Localisation on Apple Watch
Hi everyone! I’m a new developer diving into my first Apple Watch project, and I’m really excited to get started! This app relies heavily on using the most precise location data possible. Could anyone point me to some official documentation or helpful resources on how to achieve high-accuracy location tracking specifically for watchOS? Any tips or best practices would also be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for your help!

Underground location (in subway) doesn't update properly
We (at the NYC MTA) are building a new subway/bus app and diving deep into location tracking on iOS. We’re encountering an issue with how Core Location functions in the subway, specifically regarding how long it takes to update a passenger’s location as they travel from station to station. As an example, please see this video: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1yaddkjyPEETvTEmClPAJ2wks8b-_whqB/view?usp=sharing The red dot is set manually (via a tap gesture) and represents the ground truth of where the phone actually is at that moment. The most critical moment to observe is when the train physically arrives at a station (i.e., when I can see the platform outside my window). At this moment, I update the red dot to the center of the station on the map. Similarly, I adjust the red dot when the train departs a station, placing it just outside the station in the direction of travel. The trip shown is from Rector St to 14 St. All times are in EST. I’d like to investigate this issue further since providing a seamless underground location experience is crucial for customers. As a point of comparison, Android phones exhibit near-perfect behavior, proving that this is technically feasible. We want to ensure the iOS experience is just as smooth.

Zspeedaccuracy question
Hello everyone, I'm doing some work on validating some data to do with the zpseed functionality around corelocations, i've read up on the speedaccuracy field but the wording doesn't make sense to me. It says if its a positive number it is plus or minus the value in the zspeed column so would this be for example zspeed of 35 mps with an accuracy of 3 mps would it be 32 mps 38 mps or is it a range? so would it be anywhere between 32-38 mps. Or is it just plus or minus the 3mps and if this is the case how would it be worked out if its plus or minus when all the numbers will be a positive numbers as any negative numbers are deemed inaccurate ?

Lifecycle and Usage of CLServiceSession after the app is terminated
Hi, I am creating a Driving Behaviour Monitoring app in which I range beacons and I require location updates in foreground, background and in terminated state all the time. I am using CLServiceSession with "Always Authorisation" to get location events. I create CLServiceSession object in the foreground and start monitoring driving and then re-create it when the app is relaunched after termination. Doing this works fine. But sometimes when app is terminated and is not opened again, the app runs on its own even when the device is stationary ( I can see the app is using Location in the Control Centre) and after that Location updates are not received and I am not able to track the driving behaviour. I tried to add diagnostics to know the cause and found "Insufficiently In Use" and then "Service Session Required" in the diagnostics. It would be of great help if the proper usage of CLServiceSession is provided. Important Question: When does the CLServiceSession gets invalidated or destroyed that was created when the app was in foreground ? What happens to the CLServiceSession which was created in the foreground if the app is not opened for long duration, let's say a day or two?

GPS HDOP
I have a marine navigation app which displays GPS quality information when receiving NMEA message from an external GPS. These include the number of satellites and Horizontal Dilution of Precision (HDOP). As far as I can see, the only additional information available through location services (for devices with built in GPS) is horizontal and vertical accuracy. Am I missing anything? Also does anyone know how horizontal accuracy is derived from HDOP?

Live Activity does not work as a proxy for CLBackgroundActivitySession
Hi, I've watched the WWDC video "Discover streamlined location updates" As detailed here: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2023/10180/?time=364 In order for my app to receive location updates in the background, the video states that I can either use a live activity or a CLBackgroundActivitySession My app has a live activity, however the location updates stop shortly (10 seconds, this is the normal "grace period" described) after backgrounding the app, even when the live activity is visible. If I acquire a CLBackgroundActivitySession, location updates continue in the background. I have reproduced this behavior in the Simulator in a barebones app for testing and confirmed that it's not working as described. My question is: Should I hold a CLBackgroundActivitySession even when I already have a Live Activity?

Improving MapKit JS Load Times – Is Bundling Allowed?
Hey everyone, I’m using MapKit JS in a web app and wanted to ask if anyone has experience optimizing its loading performance. Initially, I was using the core version of MapKit JS, but some users reported issues—certain modules weren’t immediately available, and they had to wait quite a while before the map became usable. Switching to the full version helped somewhat, but I’m still seeing delays. In some cases, MapKit JS isn’t fully ready even after 10 seconds. To reduce these delays, I’m considering bundling MapKit JS directly into my site’s JavaScript bundle (rather than loading it externally). My hope is that this could improve load times and reduce dependency on external script loading. Before I try this, I want to make sure this doesn’t go against Apple’s usage policies for MapKit JS. Has anyone tried this approach? Is bundling MapKit JS allowed? Or are there better ways to improve the loading experience? Thanks in advance!

Sync Conflict Between Contacts & Maps, Possible Cross-App Link with Home App Issue
Pinned 2 homes address for the same contact Steps Initial check in Apple Maps No saved places or pinned addresses appear. Open Personal Contacts You have two addresses stored in your contact card: Main and Home. Pin & Edit “Main” You pinned the Main address in Maps. Refined the location on the map. Renamed it (but still saved under the type “My Home”). Open “Home” Address in Contacts Refined the location again. Changed the type to “My Home.” Attempted to rename, but no option to change the label. Final Saved Places View Shows two entries both called “Main.” Opening either of them displays the same details for the Home address. Saved Places list only shows the full address text, without the ability to rename them inside Maps. Results Both addresses appear duplicated with the same name (“Main”), even though they point to different underlying addresses. When selecting either entry, Apple Maps incorrectly shows the same Home address details. The Saved Places section does not allow renaming; it defaults to showing the full address string. Issues Identified Sync Conflict Between Contacts & Maps Apple Maps pulls labels/types from Contacts, but the edits don’t update consistently across apps. Duplicate Naming Bug Both “Main” and “Home” collapse into “Main” in Saved Places, making them indistinguishable. One-to-One Mapping Failure Regardless of which saved place you open, Maps shows the same Home entry, meaning the system isn’t correctly binding each saved place to its respective contact address. Renaming Limitation Apple Maps doesn’t allow renaming saved addresses directly — it relies on Contacts. Since Contacts only supports preset labels (Home, Work, School, etc.), custom naming is blocked.

