I have my finder open and maximized. Every single time that I'm clicking on it, a new tab opens. How can I prevent this from happening?

Here's how I solved this problem for myself. I was opening folders in Finder and discovered that each folder was opening in a new tab. Very annoying!
Settings > General > Prefer tabs > in full screen [when opening documents]
I do not keep my Finder window maximized, so this eliminated a new tab opening every time I opened a new folder.
If I maximize my Finder window, then I have the original problem. Hopefully this helps someone like myself!

This is such a big problem for me that its made me want to sign up to this forum so that I can talk about this.
This is costing me a lot of wasted time and has really hindered my work flow.

Apple, please prioritize this issue. I am guessing most users - like me - use Finder throughout the day. This problem is a frustrating distraction from productivity.
Same here, switching spaces to the finder opens a new tab or window depending on settings.

Same problem. Apple needs to fix it ASAP. A lot of my time is being wasted closing the huge number of Finder tabs.
I have the same issue. This isn't very pleasant, and hopefully, Apple will get this fixed as soon as possible.
Add me to the growing list of Big Sur users for whom the new tab automatically opening in Finder every time you click on Finder is extremely annoying and a waste of time. Please remove this in the next update or at the least allow an opt-out. Thanks!
'JWCTurner' - This fix didn't work for me unfortunately. So as ever, every time I click on the Dock finder icon, rather than moving to an already open finder window, a new window always opens.

How could Apple Developers be this stupid!?! OMG!!! This is so annoying. it is the worst. Love Big Sur 11.1, but I hate the way Finder moves around all over the place. There's no way to turn it off.
