Incorrect menu consistency warnings logged in Tahoe for NSStatusItem, performance issues related?
Is anyone else getting new warning about menu items with submenus when running on Tahoe? I'm getting big performance problems using my menu as well as seeing these messages and I'm wondering if there's a connection. My app is faceless with a NSStatusItem with an NSMenu. Specifically it's my own subclass of NSMenu where I have a lot of code to manage the menu's dynamic behavior. This code is directly in the menu subclass instead of in a controller because the app I forked had it this way, a little wacky but I don't see it being a problem. A nib defines the contents of the menu, and it's instantiated manually with code like: var nibObjects: NSArray? = [] guard let nib = NSNib(nibNamed: "AppMenu", bundle: nil) else { ... } guard nib.instantiate(withOwner: owner, topLevelObjects: &nibObjects) else { ... } guard let menu = nibObjects?.compactMap({ $0 as? Self }).first else { ... } Within that nib.instantiate call I see a warning logged that seems new to Tahoe, before the menu's awakeFromNib is called, that says (edited): Internal inconsistency in menus - menu <NSMenu: 0x6000034e5340> believes it has <My_StatusItem_App.AppMenu: 0x7f9570c1a440> as a supermenu, but the supermenu does not seem to have any item with that submenu My_StatusItem_App.AppMenu: 0x7f9570c1a440 is my menu belonging to the NSStatusItem, NSMenu: 0x6000034e5340 is the submenu of one of its menu items. At a breakpoint in the NSMenu subclass's awakeFromNib I print self and see clear evidence of the warning's incorrectness. Below is a snippet of the console including the full warning, only edited for clarity and brevity. It shows on line 32 menu item with placeholder title "prototype batch item" that indeed has that submenu. Custom NSWindow styleMask behavior changed/broken resulting in unresizable or non-responsive windows in macOS Tahoe 26.3 RC
NSWindow objects with custom styleMask configurations seem to behave erratically in macOS Tahoe 26.3 RC. For example an NSWindow is not resizable after issuing .styleMask.remove(.titled) or some NSWindow-s become totally unresponsive (the NSWindow becomes transparent to mouse events) with custom styleMask-s. This is a radical change compared to how all previous macOS versions or the 26.3 beta3 worked and seriously affects apps that might use custom NSWindows - this includes some system utilities, OSD/HUD apps etc, actually breaking some apps. Such fundamental compatibility altering changes should not be introduced in an RC stage (if this is intentional and not a bug) imho.

[macOS Sequoia] Using RegisterEventHotkey with option and shift modifiers doesn't working anymore
Hello. In my app, I use RegisterEventHotkey to implement global keyboard shortcuts to trigger actions. Up until macOS Sequoia, I was able to use a keyboard shortcut with option and shift as the modifiers, like option shift 2 (⌥ ⇧ 2). Now, on macOS Sequoia, using RegisterEventHotkey to register a hotkey with those exact modifiers (option and shift), regardless of the key, fails with the error -9868 (eventInternalErr). Is this a documented and wanted change, or is this a bug? Other modifier keys (just command, command option, command shift, command control, control shift, etc), all work. Small Size Icons and NSToolbar on MacOS 12.0 Monterey -- can it work?
I noticing that Monterey defaults to the NSWindowToolbarStyleAutomatic / NSWindowToolbarStyleUnified toolbar style, which suppresses the "use Small Size" menu item and customization checkbox. So I've set the window to use NSWindowToolbarStyleExpanded. However, the toolbar will no longer change to a smaller icon size, as it did in MacOS 10.14, 10.15, and 11.0. I've tried to set the toolbar item sizing to "Automatic" for all of our toolbar icons, but that results in bad positioning in both Regular and Small Size mode -- the height is way too big. The native size of the icon .png files are 128 x 128. What's odd is that if I resize the window with the toolbar to be wider, the NSToolbarItems in the overflow area will be displayed in the toolbar are 128 x 128, where the rest of the toolbar icons get displayed as a 32 x 32 icon. The only way to get it to layout remotely correct is to make the NSToolbarItem to have an explicit minimum size of 24 x 24 and maximum size of 32 x 32. And that USED to allow "small size", but on Monterey, it no longer does. Anyone had any success with small size icons on Monterey?