How to open Enhanced Apple Maps page from iOS app
I'm trying to create a link from a restaurant annotation on a map in my app (created using MapKit) that will open the Apple Maps app on an iphone. I've been using the Restaurant name, telephone number, and coordinates and cannot get applemaps to open the enhanced page (which contains photographs and customer reviews and is much more descriptive than the page that is opening, which only shows the location on a map with the phone number and coordinates. It is not that descriptive, and I'm trying to create a request that will make it very easy to jump back and forth between my app and the enhanced page on apple maps. here's what I'm using in my request: " private func openInAppleMaps() { let coordinate = CLLocationCoordinate2D(latitude: restaurant.latitude, longitude: restaurant.longitude) let placemark = MKPlacemark(coordinate: coordinate) let mapItem = MKMapItem(placemark: placemark) mapItem.name = restaurant.name if let phone = restaurant.telephone1 { mapItem.phoneNumber = phone } mapItem.openInMaps(launchOptions: [MKLaunchOptionsShowsTrafficKey: true]) } }" the entire file is attached. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. RestaurantCallOutBox.swift

Apple Maps Server API Unauthorized Error
I'm trying to use the new Apple Maps Server API. As far as I can tell I have set up the token correctly, but my web request is still returning 401 unauthorized. The following is my code in TypeScript: import * as jwt from 'jsonwebtoken'; const JWT_SECRET = "-----BEGIN PRIVATE KEY-----\n" + "MIGTAgEAMBMGBy..............................\n" + "..............................................................\n" + "..............................................................\n" + "-----END PRIVATE KEY-----"; const header = { alg: "ES256", kid: "26DYPK65ZK", typ: "jwt" } // Example payload data const payload = { "iss": "7F3PBYWYMS", "iat": Date.now(), "exp": Date.now() + (1000 * 30 * 60), }; export async function getRestaurants() { let token = jwt.sign(payload, JWT_SECRET, { algorithm: 'ES256', header: header}); const response = await fetch('https://maps-api.apple.com/v1/token (https://maps-api.apple.com/v1/token)', { method: 'GET', headers: { 'Authorization': "Bearer " + token }, }); console.log(response); } What am I doing incorrectly here?

Polyline rendering below street labels in MapKitJS
Hello (: I’m working with MapKitJS and would like to render polylines that follow roads — similar to the behavior seen on maps.apple.com. While I can align polylines to roads manually, I haven’t found a way to render them below street names and road shields. Currently, all polylines appear above labels, which reduces readability when displaying routes in urban areas. On maps.apple.com, polylines are rendered under street labels, which provides a much cleaner appearance. Is there a way to achieve this layering behavior in MapKitJS? If not, are there plans to support this kind of layer control in the future? Thanks in advance! MapKitJS (5.45.0): maps.apple.com:

How can I prevent virtual location from affecting the security of my app
Hello, I have noticed that some users have modified their real location through an app called "MGU" to bypass my app's security checks. I want to know how to protect my app and detect users using virtual location. I have reproduced the process of virtual positioning here: Insert a plug-in through the interface at the bottom of the phone and connect it via Bluetooth on the phone Set the desired positioning target on the "MGU" app Turn off your phone's WiFi, network, and location for 10 seconds, then turn it back on At this point, virtual positioning is successful. Please assist me in troubleshooting this issue and inform me of the principle of implementing virtual positioning in this app and how to prevent it. The following is the screen recording of virtual positioning operation: https://flowus.cn/share/145b3232-26c3-4ea3-b3ff-4aad1495eb4d

Clarification on the correct use for CLServiceSession
While updating my app for iOS 18 I have run into some major issues with how CLMonitor and visit tracking are handled in the background. I have implemented the new CLServiceSession (i think) correctly. In my @main App struct's init method I call CLServiceSession(authorization: .always) to create a session. This is done in the foreground when the app is launched and also in the background. From what i understand this is the intended way to create a session as when the app is relaunched by the system the existing session is terminated a few moments later. What im seeing in iOS 18 vs iOS 17 is drastically less location updates being delivered to the app. i see around the same significant updates being delivered (around 1 per mile - 5 miles) but the CLMonitor.CircularGeographicConditions are being triggered at about 1 per 1 to 2 minutes regardless of the radius. When a zone is left the condition is removed in the background and a new condition is created at the next place it should be tracking. For visit tracking, it only reports a visit correctly about 10% of the time. my guess is the app is getting suspended and/or terminated and the CLServiceSession isn't correctly being reinitialized (or something completely different, i'm really not sure at this point) I would love some guidance as to the correct way to handle these updates in iOS 18. It is unclear if these are intentional limitations imposed in iOS 18, incorrect implementation on my part, or a bug in the betas. Note: startUpdatingLocation is not appropriate for this app as it is way too power hungry.
