EndPointSecurity system extension crashing due to deadline
Hi , Greetings of the day! I would like to get help to avoid the Endpoint Security System Extension crash due to below reason: Termination Reason: Namespace ENDPOINTSECURITY, Code 2 EndpointSecurity client terminated because it failed to respond to a message before its deadline Couple of events we have subscribed and for AUTH related events we are receiving deadline of 14 seconds in Sonoma and to avoid above issue we have implemented a queue to provide verdict within the deadline to avoid the OS killing of our extension however sometime we observe that we are getting crash with below message: Termination Reason: Namespace ENDPOINTSECURITY, Code 2 EndpointSecurity client terminated because it failed to respond to a message before its deadline **Dispatch Thread Soft Limit Reached: 64** (too many dispatch threads blocked in synchronous operations) There is no GCD API to check whether queue is reached to soft limit so we need help here to know or check whether queue is reached to soft limit 64. if we can check above then we should avoid adding the new tasks in it until its free to accept the tasks. And for NOTIFY_CLOSE, we are getting big value in seconds as deadline however we are adding all the processing of NOTIFY_CLOSE with dispatch_async however still receiving the crash. Here is code for AUTH_OPEN : dispatch_queue_t gNotifyCloseQueue = dispatch_queue_create( "com.example.notify_close_queue", dispatch_queue_attr_make_with_qos_class(DISPATCH_QUEUE_CONCURRENT_WITH_AUTORELEASE_POOL, QOS_CLASS_UTILITY, 0)); dispatch_queue_t gAuthOpenQueue = dispatch_queue_create("com.example.auth_open_queue",dispatch_queue_attr_make_with_qos_class(DISPATCH_QUEUE_CONCURRENT_WITH_AUTORELEASE_POOL,QOS_CLASS_USER_INTERACTIVE, 0)); BOOL AuthOpenEventHandler(es_message_t *pesMsg) { //Some Processing we are doing here like Calculate the deadline in seconds etc. and we are receiving 14 seconds in Sonoma // deadline - 14 seconds if ( deadlineInSeconds < 10 ) { dispatch_time_t triggerTime = dispatch_time(pesMsg->deadline, (int64_t)(-1 * NSEC_PER_SEC)); __block es_message_t *pesTempMsg; pesTempMsg = es_copy_message(pesMsg); dispatch_after(triggerTime, gAuthOpenQueue, ^{ if (pesTempMsg != NULL) { esRespondRes = es_respond_flags_result(pesClt,pesMsg,pesMsg->event.open.fflag,false); if(ES_RESPOND_RESULT_SUCCESS != esRespondRes) { es_free_message(pesTempMsg); return; } if (pesTempMsg != NULL) { es_free_message(pesTempMsg); } } return; }); } // Some Processing we are doing here to provide verdict and we are making sure that within 11 seconds we are setting the verdict // we are setting iRetFlag here based on verdict if (NULL != pesMsg) { esRespondRes = es_respond_flags_result(pesClt,pesMsg,iRetFlag,false); if(ES_RESPOND_RESULT_SUCCESS != esRespondRes) { es_free_message(pesMsg); return FALSE; } } return TRUE; } Here is the code for NOTIFY_CLOSE: BOOL NotifyEventHandler(es_message_t *pesMessage) { if (pesMessage->event_type == ES_EVENT_TYPE_NOTIFY_CLOSE && YES == pesMessage->event.close.modified) { __block es_message_t *pesTempMsg; pesTempMsg = es_copy_message(pesMessage); dispatch_async(gNotifyCloseQueue, ^{ // Performing Some processing on es_message_t if (pesTempMsg != NULL) { es_free_message(pesTempMsg); } }); if (pesMessage != NULL) { es_free_message(pesMessage); } } else { es_free_message(pesMessage); } return TRUE; } It would be helpful if someone help us to identify what could be wrong we are doing in above code and how to address/solve those problems (code snippet would be helpful) to avoid all possible crashes. ... XPC issue with System extension process
I have a project with two processes: a UI app (non root) and a system extension (root). The XPC communication between them is functioning correctly. Now, I want to add another process for a different task. I created a new XPC target (HelperProcess) in Xcode and set up an XPC connection between the UI process and this new HelperProcess, which works fine. However, when I try to establish an XPC connection between the HelperProcess and the system extension, it fails. I used the same steps I did to set up the XPC connection between the HelperProcess and the UI process. Specifically, I am using initWithServiceName: to identify the process for communication, but this approach only fails for the system extension and not for the UI part.

