Recently I started getting emails from AppStoreConnect when I submit new builds The email states:
ITMS-90863: Macs with Apple silicon support issue - The app links with libraries that aren’t present in macOS: /usr/lib/swift/libswiftCloudKit.dylib
I can run this app on apple silicon from TestFlight or directly from Xcode and it runs just fine including all iCloud functions. This app has been using iCloud for several years now.
So my question is: Should I just ignore the email or do I need to change something to bring this app into compliance?
Hey folks, I'm having an issue where iCloud sync is only working in the Development environment, not on Prod. I have deployed the schema to Prod through the CloudKit console, although I did it after the app went live on the AppStore. Even though the two schema are identical, iCloud sync just doesn't work on Prod.
Things I tried on the code side:

I've no idea why Apple would include this CoreData setup in a SwiftData documentation, but I went ahead and adapted it to my code as well. I see now that some new "assets" were added to my Development schema, but I'm afraid to deploy these changes to Prod, since I'm not even confident that this CoreData setup is necessary in a SwiftData app.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Have you run into similar issues? Any help would be much appreciated; thanks!
I have an app that uses SwiftData with CloudKit to synchronize data across a users devices. I'm able to replicate data created on one device on another and when removing data, it is also removed on the other device. So, I know that SwiftData and CloudKit are configured correctly.
What I'd like to do though, is to ensure that if a user installs the app on an additional device, that the data is synchronized upon app start.
When testing my app on a third device, via TestFlight, there was no data in the app upon launch even though all three devices are using the same Apple account (e.g. Apple ID).
What is the best way to achieve this?

I have a mac os app that I am developing. It is backed by a SwiftData database. I'm trying to set up cloudkit so that the app's data can be shared across the user's devices. However, I'm finding that every tutorial i find online makes it sound super easy, but only discusses it from the perspective of ios.
The instructions typically say:
Add the iCloud capability.
Select CloudKit from its options.
Press + to add a new CloudKit container, or select one of your existing ones.
Add the Background Modes capability.
Check the box "Remote Notifications" checkbox from its options.
I'm having issue with the following:
I don't see background modes showing up or remote notifications checkbox since i'm making a mac os app.
If i do the first 3 steps only, when i launch my app i get an app crash while trying to load the persistent store. Here is the exact error message:

The fatal error in the catch block happens when i run the app.
My macOS app is developed using SwfitUI, SwiftData, and CloudKit. In the development environment, CloudKit works well. Locally added models can be quickly viewed in the CloudKit Console. macOS app and iOS app with the same BundleID can also synchronize data normally when developing locally. However, in the production environment, the macOS app cannot synchronize data with iCloud. But iOS app can. The models added in the production environment are only saved locally and cannot be viewed in CloudKit Console Production.
I am sure I have configured correctly, container schema changes to deploy to the Production environment. I think there may be a problem with CloudKit in macOS.
Please help troubleshoot the problem. I can provide you with any information you need.

Let's say I have a CloudKit database schema where I have records of type Author that are referenced by multiple records of type Article.
I want to delete an Author record if no Article is referencing it. Now consider the following conflict:
device A deleted the last Article referencing Author #42
device B uploads a new Article referencing Author #42 at the same time
The result should be that Author #42 is not deleted after both operations are finished. But both device don't know from each other changes. So either device B could miss that device A deleted the author. Or device A could have missed that a new Article was uploaded and therefore the Author #42 was deleted right after the upload of device B.
I though about using a reference count first. But this won't work if the ref count is part of the Author record. This is because deletions do not use the changeTag to detect lost updates: If device A found a reference count 0 and decides to delete the Author, it might miss that device B incremented the count meanwhile.
I currently see two alternatives:
Using a second record that outlives the Author to keep the reference count and using an atomic operation to update and delete it. So if the update fails, the delete would fail either.
Always adding a new child record to the Author whenever a reference is made. We could call it ReferenceToken. Since child records may not become dangling, CloudKit would stop a deletion, if a new ReferenceToken sets the parent reference to the Author.
Are there any better ways doing this?
How can I set the display name of the CloudKit container in Settings -> iCloud -> Manage Storage.
I have multiple containers, some legacy, and some for certain modules that are shared among a suite of apps. The problem is all Containers show the same name so it is not possible to advise a user which containers are safe to delete. I am using NSPersistentCloudKitContainer.
I have a CKRecord that references an CKAsset. If I understand it correctly, CKSyncEngine would download the asset every time the record has changed on the server. (Of course it would try to use the local asset cache, but worst-case it might be already flushed)
The documentation for CKAsset says that asset downloads can be prevented by limiting the requested record keys using the desiredKeys property on the fetch operation. But I don't see any possibility to set this property when using CKSyncEngine.
Did I miss something? Are there any alternatives?
The same macOS app is logged into the same iCloud account on two Macs. The apps on both devices can sync data with iCloud, but the data between them is isolated. When I was developing, I just enabled the CloudKit(SwiftData host in iCloud) capability and did not do anything special. I thought that the same app and the same iCloud account should sync the same data between different devices. Why is the cloud data on these two Macs isolated?
I have been using the basic NSPersistentContainer with 100k+ records for a while now with no issues. The database size can fluctuate a bit but on average it takes up about 22mb on device.
When I switch the container to NSPersistentCloudKitContainer, I see a massive increase in size to ~150mb initially. As the sync engine uploads records to iCloud it has ballooned to over 600mb on device. On top of that, the user's iCloud usage in settings reports that it takes up 1.7gb in the cloud.
I understand new tables are added and history tracking is enabled but the size increase seems a bit drastic. I'm not sure how we got from 22mb to 1.7gb with the exact same data.
A few other things that are important to note:
I import all the 100k+ records at once when testing the different containers. At the time of the initial import there is only 1 relation (an import group record) that all the records are attached to.
I save the background context only once after all the records and the import group have been made and added to the context.
After the initial import, some of these records may have a few new relations added to them over time. I suppose this could be causing some of the size increase, but its only about 20,000 records that are updated.
None of the records include files/ large binary data.
Most of the attributes are encrypted.
I'm syncing to the dev iCloud environment.
When I do make a change to a single attribute in a record, CloudKit reports that every attribute has been modified (not sure if this is normal or not )
Also, When syncing to a new device, the sync can take hours - days. I'm guessing it's having to sync both the new records and the changes, but it exponentially gets slower as more records are downloaded. The console will show syncing activity, but new records are being added at a slower rate as more records are added. After about 50k records, it grinds to a halt and while the console still shows sync activity, only about 100 records are added every hour.
All this to say i'm very confused where these issues are coming from. I'm sure its a combination of how i've setup my code and the vast record count, record history, etc.
If anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated.

