drive genius regularily claims that there's a hardware error with the ssd.

Same thing for me. After upgrading from 10.13.3 beta (17D25b) to beta 3, 4, 5, AND the 10.13.3 supplemental update my iMac 18,3 is unable to boot. I get the "prohibitory symbol" (circle with a line throught it) indicating that it can't find the system drive. when attempting to boot into verbose mode I saw "AppleNVMeAssert failed ..." before the boot up stalled out.

Booting to recovery wouldn't work, AHT found no issues. I booted to a USB flash drive with High Sierra Installer in it and ran Disk Utility and found 50 of those warning: xattr_val: object (oid 0x196[***]): invalid flags (0x11) messages but no fix.

I ended up rolling back to the last snapshot from my system drive. After that and reboot Disk Utility finds nothing wrong with my system drive.

I'm about to try 10.13.4 beta 1 but I'm a bit gun shy now.

if the 'install failed' page comes up, open disk utility and first aid both Mac HD(or whatever you call it) then it's container (make sure you are 'viewing all devices. Rebbot and rundisk utility from login again on both - it may not get rid of the "warning: apfs_....." but at least it's booting
