Did you purge all caches, notably in Safari ?

Get details here on how to do:

Same problem.

Got my iphone 14 pro max yesterday.

  1. Went through setup process, including update of iOS to 16.0.2
  2. transfered my iphone 12 pro max to my new 14 pro max via iCloud restore
  3. Logged in all the apps
  4. Went to sleep with “79 GB of 256 GB Used”

Woke up this morning:

  1. System data ballooned over night to “195 GB of 256 Used”

The same issue has happened to my wife one year ago when she bought a new iphone 13 pro max. System data grew massively during that first night after the transfer from the older iphone. Massive surprise for her in the morning. Now the same thing has happened to me. #storageanxiety

I read in the last edition of my computer magazine this tipp:

Goto Settings, than „Siri and Search“ In the setting of every app turn off „Show content in search“ (maybe it’s called something different, because having a German phone here „Inhalt in Suche anzeigen“) Than restart phone

The culprit was Teams app for me. I went into the app’s settings and toggled the “clear app data” switch to on. Then I opened and closed the Teams app and my system data reduced by 135GB

When I delete video files like .mp4 or .mkv from my iPad, instead of the space being immediately released, it is being added to System Data with no change in the remaining free space. This issue has been present from when I installed iPadOS 16 beta.

I had this issue after updating the OS. In the course of backing things up to prepare for a wipe & restore, I logged on to iCloud.com with my phone connected via USB cable. As soon as I did, my phone popped up a notice that there were new terms of service for iCloud. After accepting them 30 GB of storage immediately cleared up.

Hi there,

You might have better luck asking this question over in Apple Support Communities run by Apple Support.

Mine is taking up 120 gigs. What do I do?

The app usage data presented in Settings--> General --> iPhone Storage --> {app name} does not include usage data from log files, cache and other system data that is written to disk. For example: an app showing a total of 1.5GB consumption between "App Size" + "Documents and Data" may actually be consuming much more in the "System Data" bucket.

Solution: To clear the applications writing data (logs, cache, etc) to "System Data", you will need to remove the app completely by Remove App --> Delete App & Contents --> then reinstall the application from the App Store. I was able to reclaim ~15GB of System Data by deleting Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Then reinstalling those apps.

I fixed mine by deleteing all the video streaming apps, YouTube, Netflix etc and all their data. Then reinstalling them.

Hello all, I also have the same issue but it is coming from icloud. I un-synched iCloud and the files on my ipad did not disappears but became System Data.

Very annoying. I am resetting my ipad twice a week lately.

My fix was to delete Apple podcast and reinstall it. That freed 130GB of the memory.

Anyone found a fix? I can't believe this has been reported, and still a fix hasn't been found.... let's you know where the priorities are...

[Trick that actually works] If you have an iPhone capable of shooting ProRes video, go into your camera, go into video mode, and enable ProRes. You’ll notice a ticker at the top that tells you the maximum amount of time you can shoot in this mode. It will more than likely be 0 minutes, but you will see right below that a spinning ticker saying “optimizing resources.” This is getting rid of that system data that’s unneeded. I just left my phone in this mode for a few minutes and it freed up five minutes worth of video, but then gave me the option to continue free resources. It essentially got rid of the rest of the system data that wasn’t needed and left me with the free space above!

Can you check this resource following the steps from there I reduced 30gb system storage: [https://pcglance.com/system-data-taking-all-my-iphone-storage/)

I have the same problem, but with more than 123GB. Is there an official fix? How can I get an official response from Apple? This thread is almost three years old.

The tip of @jeffckchow works like a charm! THANK YOU!! Finally I can backup my Whatsapp messages again.

I had almost 330GB in cache:

And now back to 13GB!

71.69Gb...that's nothing I'm at 192Gb of system data.

AFAIK there is no solution other than wiping the phone, apps and everything. i spoke with Apple today, they know about the issue in general but have no idea what is causing it...nor what has caused it for the last several years...#CompleteJoke

tl;dr - you might want to check for offloaded apps. Those might count towards a high System Data usage as well.

Just adding to the discussion since I recently discovered that offloaded app storage counts towards the System Data usage. It might have been mentioned here, but I just skimmed throught the responses...

In my case I had ~65Gb System Data usage, but when re-downloading one specific video app it became evident that 50Gb of those were from that app. So after re-downloading, System Data usage was reduced by 50Gb - but of course that was just moved to "Applications". But now it's at least evident what app is using those 50Gb:s, giving me a fair chance to clean it up.

My system Data takes 71Gb
