“Popping Sound”

Just to add - I actually use external speakers on my Macbook Pro M1 Pro chip - and they also pop. I recently replaced them because I thought it might be the device or a short in the cabling... but no. It's the device. I moved the same speakers over to my Windows desktop, and they didn't pop once. The pop is loud enough, and frequent enough (even when I'm not listening to audio) that I have to unplug them every night. Which for how expensive this device was, is inexcusable. I am require to use Apple products for work, but I'll never understand this obsession.

Today I upgraded to MAC OS 12.6.7. After I restarted my mac XCode asked me to install additional shared components. I did. This didn't help. According to XCode Help You can go to File > Project Settings... This will show a panel that will have a pop-up menu to select either the old or new Build System. This sounded promising but unfortunately In XCode 14.2 there isn't really any pop-up menu to do this. No help from DTS.

2021 Macbook Pro, 16, M1 with similar, short crackle/pop/fart sounds at any volume, which has worsened to roughly every 1-2 minutes. Did anyone have a permanent fix by taking it to the Apple Store?

Hey thanks for the great question! The sounds and haptics you hear and feel from VoiceOver are controlled by the system. There is not an interface for third party apps to instruct VoiceOver to play certain sounds necessarily. When a screen changed notification gets sent to VoiceOver for example, the system plays a sound to let the user know a big layout change occurred and that the VoiceOver cursor is getting repositioned. In a sense you can accomplish this too in your app by posting a screen changed or layout changed notification, but in terms of playing other sounds for new rows, entering/exiting containers, or interacting with pop up menus are not sounds you can play explicitly.

I’m having this same issue without Yubikey in which hitting any key yields a system notification sound. The only thing that fixes it is a hard reboot. I think there is some warning/notification pop-up somewhere on the desktop associated with an app or service that is preventing users from entering text before acting on or dismissing it. The problem is that this pop-up is, evidently, invisible. The last time this happened I shut down and the last thing I could see before the screen went dark was an error pop-up that I couldn’t find when it was on. It flashed only for a split second and I couldn’t make out what it was related to. Just a hunch, but if there’s a way to see all active pop-ups that require input we’d probably find the culprit; I think this is a bug associated with a hidden pop-up.

Beta 4 now installed and clicking/popping still present through Audioqest Dragonfly 1.2. Unable to test at present on other USB DAC but may do so later today. Suspect an ongoing USB Audio issue in 10.11.

Apparently on my previous tries, I must have had an error of some sort. Thanks now to @daneover and the great step-by-step guide they provided, I'm now listening to some tunes on YouTube, via my Mackie Onyx-1220i 's Firewire connection!! Mac mini 2023 with M2 Pro | 32GB RAM MacOS Sequoia 15.6.1 Followed the instructions in sections 1, 2, and 3. No apparent issues installing the FW kext from the AppleFWAudioVentura.pkg. Downloaded the ZIP file & extracted the .pkg to my desktop. Note: One thing I did not do is have the Mackie connected to my Mini via FW during the whole install/config. I waited until the last step in part 3 (after double reboot) to finally get connected. Also of note, I have had success via 2 different ways to connect to my Mini. In previous attempts, I tried the dongle daisy chain method with a FW800 (male) > FW400 (female) adapter connected to the Apple FW800 > TB2 adapter, and finally the TB2 > TB3 adapter. I have noticed Audio on my iMac (27-inch 2020) Big Sur (now up to 11.6 and below) has produced audio popping and distortion noises occasionally. When the system gets into this state Skype just hangs , and forcequitting and restarting it just brings it back to a point where it hangs upon needing to use audio. killall -9 coreaudiod resolves the issue of Skype hanging, and the audio issues. I am not using bluetooth , nor external speakers, but the issue does tend to manifest after playing world of tanks, not sure if this is triggering the problem or suffering from the same problem brought on from somewhere else.

I have the same problem. There are small audio glitches from time to time (more if you have a memory-hungry app open at the same time) with a USB sound card from RME. If I increase the sample rate to 192 kHz the problem seems to get worse and I can also hear glitches / popping / crackling on the internal loudspeakers. From what I’ve read so far, this seems to be a serial issue with a lot of the newer macs. The same device (RME sound card) works flawlessly on an iPad or some other digital audio source. I’ve also wiped my machine completely and had it checked for hardware defects by Apple. The problem persists.
