iOS Dynamically loaded custom fonts in WidgetKit not working on real device (simulator is fine). Sandbox chronod deny file-read-data for font file.
Project structure is: App target + widget extension + widget intent extension All share a common appgroup group.com.x.y and all file handling is done using FileManager.default.containerURL(forSecurityApplicationGroupIdentifier: "group.com.x.y") so that only the shared container is used. Using the Main app target, a font "Chewy-Regular.ttf" is downloaded and saved to the shared AppGroup container. Font can now be loaded via CTFontManagerRegisterFontsForURL and displayed in a Main App Text view Text("Testing...").font(Font.custom("Chewy-Regular", size: 20)) Now add a Widgetkit widget instance that uses this font. In 'getTimeLine() and getSnapShot() of IntentTimelineProvider we load the font again via CTFontManagerRegisterFontsForURL (this needs to happen again probably because widget runs in a separate process from the main app?). On simulator, the widget will show the correct font. BUT On iPhone7 real device, the widget will show the 'redacted placeholder view'. It seems that something is crashing. I see in the device console : error 14:39:07.567120-0800 chronod No configuration found for configured widget identifier: D9BF75EE-4A04-441A-8C85-1507F7ECE379 fault 14:39:07.625600-0800 widgetxExtension -[EXSwiftUI_Subsystem beginUsing:withBundle:] unexpectedly called multiple times. error 14:39:07.672733-0800 chronod Encountered an error reading the view archive for <private>; error: <private> error 14:39:07.672799-0800 chronod [co.appevolve.onewidget.widgetx:widgetx:small:1536744920620481560@148.0/148.0/20.2] reload: could not decode view error 14:39:07.674984-0800 kernel Sandbox: chronod(2128) deny(1) file-read-metadata /private/var/mobile/Containers/Shared/AppGroup/9B524570-1765-4C24-9E0C-15BC3982F0DC/downloadedFonts/Chewy/Chewy-Regular.ttf error 14:39:07.675762-0800 kernel Sandbox: chronod(2128) deny(1) file-read-data /private/var/mobile/Containers/Shared/AppGroup/9B524570-1765-4C24-9E0C-15BC3982F0DC/downloadedFonts/Chewy/Chewy-Regular.ttf error 14:39:07.708914-0800 chronod [u 8D2C83B3-A6CB-432E-A9D4-9BC8F7056B10:m (null)] [<private>(<private>)] Connection to plugin invalidated while in use. fault 14:39:07.710284-0800 widgetxExtension -[EXSwiftUI_Subsystem beginUsing:withBundle:] unexpectedly called multiple times. error 14:39:07.803468-0800 chronod Encountered an error reading the view archive for <private>; error: <private> It seems that it's a permission issue, and the textview can't access the font file it needs when the widget is rendering. Adding a custom widget to the Capture group in Control Center
I noticed that with iOS 18, when adding a widget to the Control Center, there is now some "grouping system". I'm interested in the Capture group, which contains native widgets from Apple as well as third party apps like Instagram and Blackmagic cam, widgets in this group open the camera. My widget also opens the camera in my app, how can I add it to this group?

Live Activity Update Not Working Consistently in the Background
Hi everyone, I’m working on implementing Live Activities in my app, and I’ve encountered an issue where the Live Activity updates work intermittently when the app is in the background. Sometimes they update correctly, but at other times, they don’t update at all, even though they should be running in the background. However, when the app is brought to the foreground, the updates happen correctly. A few things I’ve checked: The app is using ActivityKit to update the Live Activity with Activity.update(). I’ve enabled the necessary background modes in the Capabilities section. Is there a possibility that I’m hitting the system budget limit while experiencing this issue? If this is a limitation, how can I avoid it or manage this situation? Has anyone else faced this issue? Any advice or potential solutions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

