Add IAP later to an otherwise free app

Hey there,

We're going to develop a little app for a customer, which should be free from the beginning. If the idea works the app should receive IAP options later in the process just to cover the costs of the app.

  1. Can we submit this app as free app in first place and add IAP functions later? Is there anything to take care of in first place which could deny adding IAP later to an app?

  2. Do the price tiers (0-87) apply to subscriptions in the same way? They are thinking of a year-based subscription for the lowest value, 1,19 Euro it is I guess. Is that possible?

Can't find anything on this in the docs and I have in mind, that it wasn't possible to switch from a free to a paid app later on in the past. Don't know if that is/was true, therefore I'm reaching out for help here.

Thanks!

Yes, you can release a free, and add in-app purchases later. You can see all prices and currencies via App Store Connect or App Store Connect API, they are different for auto-renewable subscriptions and other types of in-app purchases.

Go to App Store Connect > [Your App] > Subscriptions > [A subscription group] > [A subscription] > All Prices and Currencies for subscriptions.

Go to App Store Connect > [Your App] > In-App Purchases > [An in-app purchase] > All Prices and Currencies for other types of in-app purchases.