NSScrollView scrolling hitch
When scrolling a basic NSScrollView there seems to be a sudden jump after each flick. Scrolling does not appear smooth and is disorientating. A scroll jump seems to happen directly after letting go of a scroll flick using a trackpad/mouse. Right at that moment the scroll turns into a momentum scroll, slowly decreasing the speed. But the first frame after the gesture the content jumps forward, more than what is expected. Observations: Counterintuitively, scrolling appears to be smoother when disabling NSScrollView.isCompatibleWithResponsiveScrolling. If disabled using a custom NSScrollView subclass there is no large jump anymore. Scrolling also appears to be smoother using a SwiftUI ScrollView. I assume that has the same behaviour as a disabled isCompatibleWithResponsiveScrolling Ironically a WKWebView scrolls much smoother. No sudden jump is observable. It also seems to scroll with faster acceleration, but the individual frames do appear smoother. Why is this better than a native NSScrollView? Elastic scrolling at the bounds of the scroll view also appears much smoother for WKWebViews. When pulling to refresh there is a jump for NSScrollView/SwiftUI, but not for WKWebView. When using an NSScrollView with isCompatibleWithResponsiveScrolling disabled, scrolling appears just as smooth as WKWebView on macOS 13 Ventura and below. On macOS 14 Sonoma scrolling behaviour is suddenly different. Tested on Intel & Arm Macs, macOS 11 Big Sur through 15 Sequoia, built with Xcode 16. Should isCompatibleWithResponsiveScrolling be disabled on Sonoma+? Are there any drawbacks? There is also no overdraw anymore since Monterey, as described in https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/releasenotes/AppKit/RN-AppKitOlderNotes/#10_9Scrolling Even with responsive scrolling disabled, why is WKWebView scrolling much smoother than NSScrollView?

NSScrollPocket overlay appearing on scroll views in NSSplitViewController on macOS Tahoe
I have an NSSplitViewController with three columns: sidebar full-height content view with NSScrollView/NSTableView detail view. There's no (visible) titlebar and no toolbar. This layout has worked fine for years, but in Tahoe an unwanted overlay (~30-50px high) appears at the top of any column containing a scroll view with table content. Xcode suggests it's an NSScrollPocket. My research suggests it... Only affects columns with NSScrollView Plain NSView columns are unaffected Overlay height varies (~50px or ~30px depending on how I mess with title / toolbar settings) Disabling titlebar/toolbar settings reduces but doesn't eliminate the overlay The overlay obscures content and there doesn't appear to be any API to control its visibility. Is this intended behavior, and if so, is there a way to disable it for applications that don't need this UI element? "NSColorPanel.shared.showsAlpha = false" is causing not satisfiable layout constraints (macOS 26)
When disabling the opacity slider of color panels, my app crashes with unsatisfiable layout constraints. Feel free reproduce with a minimal test project: A macOS app based on the Xcode 26.0 template with only one line added to the ViewController's viewDidLoad() function: NSColorPanel.shared.showsAlpha = false The issue doesn't occur if this property is set to "true" or not set at all. I just filed a corresponding bug report (FB20269686), although I don't expect any feedback from Apple ... as numerous issues I reported were never updated or commented at all (after migrating from RADARs).

CMD+V is not working on Tahoe OS with runForModalWindow screen
After upgrading my OS to Tahoe OS , in my application observed that Cmd+V is not working only on runForModalWindow. But menu Edit->Paste and Right click Paste is working on the same screen. Other screens in the application have no issues with Cmd+V. Could you please help with this issue why Cmd+V is not working only in this screen. Thanks, Sowmya

How to check if a sandboxed app already has the access permission to a URL
I want to check whether a sandboxed application already has access permission to a specific URL. Based on my investigation, the following FileManager method seems to be able to determine it: FileManager.default.isReadableFile(atPath: fileURL.path) However, the method name and description don't explicitly mention this use case, so I'm not confident there aren't any oversights. Also, since this method takes a String path rather than a URL, I'd like to know if there's a more modern API available. I want to use this information to decide whether to prompt the user about the Sandbox restriction in my AppKit-based app.

