too late.

Immediately returning mine to Costco for a refund. I won't be purchasing anything else Apple for me or my family, or recommending to friends, until this is fixed.

  • Same laptop as mine, same issue. No solution up to now, Apple insists it's not a hardware issue.

  • I bet this has cost Apple a LOT of money that they just keep ignoring

I found this solution:

What helped for me was using the following commands in your terminal:

sudo killall coreaudiod

and after that one copy and paste the complete sentence below:

sudo launchctl stop com.apple.audio.coreaudiod && sudo launchctl start com.apple.audio.coreau

  • Thanks for sharing. It really looks one of the most known solution but unfortunately it's a temporarily fix. Cracking still there after some hours.

  • Only a temporary fix, sound starts crackling again after an hour or two.

What's everyone feed back after last Monterey update ? Monterey 12.5 (21G72)

  • I've had the issue since I installed (I forget) Monterey 12.2/3, 12.5 has not been the solution.

  • UPDATE: After doing the above mentioned steps (reseting audio config and changing Hz) on Monterey 12.5 haven't heard popping since. Nearly a week so fingers crossed.

Same issue here. Running 12.4 Monterey, M1 Pro 14-inch 2021. Already reinstalled and formated my laptop.

Same issue. I've tried many fixes in this thread with no luck or at least temporarily resolved. M1 Pro, 16" - 2021, Monterey 12.4.

This is incredibly annoying and pretty poor that it hasn't been addressed by this point based on the number of users with this issue....

No one at the Apple Store at the Genius Bar could help me either. Whenever I compile something with XCode, the sound starts cracking. Running 12.4 Monterey, M1 Pro 14-inch 2021.

I am on my third week with no issues. So if you are desperate to fix this, you should do a clean macOS install/reset

  • This doesn't help, I've done clean installs and gotten new Macs the past month (M1 Studio and M2 Macbook Pro) and both have the issue.

  • Seriously @tmkaeld, even the new M2 models? That's insane. How did they destroy software so hard? I really dislike listening to music from my 3000 euros laptop, and I love music, owning cds, >500GB of music. I wish i could replace it. If they take a long time to fix it there is no way I'll pick a mac next time. It's a perfect otherwise machine but I can't stand this every time I put my headphones and moving my mouse listening to buzzing sound or clicking sound when cpu is getting pushed.

  • I had the sound issue on my Intel Mac Mini 2018 as well, seems that every Mac with Apple T1 or T2 security chips has this issue.

Tried clean reinstall, no luck :(

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021) MacOS 12.4 (21F79

Same issue here on Monterey 12.5 on 16" M1 Pro Macbook Pro. Crazy to have this issue on such an expensive "Pro" machine!

Hi guys,

I have the same problem on my 16" M1 Max with 64 GB RAM. Not maxing out neither CPU nor RAM. It only happens when running Parallels, though. A sudo killall coreaudiod solves the problem temporarily.

It seems like a problem in coreaudiod or on the kernel level.

Monitoring the system logs with the Console app yields more or less the same error log entries each time a crackle is heard (noticing the mention of an Audio IO Overload):

I hope this helps, Thomas

Same issue on a brand new iMac M1 with 12.4. After upgrade to 12.5 worked fine a few days but it comes back really bad. Very disappointed.

  • After many attempts I was able to find a solution for this problem. In my case I tried using two audio cards, one for the output and as a clock source and another one only for the inputs. Thus the problem disappeared. I leave details of my setup:

iMac 24 M1 8GB Audio interface output and clock source: Scarlett Solo Audio input interface: Behringer FCA 1616

Audio drops and glitches disappeared in both Ableton Live 10 and 11 and Logic Pro.

    Hope it helps!