NEMachServiceName failure to access after network extension upgrade
We have a product which uses a Network Extension (a socket filter and a packet content filter). The application contains the network extension, as well as an un-sandboxed LaunchDaemon which connects to the service at the NEMachServiceName. Occasionally, usually after an upgrade where the system extension is swapped for the new version, our un-sandboxed process isn't able to contact the network extension. From the logging, we receive the following XPC error (libxpc.dylib) [com.apple.xpc:connection] [0x7fd6d0307f40] failed to do a bootstrap look-up: xpc_error=[3: No such process] in the unsandboxed process. Eventually, we receive an invalidated callback on the XPC connection with the error Couldn’t communicate with a helper application.. We have confirmed that an appropriate service is running via the launchctl command, and the network extension process appears to have initialised correctly. We don't see any indication of a received connection at the Network Extension process however (probably not surprising given the error). Once a system enters this state, repeated attempts to connect are unsuccessful and continue to produce the same error. We've also confirmed that there are no XPC codec exceptions apparent that might cause the connection to fail. I'm at a bit of a loss to explain why this failure might be occurring, other than a problem in the bootstrap/launchd being able to find the appropriate service. Is there possibly some problem with unsandboxed processes accessing the sandboxed network extension via XPC? They are both provisioned in an app group together. Is there possibly some issue where attempting to connect at a critical point during network extension installation causes it to become inaccessible? We've observed this specifically on macOS 14.5 (23F79), however this is something we've noticed on other versions of macOS and our code. The problem isn't systematic, and systems end up in this state only occasionally. We do seem to find some customers have more instances of this problems than others, but we haven't been successful at teasing out any common thread that might explain why.

sourceAppIdentifier is getting wrong with Sequoia Beta3
HI, I have Mac Sequoia Beta3. I installed Content Filer network extension which is same as https://developer.apple.com/documentation/networkextension/filtering_network_traffic in my machine. When I try to connect a machine through "ssh", NEFilterFlow.description in handleNewFlow(_ flow: NEFilterFlow) is showing "sourceAppIdentifier" (process name) as "Terminal" instead of "ssh". But other Mac OS versions, it is showing as "ssh". Is there any issue with Sequoia Beta3? or Is this expected? Thanks

MDM auto-approve NETransparentProxyManager configuration
Hi Team, We are trying to set MDM with NETransparentProxyManager to auto-approve the proxy, but it did not work. We have tried the below Apple document for NETransparentProxyManager. https://developer.apple.com/documentation/devicemanagement/vpn/transparentproxy. Attached is the config file. ApplicationProxy.VPN.mobileconfg.txt could you please suggest how to configure NETransparentProxyManager via MDM?

[macOS]: DNSServiceQueryRecord is not working as per document
Hi Team, We are using the transparent app proxy in macOS and resolving DNS queries using DNSServiceQueryRecord in the TAP process. According to the documentation, when passing the interfaceIndex as 0, it should be queried on all interfaces, and based on IP rules, it assigns the query to that particular interface. However, when we pass 0, it does not query any of the interfaces. We need to provide the specific interface index.

Apple store connect requests sandbox entitlement for the PCI DriverKit System Extension
Hi, I have a PCI DriverKit System Extension project that our team has tested, and the entitlements are not a problem. Once we decided to place the project to the Apple Store the review team requested to add "App Sandbox" entitlement to the project. Then I added the entitlement manually to the ".entitlements" file ( I couldn't do that using the Xcode add entitlement section because since it is a driverkit project, the "App sandbox" is not visible in the entitlements page ) and re-packaged the project for distribution. Later on, I saw that the entitlement was removed during the packaging process. I also tried to add that using the "build settings" page in Xcode (the signing section ), but I had no luck. I feel like I'm being misled by the review team. Do you know if the "App sandbox" entitlement is applicable to a DriverKit project ?

Request for less restricted code signing capabilities in development and enterprise environments
In enterprise environments it can be tricky to develop innovative applications leveraging the full value of the hardware. The code signing capabilities on iOS are much more restrictive compared to macOS, and has been for years. Is it really too much to ask for more control over the applications we can use in development environments. For bespoke applications being able to have control over hardware is something that has been missing for a long time. The ability to sign with com.apple.security.iokit-user-client-class and com.apple.security.temporary-exception.sbpl in development and enterprise solutions would allow for far greater integration with the devices. What reasons are there to avoid allowing this on iOS when macOS has much less restrictive control, the lack of continuity between the systems does not help the "level playing field".