CGContextDrawShading broken on MacOS Tahoe for apps built with MacOS SDK older than 14.5
On MacOS Tahoe (26.0 26.1 or 26.2), when loading an application that was built with an SDK older than version SDK 14.5, all CGContextDrawShading calls to draw onto the screen (inside of NSView drawRect:) fail silently, filling the path with a single color instead of a gradient. If rendering into a local CGBitmapContext instead of the NSView context on Tahoe, CGShading works as expected. On MacOS 15 and earlier, CGShading works as expected too. If the app is built with SDK version 14.5 or newer, CGShading works normally on MacOS Tahoe. For recent applications, they can of course be rebuilt with a more recent version of the SDK, which fixes the problem. However for Audio Units or any other type of plug-in, even if they are built with the "appropriate" SDK, if they are loaded inside of a legacy application that was built with an older SDK, the problem arises, which customers complain about and do not understand. I have noticed that there had been a few changes in MacOS Tahoe regarding the CGShading APIs, could this problem be related? If this issue cannot be fixed in an upcoming MacOS update, is there maybe a "defaults" value that can be changed? (since this behaviour is specific to a sdk version, I guess that it is triggered by a version check in the Frameworks and that there is a "defaults" value that can be changed to avoid this specific behaviour, as it is usually the case via a DefaultValueFunction)? I have already opened a feedback regarding this issue, but maybe someone already has a solution for this problem?

NSTextAttachment.character symbol suddenly not available anymore resulting in compiler error
I published the latest update of my AppKit app in September with macOS 26.0. I just wanted to create a new update, but compiling on macOS 26.4 now fails because of the symbol NSTextAttachment.character which is referenced in my code. The error is Type 'NSTextAttachment' has no member 'character' I've never experienced before that a symbol suddenly is not available anymore without even a deprecation notice from one OS release to the next, let alone a minor release. Is this a bug in macOS or Xcode, or should I start worrying about symbols becoming unavailable anytime?

NSScrollView two finger drag being interrupted
I have a fairly robust MacOS application that has an NSScrollView that contains a canvas with various subviews (including web views and text views that contain scroll views), and a couple of peer views that track items in the scroll view (eg: screen space controls). Some of these views interrupt two finger scrolling. Every scroll view, and one of the peer views (essentially a stack view with buttons in it). I have written an additional bare bones application which does roughly the same thing, and my bare bones application works perfectly: Start two-finger dragging, scroll any of these other things under the cursor, I can continue to drag (and start dragging in any of those, and they drag without interfering with the parent scroll view). I have tried everything to recreate the interruption, including drag gestures attached to these various ancillary views, and I cannot figure out why dragging some of these views under the cursor interrupts two finger drag in our application, but not in my testbed. Does anyone have suggestions for how to debug this? I can see that there is a gesture recognizer in the NSScrollView hierarchy, but I don't see it in any of my gesture recognizer handling. I have breakpoints on every variation of hit testing and mouse motion, and none of them are getting hit in unexpected ways. I'm at my wit's end. Thanks.

Force NSDocument save panel to select most specific type in format popup button
My app supports different plain text file formats, including the standard .txt and Markdown. When creating a new document, my app already asks which format it should have, so when saving it, I would expect that the save panel already selects that format in the popup button, but currently it always selects "Plain Text". For example, I would expect for a Markdown document that it selects "Markdown" instead of "Plain Text". Is there a way to force it to select the most specific format matching the document format?

Room Plan Issue (structure.capturedStructure)

Xcode 26, macOS 26, attempting to use alternate dock icons
I have added multiple status icons to my project, in the form of .icon files created with Icon Composer. The main app icon works, but the status icons are not working. I am attempting to load the images from the asset catalog using NSImage imageNamed:, and apply them to the NSApp dockTile using NSGlassEffectContainerView. I don't even know if that attempt is going to work, as I never get past the stage of NSImage loading the icons. Maybe someone on the forums knows what to do there? I'd be willing to use one of my coding support incidents to work through this if necessary, as my two incidents will expire as my subscription rolls over in August anyway. My project lives at https://github.com/losnoco/cog/, and the Tahoe attempt WIP lives in the wip.tahoe branch, with the latest commit as of this post being the attempt to adapt the Dock Icon generation. I'd love to know if I can adapt this easily. I'm also still trying to support existing non-Glass custom .png icons the user can add to their profile folder with buttons in the preferences, as well as supporting legacy status icons on pre-Tahoe installs. I also try to add a progress bar to the dock tile view when the app is processing something at length.