push-to-start notification does not reliably result in a new push-to-update token on the pushTokenUpdates async sequence
I've noticed that the when starting live activities via a remote push-to-start notification, the live activity widget consistently succeeds in displaying on the lock screen. However push-to-update token is not always received by the task observing the pushTokenUpdates async-sequence. Task { print("listening for pushTokenUpdates") for await pushToken in activity.pushTokenUpdates { let token = pushToken.map {String(format: "%02x", $0)}.joined() print("Push token: \(token)") } } The log will print "listening for pushTokenUpdates" however occasionally the "Push token: ___" line will not be present even when the widget has displayed on screen. This happens even if the "allow" button has been selected on live activities for that app. The inconsistent behavior leads me to believe there is an issue at the ActivityKit level. Would appreciate any feedback in debugging this!

WidgetKit WidgetConfigurationIntent Parameter Icons
In WatchOS 26 you can now configure Apple Watch Widgets that use AppIntents instead of having a preconfigured option via AppIntentRecommendation. This is demonstrated in the Weather Details Widget. Maximise background update on WatchOS
I'm looking to maximise my Watch app's widget to be as up to date as possible. If we imagined the app was a simple step counter, and we wanted to display the users count as up to date as possible. We can conclude: We don't care about widget timelines beyond the current entry as we can't predict the future! We need to refresh the count as often as possible The refresh should be very quick with a straightforward HealthKit query, no networking or heavy work needed. We will assume the user has the complication/widget on their active Watch face. With the standard WidgetKit APIs we can expire the timeline after 15 minutes and in my experimentation a Watch app can usually update its widget timeline at that frequency if it's on the Watch face. I'm experimenting with two methods to try and improve refreshes further A user's step count might not have recently changed when the timeline update is called. I was therefore looking into the HealthKit enableBackgroundDelivery API (which requires the HealthKit Background Delivery entitlement to be enabled) to get updates limited to once an hour from a HKObserverQuery, I can then call the WidgetCenter.shared.reloadAllTimelines() from there. WatchOS also support the BGAppRefreshTaskRequest(identifier:"") and .backgroundTask(.appRefresh) APIs. I can request updates once every 15 minutes here too and then call the WidgetCenter.shared.reloadAllTimelines(). With option 1, this update opportunity is great as it will specifically update when there's new steps so even once an hour this would be helpful (A real shame to be limited to once an hour even if this used up WidgetKit standard reload budgets: FB13879817, FB11677132, FB10016177). But I can't determine if this update takes away one of the standard timeline expiration updates that already run 4 times an hour? Could I observe additional Health types to get additional updates? Do I need the Background Modes Capability as well as the HealthKit Background Delivery for this in Xcode or just the HealthKit one? With option 2, I can't find a suitable option in the (short) list of supported background modes in Xcode. Does not selecting any mean my app will get 0 refreshes from this route and so should not be implemented in my use case?

Can I use .glassEffect() in Widget?
I’m testing .glassEffect() in a widget on the latest iOS 26 beta, but it seems to have no effect at all — the blur isn’t visible, and in some cases even white text disappears completely. Is this the expected behavior for widgets (i.e. glass effect is not supported), or could this be a bug in the beta? Would appreciate any clarification or pointers. Thanks!

Live Activity in terminated state
Hi. I need some help in starting the live activity in terminated state using push notification. I have developed an app which does not sleep and always run even in the background state. It is pressure calculator. From sensor, it will receive the pressure and display the values in the app. Whenever the pressure reaches a certain point, it should display the alert in the dynamic island. As of now, it is displaying live activity in the foreground state. Working partially fine in the background state. But not working in the terminated state. but in the documentation it have been mentioned we can start the live activity using push notification from any state. Please help me to find a solution.

Can developers use spatial image in third App's Spatial widget
Spatial widget is a new feature of visionos 26. I notice The system’s Photo app can add a Spatial Image in the widget. I wonder if third apps can use spatial image or any 3D content in it's widget? I try to use RealityView in widget and it run with a crash. So does spatial Image in widget only supported by the system Photo app, and not available to developers now?

