Finder in Big Sur

I have my finder open and maximized. Every single time that I'm clicking on it, a new tab opens. How can I prevent this from happening?

Os: Big Sur 11.0.1
Let me explain it a bit further by giving an example.

Right now, I'm writing this in safari (maximized on my 2nd screen). On my first screen, I have Finder open and maximized. On my first screen in desktop 1, I have my Spotify open but, of course, not maximized (note the name desktop 1; otherwise, it would have changed to Spotify). Therefore at the moment, I do not see the finder window at all. Now I'm hovering my mouse down, so the dock shows up, so I can click on Finder. This means that after clicking, the Spotify on Desktop 1 should switch to the finder window since I clicked on it.

The issue is after I click on Finder, instead of only showing me the Finder, another new folder is opened in a new tab (or new window depends on your setting).

This seems like a BUG to me. I don't want to open a new folder in a new tab/window EVERY SINGLE TIME I click on the Finder.
Same issue here.

Klicking the Finder icon on a second desktop switches the desktop to finder and opens a new tab every time.
That's a bug!
I'm having the same issue. I always have two finder windows open on Desktop 1. When clicking the Finder icon in the menu, I expect to switch to Desktop 1 where Finder is already open.

Now, in Big Sur, every time I click the Finder icon I switch to Desktop 1 AND an additional Finder window is opened on the Desktop where I was working. I end up with extra finder windows in every Desktop.

This is very annoying.
Just chiming in to say I'm having the same problem using multiple desktops. Hopefully this gets fixed soon!
I'm having the exact same problem. This is becoming a productivity issue for me as I use multiple desktops every day. I've tested it with my other applications and thus far have only found that the problem is with finder.

Hope apple resolves this or adds a setting to turn the function on/off.
As an interim solution I have configured finder to open a new tab instead of a new window.

Settings > General > Prefer tabs > Always

This is a little less annoying.

Hope this helps.
Same! Very annoying.
It is really annoying for me also, please Appe, release a fix soon!
Can this be fixed please. It is super annoying.
DEVS, FIX THIS!!! It's frustrating!!!

And why can't I quit Finder? After you made me open all these windows I can only hide them or close one by one!
Are you kidding me???

Having this problem too. So, so frustrating.
Yes happens to me on my MacBook Air since I installed the latest update. Never used to do this. Think it’s a bug. Hope they release a fix soon!!
I have the same problem, which started with the Big Sur upgrade.
Except it was a backward step.

This is a really annoying bug. Everytime I wish to go to Finder it opens a new window. What I want is what the MacOS used to do, which is to take me back the Finder tab I had previously been using. I may swtch back to Finder many time each minute to check or open a file. Instead of beeing able to get on with my work I am wasting time closing Finder windows. Deeply distracting!

There is no clues any where on the mac help or online as to how to change this setting. I've spent ages looking at the settings and trying different options. None set this feature back to how it should work.

Come on Apple - fix this asap.
exact same problem. How could Apple release a major OS upgrade with such obvious annoyance...
I have the exact same issue. This is really annoying and impacting my productivity. Please fix it or at least add a setting to turn it on/off.
Hi,

Not only it's annoying but an "expected behaviour" in words of an apple support girl I talked to this morning. I can't see the point in having infinite finder tabs or windows when your workflow depends on clicking the finder's dock icon.

Not so well done, Apple.