Draw SwiftUI.Form style pop-up button with NSPopUpButton in AppKit
In SwiftUI on macOS, A menu-style Picker is drawn as a pop-up button. It generally looks and behaves the same as an NSPopUpButton in AppKit. SwiftUI introduced iOS-like looking UI for settings in macOS, and consequently, the Picker also has its own style when placed inside a Form. A Form-style Picker displays only up/down chevrons and draws the background only when the mouse hovers over it. It also changes its width dynamically based on the selected item. Form { Picker("Animal:", selection: $selection) { ForEach(["Dog", "Cow"], id: \.self) { Text($0) } .pickerStyle(.menu) } You can find it, for instance, in the Print dialog. My question is: I couldn't find a way to draw an NSPopUpButton in AppKit with this style. Does anyone know how to achieve this in AppKit? Some might say I should just use SwiftUI straightforwardly, but I would like to use it in a print panel accessory that currently still avoids using SwiftUI but its dialog has SwiftUI.Form-looking.

Up until macOS Sequoia, I was able to use a keyboard shortcut with option and shift as the modifiers, like option shift 2 (⌥ ⇧ 2). Now, on macOS Sequoia, using RegisterEventHotkey to register a hotkey with those exact modifiers (option and shift), regardless of the key, fails with the error -9868 (eventInternalErr). Is this a documented and wanted change, or is this a bug? Other modifier keys (just command, command option, command shift, command control, control shift, etc), all work. Small Size Icons and NSToolbar on MacOS 12.0 Monterey -- can it work?
I noticing that Monterey defaults to the NSWindowToolbarStyleAutomatic / NSWindowToolbarStyleUnified toolbar style, which suppresses the "use Small Size" menu item and customization checkbox. So I've set the window to use NSWindowToolbarStyleExpanded. However, the toolbar will no longer change to a smaller icon size, as it did in MacOS 10.14, 10.15, and 11.0. I've tried to set the toolbar item sizing to "Automatic" for all of our toolbar icons, but that results in bad positioning in both Regular and Small Size mode -- the height is way too big. The native size of the icon .png files are 128 x 128. What's odd is that if I resize the window with the toolbar to be wider, the NSToolbarItems in the overflow area will be displayed in the toolbar are 128 x 128, where the rest of the toolbar icons get displayed as a 32 x 32 icon. The only way to get it to layout remotely correct is to make the NSToolbarItem to have an explicit minimum size of 24 x 24 and maximum size of 32 x 32. And that USED to allow "small size", but on Monterey, it no longer does. Anyone had any success with small size icons on Monterey?

NSTrackingEnabledDuringMouseDrag broken in Ventura
In macOS 13.2, the NSTrackingEnabledDuringMouseDrag flag for NSTrackingArea is broken, i.e., mouse-entered and mouse-exited events are not sent during a drag. This problem did not exist in macOS 12. I've filed a bug report, FB11973492, just wondering if anyone knows a workaround.

NSScrollView scrolling hitch
When scrolling a basic NSScrollView there seems to be a sudden jump after each flick. Scrolling does not appear smooth and is disorientating. A scroll jump seems to happen directly after letting go of a scroll flick using a trackpad/mouse. Right at that moment the scroll turns into a momentum scroll, slowly decreasing the speed. But the first frame after the gesture the content jumps forward, more than what is expected. Observations: Counterintuitively, scrolling appears to be smoother when disabling NSScrollView.isCompatibleWithResponsiveScrolling. If disabled using a custom NSScrollView subclass there is no large jump anymore. Scrolling also appears to be smoother using a SwiftUI ScrollView. I assume that has the same behaviour as a disabled isCompatibleWithResponsiveScrolling Ironically a WKWebView scrolls much smoother. No sudden jump is observable. It also seems to scroll with faster acceleration, but the individual frames do appear smoother. Why is this better than a native NSScrollView? Elastic scrolling at the bounds of the scroll view also appears much smoother for WKWebViews. When pulling to refresh there is a jump for NSScrollView/SwiftUI, but not for WKWebView. When using an NSScrollView with isCompatibleWithResponsiveScrolling disabled, scrolling appears just as smooth as WKWebView on macOS 13 Ventura and below. On macOS 14 Sonoma scrolling behaviour is suddenly different. Tested on Intel & Arm Macs, macOS 11 Big Sur through 15 Sequoia, built with Xcode 16. Should isCompatibleWithResponsiveScrolling be disabled on Sonoma+? Are there any drawbacks? There is also no overdraw anymore since Monterey, as described in https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/releasenotes/AppKit/RN-AppKitOlderNotes/#10_9Scrolling Even with responsive scrolling disabled, why is WKWebView scrolling much smoother than NSScrollView?