I have Core Data setup with a NSPersistentCloudKitContainer as my container, I've added a container identifier and I see my data on CloudKit's database here when I use "Act As iCloud Account". Here's what I have under capabilities in Xcode
However, on my device when I go to Settings > Apple Account > iCloud > Saved to iCloud and switch off my app, all the data saved to Core Data is removed. I suspected this working as intended. When I switch it back on, all the data comes back. However (x2), the support page here says it should remain on the device:
When you turn it off, the app no longer connects with iCloud, so your data exists only on your device
Am I missing something in how I integrated Core Data in Xcode? Do I need to explicitly configure something with Apple's SDK to get the behavior described in the support page?
I've noticed for some of Apple's apps, when you switch off iCloud there's an action sheet asking what you'd like to do with the local data. I figured this was Apple's magic without sharing especially since the buttons looked different

However (x3), not all apps that had this option offered "Keep on My iPhone", so perhaps the supported behavior is to remove what's on the device and these Apple apps implemented their own support to keep a copy on the device.

I've tried testing some 3rd-party apps but couldn't convince myself they were using Core Data with iCloud enabled. Instead, it looked like they were using iCloud as a backup
Ive been getting this error on an app in the dev environment since iOS16. it continues to happen in the latest iOS release (iOS18).
After this error/warning, CoreData_CloudKit stops syncing and the only way to fix it is to delete the app from all devices, reset the CloudKit dev environment, reload the schema and reload all data. im afriad that if I ever go live and get this error in production there won't be a way to fix it given I cant go and reset the production CloudKit environment.
It doesn't happen straight away after launching my app in a predictable manner, it can take several weeks to happen.
Ive posted about this before here and haven't got a response. I also have a feedback assistant issue submitted in 2022 as part of ios16 beta that is still open: FB10392936 for a similar issue that caused the same error.
would like to submit a code level support query but it doest seem to have anything to do with my code - but rather the Apple core data CloudKit syncing mechanism.

Hello, I`m working on an app that uses CloudKit and CKShare, but the app has 2 different targets, one for professional and one for patients, and theoretically the target of the professional sends the CKShare and the target of the patient should accept, but the ckshare tries to always open the target of the profissional, I would like to know if the are any way to configure the CKShare to oppen the target od the patients
While reading CkSyncEngine demo project code, I don't find the code to remove items in syncEngine.state.pendingRecordZoneChanges explicitly. I suspect it might occur in two possible places: nextRecordZoneChangeBatch() or ``nextRecordZoneChangeBatch()`, but I can't figure out how it occurs.

IMHO, when user switches account, the most important thing is to reload data from the new account's document folder. However, I can't see this is done anywhere. In above code, if shouldDeleteLocalData is false, self.appData would still hold the previous account's local data. That seems very wrong. Am I missing something?
It would be best if iOS restarts all applications when user switches account. If that's not the case (I guess so, otherwise there is no point to handle .accountChange in the app), I think application should implement an API to re-initialize itself.
EDIT: after looking at the code again, I realize that the following code makes sure shouldDeleteLocalData is always true when user switching accounts. So the code doesn't leak the previous account's data, though I still think it has an issue - it doesn't load the new account's data.
