CarPlay on iOS 11 Unusable?

So for the first time today I used iOS11 in my car for CarPlay and WOW!! It is a mess....what I think I figured out is that maps for navigation causes it cause when I stopped using that it got better...not great but better. Maps for CarPlay is a disaster...I know they are working to improve it but it doesn’t even give directions on the CarPlay screen And the directions tha show on the phone do not update as you reach that point. 3rd party media apps (Spotify in my case) are also extremely unstable. I know it is a beta so I hope this is an area of focus for them!

Only for give an idea what model, year and brand is your car. I don't have issues with my Honda Accord 2016.

Working ok on my BMW125i 2017 model. Does not show lanes and next turn though.

I have a 2016 Honda Civic EX-T

You are not alone. The next turn information doesn't show for me either and Maps crashes constantly. This happens in a 2017 Honda Pilot and in my other vehicle which has an Alpine ILX-007 aftermarket stereo. I also have issues with messages as the icon shows I have a new message but when I try to listen to it I am told I have no new messages. 😁

Hopefully they release a new version soon with a bug fix.

So far got the following issues:

- " I also have issues with messages as the icon shows I have a new message but when I try to listen to it I am told I have no new messages." (same as Jervis961)

- Music progress doesn't update when screen is off (music or podcasts)

- Constantly getting the device freezing momentarily (memory leak?), which causes the music to stop on the car (or better, to play split second repeating noise), which is then solved by unplugging and replugging the cable.

- No idea about Apple Maps… don't use it.

All the same issues. Constantly being disconnected from pairing to my iPhone and then it looks like it is connecting to the phone as a audio player (different than the iPhone connection). Very frustrating I thought it might have to do with me trying out the do not disturb while driving (new) feature but not sure if it’s got anything to do with it now. Beta 2 seems REAL buggy so I hope the next update happens quickly! AppleCeeds

BTW: 2017 Toyota Avalon (love it!) with all the goodies!

Update beta2:

- Music progress is solved

- music freezes happens less often. Now when they happen, I can clearly see that the device is awfully slow and hot because the user interface moves very slow. Before there were cases where the sound would be broken, but the device still loooked to be usable.

Agreed, Music is much better in beta 2. The UI updates properly, the audio plays without glitching, and it doesn't stop playing altogether as often. (But sometimes it does still sometimes stop playing any audio.)

But wow, Maps is unstable. Even when it is working, it is jittery and often the location starts lagging a few blocks from where I actually am. If I try to use Maps and Music at the same time, Maps is pretty much guaranteed to hang or crash after a few minutes. (As opposed to beta 1, where Maps would keep going but Music would stutter and die.)

Siri is unusable in CarPlay. It's laggy, it crashes a lot, and makes the problems with Maps even worse. (Likely a memory issue.)

I'm going on a long road trip next week. I'm downgrading to 10.3.3 just so I can use CarPlay while on vacation. (I'll keep iOS 11 on my iPad, though, where it's a huge advance over iOS 10.) When I get home I'll give iOS 11 another try on my iPhone, as aside from CarPlay it's pretty nice. (And hopefully the next beta fixes CarPlay.)

My issues with CarPlay in my 2015 Sonata Sport since installing iOS 11 on my iPhone 6s/128: - phone does not connect to the audio system, though all other phone functions seem to be okay. In other words, if I pick up the call, the sound is coming out of the earphone of the iPhone. Physically picking up the phone and setting it to the car doesn't work. And physically doing so is causing a major road hazard that will ultimately cause a civil suit against apple if they do not fix it immediately. The phone disconnects at random, specifically when using Spotify, or it simply disconnects. It isn't the cable, as I notice it still is charging.

Additionally, I have had no issues at all with CarPlay prior to iOS 11. Only exception, is upon first establishing a connection, I would typically have to close Spotify and re-open it to get it to work.

CarPlay seems to be slowly getting better. In beta 7 it usually mostly works on my iPhone 6 (especially if I don't use Siri) but the audio still sometimes breaks up and once Maps got laggy. (Both problems were pretty much constant around beta 2, but these days only occasionally occur.)

Siri still causes a lot of problems, though. Sometimes it works fine, but often it takes 20 seconds after pressing the button before it starts listening for speech. And then it may hang, exit immediately, or give errors rather than actually working. Sometimes when Siri doesn't work it makes the whole CarPlay experience unstable… apps such as Maps or Music may crash (or start stuttering) and the entire CarPlay interface may disappeara and restart. (Sometimes automatically, sometimes only after disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable.)

CarPlay also seems to be a lot more sensitive to network interruptions than it was in iOS 10. If my LTE connection disappears, it can get ugly.

CarPlay on 10.3.3 was buttery smooth on my iPhone 6. CarPlay on 11.0b7 is sometimes solid, often quirky, and all-too-often crashes completely. But at least now it works reliably about 90% of the time as long as I don't invoke Siri. And some days Siri works fine, at least a few times. Using Siri more than a few times in the some drive almost always causes problems eventually. Feels like there's some big memory leak or other resource allocation problem.

My biggest issue so far is the fact that my 7Plus no longer charges! Never a problem until 11 and hasn’t stopped being a problem since. The charging icon shows up and I’m using a genuine Apple cable in my ‘17 Maxima. Just doesn’t charge. The battery dies pretty fast.

I use my iPhone 6s on CarPlay with my 2017 Malibu and since downloading iOS 11 beta, the map does not show the detailed view of your navigation with the drive direction facing up(like normal). It does show the turn directions on the top left, but it is very buggy- often times those instructions come too late to make the turn, especially given you aren’t seeing the path of where to turn on the larger portion of the screen. Interesting that if you were to just be driving and have the phone sitting in a dock or bracket without being connected to CarPlay, I think the maps on the phone operates normally, it is when you connected to CarPlay that what is shown on the screen is not the same as before.

Works great on my 2016 Honda Civic. Couldn't be happier. Must be your car.