NSScrollPocket overlay appearing on scroll views in NSSplitViewController on macOS Tahoe
I have an NSSplitViewController with three columns: sidebar full-height content view with NSScrollView/NSTableView detail view. There's no (visible) titlebar and no toolbar. This layout has worked fine for years, but in Tahoe an unwanted overlay (~30-50px high) appears at the top of any column containing a scroll view with table content. Xcode suggests it's an NSScrollPocket. My research suggests it... Only affects columns with NSScrollView Plain NSView columns are unaffected Overlay height varies (~50px or ~30px depending on how I mess with title / toolbar settings) Disabling titlebar/toolbar settings reduces but doesn't eliminate the overlay The overlay obscures content and there doesn't appear to be any API to control its visibility. Is this intended behavior, and if so, is there a way to disable it for applications that don't need this UI element? "NSColorPanel.shared.showsAlpha = false" is causing not satisfiable layout constraints (macOS 26)
When disabling the opacity slider of color panels, my app crashes with unsatisfiable layout constraints. Feel free reproduce with a minimal test project: A macOS app based on the Xcode 26.0 template with only one line added to the ViewController's viewDidLoad() function: NSColorPanel.shared.showsAlpha = false The issue doesn't occur if this property is set to "true" or not set at all. I just filed a corresponding bug report (FB20269686), although I don't expect any feedback from Apple ... as numerous issues I reported were never updated or commented at all (after migrating from RADARs).

CMD+V is not working on Tahoe OS with runForModalWindow screen
After upgrading my OS to Tahoe OS , in my application observed that Cmd+V is not working only on runForModalWindow. But menu Edit->Paste and Right click Paste is working on the same screen. Other screens in the application have no issues with Cmd+V. Could you please help with this issue why Cmd+V is not working only in this screen. Thanks, Sowmya

How to check if a sandboxed app already has the access permission to a URL
I want to check whether a sandboxed application already has access permission to a specific URL. Based on my investigation, the following FileManager method seems to be able to determine it: FileManager.default.isReadableFile(atPath: fileURL.path) However, the method name and description don't explicitly mention this use case, so I'm not confident there aren't any oversights. Also, since this method takes a String path rather than a URL, I'd like to know if there's a more modern API available. I want to use this information to decide whether to prompt the user about the Sandbox restriction in my AppKit-based app.

What format do the app-open-doc functions expect from their "String" parameters?
NSApplicationDelegate.application(_:open:) gets the files it needs to read from the file URLs given. There are similar older functions that use a String to identify the file. What format are those strings expecting? A path name? An URL?

CGContextDrawShading broken on MacOS Tahoe for apps built with MacOS SDK older than 14.5
On MacOS Tahoe (26.0 26.1 or 26.2), when loading an application that was built with an SDK older than version SDK 14.5, all CGContextDrawShading calls to draw onto the screen (inside of NSView drawRect:) fail silently, filling the path with a single color instead of a gradient. If rendering into a local CGBitmapContext instead of the NSView context on Tahoe, CGShading works as expected. On MacOS 15 and earlier, CGShading works as expected too. If the app is built with SDK version 14.5 or newer, CGShading works normally on MacOS Tahoe. For recent applications, they can of course be rebuilt with a more recent version of the SDK, which fixes the problem. However for Audio Units or any other type of plug-in, even if they are built with the "appropriate" SDK, if they are loaded inside of a legacy application that was built with an older SDK, the problem arises, which customers complain about and do not understand. I have noticed that there had been a few changes in MacOS Tahoe regarding the CGShading APIs, could this problem be related? If this issue cannot be fixed in an upcoming MacOS update, is there maybe a "defaults" value that can be changed? (since this behaviour is specific to a sdk version, I guess that it is triggered by a version check in the Frameworks and that there is a "defaults" value that can be changed to avoid this specific behaviour, as it is usually the case via a DefaultValueFunction)? I have already opened a feedback regarding this issue, but maybe someone already has a solution for this problem?

