AVPlayer Error -16170
Hi I'm trying to run a 4K video on my Apple TV 4K, but I get error in AVPlayer. Error Domain=CoreMediaErrorDomain Code=-16170 I can't get any more information. Example HSL Manifest with video track in 4K: #EXT-X-STREAM-INF:AUDIO="aud_mp4a.40.2",AVERAGE-BANDWIDTH=11955537,BANDWIDTH=12256000,VIDEO-RANGE=SDR,CODECS="hvc1.1.6.L153.90,mp4a.40.2",RESOLUTION=3840x2160,FRAME-RATE=50,HDCP-LEVEL=TYPE-1 video_4/stream.m3u8 Maybe, problem with hvc1 ? But as far as I know, Apple TV supports HEVC.

Fairplay expiration issue
We noticed the behaviour of expiration of FairPlay license changed from iOS 16.x to some version iOS 17 and the latest iOS 18.3.2 and Safari. On iOS 16.x, the video playback will stop when the license expires, but on iOS 17.x + the video continues but no audio and no error fired. On latest Safari the video and audio all continues. Any changes for the latest FairPlay and how we adapt this from the license server? Thanks

HLS ignores MP4 transformation matrix
When playing an HLS .m3u8 playlist containing fragmented MP4 segments which specify a transformation matrix (defined in the Movie Header Box (mvhd) and Track Header Box (tkhd) atoms in ISO 14496-12), for instance a 90 degree clockwise rotation, the transformation is ignored and the video plays untransformed. Occurs both in Quicktime Player as well as well as Safari when playing the .m3u8 playlist. Concatenating the init.mp4 and .m4s files in the playlist into a file and playing the resulting file does apply the transformation, both in Quicktime Player and Safari. Am I doing something wrong? Are MP4 transformations not supported in HLS only? Rotations and flips seem like a pretty fundamental use case, otherwise video needs to be transcoded. Sample files to reproduce issue here: https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=222781

What affect is 'Low Latency HLS' Capabilities in App ID Configuration Page?
Hi, I wanna test playing ll-hls in simulator, my devices and other tester's devices. the key 'com.apple.developer.coremedia.hls.low-latency', introduced at https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2019/502, was disabled in XCode. Thus I can't add this key to my entitlement. But This capabilities table, (https://developer.apple.com/help/account/reference/supported-capabilities-ios/), said ADP only can add 'Low Latency HLS' to App ID Configuration. I've also checked I can add this capability in my ADP memberships and my App page. Is it possible to play ll-hls only for apps that have been checked 'Low Latency HLS' Capability and distributed to AppStore or TestFlights? If I run directly by xcode to my device, I can't play ll-hls? I couldn't find any documentations about 'Low Latency HLS' Capability and its affect.

AirPlay 2: video streaming - logs / debugging
Hello, We're developing a video streaming service. Can't get the video to stream on AirPlay2-enabled TVs, there is only a loader visible on the tV. We can only get the sounds to stream to AirPlay2 speakers. Media Stream Validator and HLS report on the playlists, shows that the video segments are recognized as something but can't process them. "Processed 0 of 600 segments" etc. We're at a loss on how to debug this. Is there any way to get access to AirPlay 2 logs to see what isn't working?

AppleCoreMedia 1.0.0.21B101 always requesting 2 streams from ABR
Hi Team, We see an issue with this version if CoreMedia requesting multiple qualities at all times for a stream. We don't see this issue on 1.0.0.21C62. We are unsure what would be causing this. Custom FairPlay DRM error handling mechanics
Hi, I have a usecase where I'd like to handle and prevent automatic retries whenever certain errors occur during FairPlay content key requests. Here's the current flow: FairPlay certificate is requested and obtained from my server makeStreamingContentKeyRequestData is called on the keyRequest The license server will return a 403 along with a body response containing a json with the detailed code and message The error is caught and handled properly by calling AVContentKeyRequest.processContentKeyResponseError The AVContentKeySession automatically retries up to 8 times by providing a new key request through public func contentKeySession(_ session: AVContentKeySession, didProvide keyRequest: AVContentKeyRequest) My license server gets hit with 8 requests that will always result in a 403, these retries are useless My custom error is succesfully caught later down the line through AVPlayerItem.observe(\.status), this is great Thing is.. I'd like to catch the 403 error and prevent any retry from being made at step 5, ideally through public func contentKeySession(_ session: AVContentKeySession, contentKeyRequest keyRequest: AVContentKeyRequest, didFailWithError err: Error) I've looked for quite a while and just can't seem to find any way of achieving this. Is this not supported at all?