[iOS 26] iOS App Does Not Receive Deep Link from Widget When Using widgetAccentedRenderingMode on Image
Summary When a SwiftUI widget uses a Link containing an Image modified with .widgetAccentedRenderingMode (using any mode except .fullColor), tapping the image on the widget launches the app but does not pass the expected deep link URL to the SceneDelegate. Steps to Reproduce Create a SwiftUI Widget View with a Link: struct ImageView: View { var image: UIImage var body: some View { Link(URL(string: "myapp://image")!) { Image(uiImage: image) .resizable() .widgetAccentedRenderingMode(.accentedDesaturated) // or any mode other than .fullColor .scaledToFill() .clipped() } } } Add Custom URL Scheme in Info.plist: <dict> <key>CFBundleURLName</key> <string>com.company.myapp</string> <key>CFBundleURLSchemes</key> <array> <string>myapp</string> </array> </dict> Implement Deep Link Handling in SceneDelegate: func scene(_ scene: UIScene, willConnectTo session: UISceneSession, options connectionOptions: UIScene.ConnectionOptions) { if let url = connectionOptions.urlContexts.first?.url { handle(url) } } func scene(_ scene: UIScene, openURLContexts urlContexts: Set<UIOpenURLContext>) { if let url = urlContexts.first?.url { handle(url) } } private func handle(_ url: URL) { // Process URL here } Run the application on a device or simulator. Add the widget to the Home Screen. Tap the image inside the widget. Expected Result The application launches and receives the URL in SceneDelegate, as expected. Actual Result The application launches, but the URL is not passed to SceneDelegate. Both connectionOptions.urlContexts and openURLContexts are empty.

Control Widget SF image cannot stably display
I'm working on the control widget which should display the SF image on the UI, but I have found that it cannot be displayed stably. I have eight CarCtrlWidgets which is about the type doorLock、chargeCover、frontBox、 locateCarLight、 locateCarHorn、 ventilate、 backBox and airCondition, it should all be showed but sometime they only show the text and placeholder. I'm aware of the images should be custom SF image and I can see them to show perfectly sometimes, but in other time it is just failed. This's really confused me, can anyone help me out? deviceversion 18.5;device model iPhone 16 pro;

Has Background Refresh Stopped Working on watchOS 26?
Hi everyone! My Apple Watch app has relied for years on the WKApplication.scheduleBackgroundRefresh(...) method to keep the app updated in the background. The system would reliably trigger WKApplicationDelegate.handle(_:), where I would then schedule the next refresh task (usually 15 minutes later). As stated in the documentation, as long as there is a complication on the watch face, these background tasks should run at a relatively stable frequency. However, this approach seems to have stopped working on watchOS 26. I no longer receive any WKApplicationRefreshBackgroundTask at all. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

How to get view backgrounds for widget with clear or tinted rendering
The calendar widget and buttons shows a lightened / material background behind some content when the widget is in clear / tinted mode (example here: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2025/278?time=72). How can this be done? I tried applying a material and glass background to a view using the .background(...) modifier, but the background is made white. Text("Hello") .padding() .background { ContainerRelativeShape() .fill(.thinMaterial) } Text("Hello") .padding() .background { ContainerRelativeShape() .glassEffect() } Is this not supported, a bug, or am I doing something wrong?

Detect if a widget is displayed in CarPlay vs. iPhone/iPad
I am looking into the new CarPlay support for systemSmall widgets introduced in iOS 26 (Apple documentation). I am trying to figure out if there is a way to programmatically detect whether the widget is currently being displayed on the iPhone/iPad home/lock screen or in CarPlay. So far, I haven’t found any information in the documentation or APIs that indicate how to distinguish between these environments. Is there an API, environment value, or best practice for handling this scenario? Thanks in advance for any insights!