Efficient raw packet processing on live network traffic
Hi, I'm responsible for extending my company's Firewall application with MacOS support. The easiest and fastest way requires a simple API similar to netmap/nfq in Unix/Linux systems or NDIS/WinDivert in Windows platform where All network traffic passing NIC's or WiFi adapter should beforwarded to our FW application, FW application should process the raw packets with its own connection tracking mechanism, modify them if needed, generate new ones if needed, FW application should inject forwarded or new packets to continue their ways. In other words, the required API should stand between NIC/WiFi driver and networking stack and allow packet manipulation. My questions follow: I can't decide on which method to focus further, throughout three alternatives; kext - It can satisfy the requirements, but deprecated, difficult to progress and have no guarantee to be applicable in future versions of MacOS, am I right ? networkingdriverkit - It can satisfy the requirements, am I right ? networkextension - can it satisfy the requirements? Also there is a serious performance problem as mentioned in https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/757071. Can anyone help me to decide on the most proper method for? Thanks.

WWDC Lab feedback
I am writing to follow up with my lab in WWDC24. I had 1:1 lab with Mr. Kavin, we had good 30 minutes lab and for follow up questions Kavin asked me to post it using feedback. Following is my questin: We have screenshare in our application and trying to use CFMessagePort for passing CVPixelBufferRef from broadcast extension to Applicaiton. Questions: How to copy planes of IOSurface backed CVPixelBufferRef onto another one without using memcpy, is there a zero-copy method? How to get notified when an IOSurface backed CVPixelBufferRef data get changed by another process. How to send an IOSurface backed CVPixelBufferRef from Broadcast Extension to application. How to pass unowned IOSurfaceRef from the Broadcast Extension to appliction.

Uninstalling System Extensions with SIP enabled
Our companies security policies require that SIP be enabled all the time which makes it difficult to develop my System Extension since I need to uninstall anytime I need to test any changes to a newly compiled extension. Is there anyway to uninstall the extension with SIP enabled? I already have developer mode on. Is there anything in XCode that can do this? Thx

Hardened Runtime relaxation entitlements disallowed on System Extensions
I was developing an electron based app, and I want to embed a system extension in it, everything works fine with SIP disabled. But for normal cases, I found out: Notarization require hardened runtime enabled. The container is an electron based app, which has JIT related feature, so it requires hardened runtime relaxation entitlements (some exception) But System extension disallow these entitlements, this error message is captured from the log system: Hardened Runtime relaxation entitlements disallowed on System Extensions So does this mean we can't embed a system extension in an Electron-based app?

macOS15 enable system extensions failed
We have developed a system extension based on the Endpoint Security framework, but after upgrading to macOS 15 beta, the system extension fails to enable in Login Items & Extensions. The specific prompt is shown in the image , and the system log indicates an XPC connection failure. When we use the command to check the extension status, it is [activated waiting for user]. We have tried some other products that use system extensions, and they are also unable to load the system extension.

What is timeout period in message filter extension's network query
In the documentation of deferQueryRequestToNetwork method which is used to do a network request on message filter extension. There is no mention of timeout period applied to network requests. https://developer.apple.com/documentation/sms_and_call_reporting/ilmessagefilterextensioncontext/2880240-deferqueryrequesttonetwork So my question is what is the timeout period of the deferQueryRequestToNetwork method? And is there a changelog that this timeout has changed at some point during iOS update?

sysext crashed while sending lots of log to host app
hi all. I subscribe the notify write event, every time I recieve a notify write event message i will send log data and reply block(didn't do nothing) with async method to host app(Objc XPC API).host app will reply immediately once it recieves data. after a while my sysext crashed, then I checked system log find the log below. launchd: exited with exit reason (namespace: 30 code: 0xc40000000004aaaa) - (unknown reason) is it because of exceeding the maximum limit of xpc's block queue length, or too many memory allocation, or... by the way, host app didn't crash. how this happened exactly? how could i solve it?

Prevent authorisation prompt during deactivationRequest
By calling the deactivationRequest from the main app bundle, we see Privacy & Security prompts for TouchID to deactivate the System Extension. We want to know if there's way to avoid that prompt. And also need know why the prompt pops up to deactivate our own app's System Extension component. We even tried to call the deactivate request from Daemon which contain the root access. We still see the prompt. https://developer.apple.com/documentation/systemextensions/ossystemextensionrequest/deactivationrequest(forextensionwithidentifier:queue:)

Jumbo packet are not accepted by utun interface

macOS15 enable system extensions failed