How is the AVPlayer observedBitrate calculated?
What determines the value of the observedBitrate reported on the AVPlayerItemAccessLogEvent? When I experience a stall, can I determine whether it was due to network conditions by checking that the observedBitrate is higher than the media bitrate, or will it not be updated by that point? The docs describe the property as The empirical throughput, in bits per second, across all media downloaded. and the WWDC 2018 talk Measuring and Optimizing HLS Performance says An observed bitrate is the current network bandwidth. To me, the indication here is that it represents the download speed in bits/sec of recent segments. However, this doesn't seem to be reflected in my testing. When limiting my connection throughput with the network link conditioner, I notice that it tends to take about 30 seconds for the observed bitrate to drop. When I disable the network completely, the observedBitrate doesn't change for a minute, then drops straight to 0. In addition to those observations, I've also seen cases where the reported observedBitrate is lower than the bitrate required to support the stream yet I didn't experience buffering, like when it was reporting around 87Kbps while I know the encoded media was ~97Kbps. All of this said, it's not clear to me what this value represents. Is it an average over a certain period of time? What is actually being calculated and over what time period?

Apple Music / MusicKit Commercial Integration Enquiry – Multiplayer Music Game
Hello, Could this please be forwarded to the team responsible for Apple Music / MusicKit commercial integrations, developer partnerships and licensing? I am currently assessing the feasibility of developing a commercial browser-based multiplayer music game and would like to understand whether Apple Music and MusicKit could support the proposed use case. At a high level, players would privately select tracks from the Apple Music catalogue within the game. Once selections are complete, the application would arrange the selected tracks for sequential playback through a shared host account/device. Players would then interact with those tracks through the game. The application would provide the game functionality and would not download, store or independently redistribute full music recordings. Before progressing with development, I would appreciate clarification on the following: Commercial game use: Is integration of the Apple Music catalogue and MusicKit playback functionality into a commercial multiplayer game permitted? If specific approval, licensing or a commercial agreement with Apple is required, what is the appropriate process? Monetisation: Can the game itself be monetised through subscriptions, one-off purchases/party passes or advertising, provided users are paying for the game functionality rather than access to Apple Music or its catalogue? Apple Music subscription requirements: Would the account providing full-track playback need an active Apple Music subscription? If so, would only the host/playback account require a subscription, while other participants could join the game, search/select tracks and vote without having an Apple Music subscription themselves? Commercial playback alternative: If an Apple Music subscription is required for full-track playback, does Apple offer any commercial, licensing or partnership arrangement whereby the game operator could fund the necessary playback rights directly, rather than requiring the host to hold an individual Apple Music subscription? Catalogue access: Can players search the Apple Music catalogue and select tracks from within the application without every participant individually authenticating with Apple Music or holding an Apple Music subscription? Track availability: Can MusicKit/API functionality confirm whether a selected track is available for playback in the host's storefront/territory before accepting the selection? Playback control: Can the application create and manage a temporary playback queue containing the selected tracks and initiate sequential playback through an authorised host account/device without requiring the host to manually locate and play each track in the Apple Music application? Audio previews: Are short audio previews available through Apple Music/MusicKit, and may these be used within a commercial multiplayer game to help users identify a track before selecting it? If so, are there restrictions on preview duration or monetised use? Multi-provider support: Would Apple's terms permit Apple Music to be offered as one of several supported music playback providers within the same application, allowing a host to choose Apple Music or another supported streaming service? Additional licensing: If full recordings continue to be delivered and played through Apple Music/MusicKit, would the game developer require any additional master recording, publishing, public-performance or other music licences directly from rights-holders or collecting societies? Web/browser implementation: As the initial product is intended to be browser-based rather than a native iOS application, can the above catalogue, authentication and playback functionality be implemented through MusicKit on the Web? Are there any material differences in commercial permissions or capabilities compared with a native MusicKit implementation? Scaling: Are there different MusicKit/API access, approval, rate-limit or commercial requirements if the application progresses from development/testing to a publicly available commercial product with a significant user base? At this stage I am primarily trying to establish whether a compliant technical and commercial model exists before investing in development. If this enquiry would be better directed to an Apple Music partnership, MusicKit, licensing or business-development team, I would appreciate being pointed towards the appropriate contact. I would be happy to provide further technical details about the proposed integration if required. Kind regards, Errol Brinkman

