Macbook Pro retina won't boot after El Capitan GM update from Yosemite

I successfully installed El Capitan GM (upgraded from Yosemite) and the machine was working fine right after the install, I needed to restart the Mac and then it no longer boots. When booting in verbose safe mode it hangs as well at 0% boot progress (same as in standart boot).

I tried the below steps and none of them works. Any Ideas?

  • Hardware Test (Both the short one and the extended one)
  • Disk Check
  • NPVRAM reset
  • SMC Reset
  • Safe Mode (Won't start)
  • I tried to recovered the Mac using the recovery boot and chose Install New OSX, but installer also hangs at "downloading" stage, saing it's 22-25-35 minutes left (I was waiting 3 times for a few hours - number didn't changed).

The Mac was working fine before the upgrade.

The model is Macbook Pro Retina 13".

Thanks for any help.

Did you try booting into Recovery Mode?

Command - R

Yes, I've mentioned info about reinstalling from CMD + R. It stucks.

Dear Max,

I got what you wanted from me and just deleted all rubish from System/Library/Extensions/ and system booted perfectly!

I defenatly have to make a clean install after El Capitan release ) Was transferring my data from 10.4 til 11.11 )) Without clean installs )

That's great! ✅

And yes, a clean install every couple of years is a good practice where possible 🙂

Apple should include some script to move that kind of drivers to an *Unsupported* folder. Don't now why they didn't include it in GM RC version! ((

Yes, I can imagine how something like that could be implemented pre-kextload on the next boot after a kernel panic logs associated 3rd party kexts. You can request the feature with http://bugreport.apple.com if you like...

Apple should definitely hire you!!! 😝

Max,

I am having the same type of issue as of 5 minutes ago on my Macbook Pro Retina. Was working fine for about a week when I got GM installed and now this afternoon was searching on the web, froze and I hard reset and then after my password screen comes up and I enter my password the progress par sits idle at no progrss and I cannot get into my computer outside of the Diagnostics mode. Help please!!!!!! Dead in the water since Apple says its still beta and they don't have any way to troubleshoot until release.

Tried lot of things including reading kexts etc, but was not getting any resolution to the issue. Finally decided to do a clean install of the OS over the air, then used migrate option to move the back up in place. This solved the issue finally.

So best solution is to do a time machine back up and do a clean install.

Only message i got while restoring from back up was the El Capitan installer some files were not moved.

hi bloom, my mac pro reena display stopped installation half way and asked me to restart. on doing so it's not booting. plz help
