Tap to click many times not working in Monterey...

Since I upgraded my MBP 2020 M1 to Monterey, the 'Tap to click' is almost unusable. This issue is still not resolved in the 12.1 beta 3.

Its almost impossible to do my work on my MBP... Please revert any Trackpad changes ! The very good 'Tap to click' was one of the reasons to buy a MBP.

  • I have the same problem. I just returned my brand new MacbookPro today.

I am worried that as of 2022/04/17, seventeen hundred people are experiencing the same issue and there is no official reply from Apple. In one of the posts from other people, one customer went to the Apple Store and was able to reproduce the issue in every laptop. In another post, a customer ordered a replacement unit and the new laptop had the same defect. This is a YouTube video that demonstrates the problem: https://youtu.be/l4daQQeuzNw

To me, it feels unfair to pay for a laptop where the Track-Pad is not working as intended.

There are similar reports dating back to 2020, and there is still no answer from Apple:

I wonder whether Apple is able to fix the problem.

I am facing the same issue on my 14" M1 Max MBP, bought in November 2021.

CMD + immedaitly tapping to click requires 3 taps for it to register.

I have also found that clicking the CMD key then waiting a few seconds before tapping the trackpad registers the tap to click.

Has anyone updated to 12.4? if yes, does the issue still exist?

I did update to 12.4. But the problem still remains. I was wondering whether it's a software problem or a hardware failure? But after I googled my problem, it seems more likely a macOS Monterey bug(A dude got his 3rd replacement with a MBP 14" and the problem is still there)?

Just got my 14" base model MBP for 2 days.

It's pretty annoying when you cannot CMD + tapping to click to open a new tab in web browser.

And it seems like a common issue.

APPLE please FIX it ASAP!

Workaround by kevinios:

It looks like it's actually the time between pressing down CMD and tapping that makes the trick work. Try again but don't move the cursor, simply wait 0.5 seconds or so before you tap. For me, the tap is then always registered. If I hold CMD and tap too quickly, the tap is ignored.

same problem,MacBook pro 14, m1 pro, MacOS Monterey

Ok so I haven't found a solution to make this problem go away, but I think I can explain the issue a little bit more on why it's taking some of you 3 taps or a "random" number of taps for the CMD + tap to work. Try holding down CMD/Shift, move your curser, then tap. It will select on the first tap this way.

I have no idea why this is the case, why the curser needs move just a slight amount after holding down CMD or Shift for tap to register, but it does explain why it will take 3+ taps for some of you, because your curser will inadvertently move slightly on one of those taps, causing the next tap to register.

I feel this will be some intentional "fix" for accidental inputs, just like that craptastic fix that was added to the caps lock where you have to press it just a tad longer for it to register that you pressed it. These aren't fixes apple, they're bugs. Not sure why they're messing about with their keyboard and trackpad setups when they already had the best setups on the market (IMHO).

same problem macbook pro 14", have had the problem since original purchase and still exists on 12.4

i have no issue on my macbook air m1 2020.

same problem on my macbook pro 14" m1pro

and there's a delay after moving pointer. I use three finger drag, and after I drag a rectangle and directly move to another location after releasing three finger drag, the rectangle got moved too.....

Same here!

I have no issue with my Macbook Air M1 2020 and Mac Mini M1 2020.

I just discovered the issue on my brand new MacBook Pro 14 M1 Pro.

It doesn't seem to be "number of clicks" nor "moving pointer" related.

It's more like a time delay after pressing CMD or SHIFT.

When pressing CMD or SHIFT, I have to wait about 2 seconds to have my tap to click working.

But it's working instantly with a real click.

Come on Apple, please fix it!

  • The issue seems to be solved with Monterey 12.5, thanks!

M1 macbook pro 2021 14, Monterey 12.4 I'm super annoying from I should always tap tap tap 3 times for shift tap !!!

When are you going to fix this!! we are suffering!!

Updated to Monterey 12.5. And so far the "3 times" click bug is not happening... Relieved Finally !!

Give it a try.. hopefully it solves for everyone.

Meh, updated to Monterey 12.5 and the bug still there.

Yeah, on 12.5.1 and the bug is still there. If this is some kind of 'fix', why don't they give us the possibility to adjust this behaviour in system preferences ?

It looks like finally fixed on 12.6. I was still suffering the issue on 12.5.3 but seems to be ok now

It wasn't fixed for me on 12.6. Still experiencing this on a new 14" M1 Pro.

Still experiencing this problem on macOS 12.6.

Yup still broken in 12.6. Kinda important bug. Wish Apple would fix it – but I know they're "too big to care."