Video Streaming Site and working with Safari Autoplay Policy
Hello all, I am currently developing a video streaming site and am currently working on the video player. The site will be serving video content using HLS given that this will be quite sizable and long video content. Given that the main functionality of the site is to watch streaming video, when a user clicks on a video to watch, when the video player page opens, the desire is to have the video start playing automatically with sound. Safari autoplay policy basically rejects attempts to autoplay video content with audio unless the audio starts muted, otherwise, the user needs to interact with the player in order to start the video playing with audio unmuted. Given that the main purpose of the site is to watch these videos, it would be hugely detrimental to require the user to interact with the player to either start playing the video, or to unmute it. Many sites such as YouTube, Twitch, and others obviously have autoplay functionality that works as I would expect for a video-centric site in Safari. Given their size, I imagine they have some agreement with Safari team to have their site pre-authorized to allow autoplay with audio. How do I go about doing this? Hoping someone might be able to share some information that would be useful to ensure I can have things configured correctly such that my Safari users won't have to suffer having to manually start playing, or turn on their audio in order to enjoy the videos the same way Chrome and Firefox users will automatically. Thanks!

rewind through EXT-X-DISCONTINUITY
I have recorded content in which there is an EXT-X-DISCONTINUITY flag (an error occurred while recording content), the time points of the beginning of the content look like this: Start Time : 10005, dur 5s EXT-X-DISCONTINUITY Start Time : 100, dur 5s Start Time : 105, dur 5s I did not find in rfc8216 whether such content is valid at all, and should the player even rewind time through this flag without errors?

HLS output - influence fragment time.
Hello, I'm trying to create HLS output with segment time of 6 seconds, but sync samples (fragments) every 1 second. I want to have AVAssetWriter write a sync sample / moof header every second. Am I correct in understanding that I could only achieve this with a pre-fragmented MP4 and use a passthrough rendition with setting preferredOutputSegmentInterval to indefinite and running flushSegment() as needed? Or is there another method using AVFoundation? Thanks in advance.

I think there is an mistake in D Function implementation. Any clue whats wrong? Thank you

Hi I am trying to implement D Function in python. import hashlib from Crypto.Cipher import AES from Crypto.Hash import SHA from Crypto.Util.Padding import pad as padding from Crypto.PublicKey import RSA PRIME = 813416437 NB_RD = 16 def dfunction(R2, ASk): tmp = bytearray(20) pad = bytearray(64) MBlock = [0] * 14 P = PRIME if len(R2) >= 56: return -1 # kDRMSKDServerParamErr # Padding until a multiple of 56B pad[:len(R2)] = R2 pad[len(R2)] = 0x80 pad[len(R2) + 1:56] = [0] * (56 - len(R2) - 1) # Create 14 32b values for i in range(14): MBlock[i] = (pad[4 * i] << 24) ^ (pad[4 * i + 1] << 16) ^ (pad[4 * i + 2] << 8) ^ pad[4 * i + 3] # Reunify into 2 32 bits values #MBlock[0] += sum(MBlock[1:7]) #MBlock[1] = 0 #MBlock[1] += sum(MBlock[7:]) # Reunify into 2 32 bits values for i in range(1, 7): MBlock[0] += MBlock[i] MBlock[1] = 0 for i in range(7): MBlock[1] += MBlock[i + 7] # Apply the function (C_r) for i in range(2): for r in range(NB_RD): if MBlock[i] & 1: MBlock[i] >>= 1 else: MBlock[i] = (3 * MBlock[i] + 1) % P # Append to M for i in range(4): pad[56 + i] = (MBlock[0] >> (8 * i)) & 0xFF pad[60 + i] = (MBlock[1] >> (8 * i)) & 0xFF h = hashlib.sha1() h.update(pad) hh = h.digest()[:16] cipher = AES.new(ASk, AES.MODE_ECB) DASk = cipher.encrypt(padding(hh, AES.block_size)) return DASk Then, i am trying to match integrities and they does not match. I think there is an mistake in D Function implementation. Any clue whats wrong? Thank you

Virtual multiple display modes are not on Mac
Macs do not support Multi-Stream Transport (MST), which prevents from using a single DisplayPort or USB-C port to daisy-chain multiple external monitors in an extended display mode. So the the virtual multiple display modes are not working correctly on Mac.