NSTextAttachment.character symbol suddenly not available anymore resulting in compiler error
I published the latest update of my AppKit app in September with macOS 26.0. I just wanted to create a new update, but compiling on macOS 26.4 now fails because of the symbol NSTextAttachment.character which is referenced in my code. The error is Type 'NSTextAttachment' has no member 'character' I've never experienced before that a symbol suddenly is not available anymore without even a deprecation notice from one OS release to the next, let alone a minor release. Is this a bug in macOS or Xcode, or should I start worrying about symbols becoming unavailable anytime?

NSScrollView two finger drag being interrupted
I have a fairly robust MacOS application that has an NSScrollView that contains a canvas with various subviews (including web views and text views that contain scroll views), and a couple of peer views that track items in the scroll view (eg: screen space controls). Some of these views interrupt two finger scrolling. Every scroll view, and one of the peer views (essentially a stack view with buttons in it). I have written an additional bare bones application which does roughly the same thing, and my bare bones application works perfectly: Start two-finger dragging, scroll any of these other things under the cursor, I can continue to drag (and start dragging in any of those, and they drag without interfering with the parent scroll view). I have tried everything to recreate the interruption, including drag gestures attached to these various ancillary views, and I cannot figure out why dragging some of these views under the cursor interrupts two finger drag in our application, but not in my testbed. Does anyone have suggestions for how to debug this? I can see that there is a gesture recognizer in the NSScrollView hierarchy, but I don't see it in any of my gesture recognizer handling. I have breakpoints on every variation of hit testing and mouse motion, and none of them are getting hit in unexpected ways. I'm at my wit's end. Thanks.

Force NSDocument save panel to select most specific type in format popup button
My app supports different plain text file formats, including the standard .txt and Markdown. When creating a new document, my app already asks which format it should have, so when saving it, I would expect that the save panel already selects that format in the popup button, but currently it always selects "Plain Text". For example, I would expect for a Markdown document that it selects "Markdown" instead of "Plain Text". Is there a way to force it to select the most specific format matching the document format?

Xcode 26, macOS 26, attempting to use alternate dock icons
I have added multiple status icons to my project, in the form of .icon files created with Icon Composer. The main app icon works, but the status icons are not working. I am attempting to load the images from the asset catalog using NSImage imageNamed:, and apply them to the NSApp dockTile using NSGlassEffectContainerView. I don't even know if that attempt is going to work, as I never get past the stage of NSImage loading the icons. Maybe someone on the forums knows what to do there? I'd be willing to use one of my coding support incidents to work through this if necessary, as my two incidents will expire as my subscription rolls over in August anyway. My project lives at https://github.com/losnoco/cog/, and the Tahoe attempt WIP lives in the wip.tahoe branch, with the latest commit as of this post being the attempt to adapt the Dock Icon generation. I'd love to know if I can adapt this easily. I'm also still trying to support existing non-Glass custom .png icons the user can add to their profile folder with buttons in the preferences, as well as supporting legacy status icons on pre-Tahoe installs. I also try to add a progress bar to the dock tile view when the app is processing something at length.

Draw SwiftUI.Form style pop-up button with NSPopUpButton in AppKit
In SwiftUI on macOS, A menu-style Picker is drawn as a pop-up button. It generally looks and behaves the same as an NSPopUpButton in AppKit. SwiftUI introduced iOS-like looking UI for settings in macOS, and consequently, the Picker also has its own style when placed inside a Form. A Form-style Picker displays only up/down chevrons and draws the background only when the mouse hovers over it. It also changes its width dynamically based on the selected item. Form { Picker("Animal:", selection: $selection) { ForEach(["Dog", "Cow"], id: \.self) { Text($0) } .pickerStyle(.menu) } You can find it, for instance, in the Print dialog. My question is: I couldn't find a way to draw an NSPopUpButton in AppKit with this style. Does anyone know how to achieve this in AppKit? Some might say I should just use SwiftUI straightforwardly, but I would like to use it in a print panel accessory that currently still avoids using SwiftUI but its dialog has SwiftUI.Form-looking.