Title and Subtitle in Control Widget on macOS Tahoe?
Hi 🙋 Has anybody gotten subtitles in macOS Tahoe Control Widgets to show up in their custom control widgets? Seems macOS is able to do it (see attached screenshot of the Bluetooth control widget), but my widget, which shows a title and subtitle on iOS, will only show the title on macOS. I tried all the different ControlWidgetButton init methods to no avail. I tried a VStack for my title and subtitle Texts, I tried just two Texts without a VStack, I tried the controlWidgetStatus and controlWidgetActionHint modifiers out of desperation... nothing worked. Any pointers much appreciated! Thank you, – Matthias

SwiftData with CloudKit in Widgets
Good morning everyone! Today I have a question about using SwiftData with CloudKit and Widgets. I recently set up my project for SwiftData and CloudKit synchronization, but for some reason, I’m not able to give my Widget access to this data. CloudKit works perfectly fine for my main app, but the Widget only shows placeholder data(the placeholder data which were defined in the get functions as catch, this is sure). I have set the CloudKit capability for my Widget extension and tried fetching data with the get-functions in the code below. I also ensured that the data model files are members of the Widget extension target and that the Widget extension uses the same CloudKit container as the main app. I wondered if it is possible and reasonable to save a copy of my CloudKit data in an App Group container, but in that case, the information shown in the Widget are not always up-to-date, so a solution that fetches data directly from CloudKit would be better. Has anyone had experience with this case? I couldn’t find much information about this problem online. In the code below, many parts have been deleted or altered because they are not relevant to the problem, as they don’t fetch data. The variables, functions, and data models in the code may sometimes have German names, but I hope you can still understand it. Thanks for your help! struct Provider: AppIntentTimelineProvider { //[Placeholder and snapshot] func timeline(for configuration: ConfigurationAppIntent, in context: Context) async -> Timeline<CleverEntry> { let entry = await loadAllVariables() return Timeline(entries: [entry], policy: .after(Date().addingTimeInterval(60 * 5))) } @MainActor private func getExam() -> [PruefungM] { //Old, local version /* guard let modelContainer = try? Can I use .glassEffect() in Widget?
I’m testing .glassEffect() in a widget on the latest iOS 26 beta, but it seems to have no effect at all — the blur isn’t visible, and in some cases even white text disappears completely. Is this the expected behavior for widgets (i.e. glass effect is not supported), or could this be a bug in the beta? Would appreciate any clarification or pointers. Thanks!

Rendering mode for emojis
I'm building a set of widgets that feature various emoji flags. However, when displayed in tinted mode, the emojis appear as solid white. Is there a way to control or override the rendering mode of emojis in this context? Any guidance would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

I'm working on the control widget which should display the SF image on the UI, but I have found that it cannot be displayed stably. I have eight CarCtrlWidgets which is about the type doorLock、chargeCover、frontBox、 locateCarLight、 locateCarHorn、 ventilate、 backBox and airCondition, it should all be showed but sometime they only show the text and placeholder. I'm aware of the images should be custom SF image and I can see them to show perfectly sometimes, but in other time it is just failed. This's really confused me, can anyone help me out? deviceversion 18.5;device model iPhone 16 pro;

Good morning everyone! Today I have a question about using SwiftData with CloudKit and Widgets. I recently set up my project for SwiftData and CloudKit synchronization, but for some reason, I’m not able to give my Widget access to this data. CloudKit works perfectly fine for my main app, but the Widget only shows placeholder data(the placeholder data which were defined in the get functions as catch, this is sure). I have set the CloudKit capability for my Widget extension and tried fetching data with the get-functions in the code below. I also ensured that the data model files are members of the Widget extension target and that the Widget extension uses the same CloudKit container as the main app. I wondered if it is possible and reasonable to save a copy of my CloudKit data in an App Group container, but in that case, the information shown in the Widget are not always up-to-date, so a solution that fetches data directly from CloudKit would be better. Has anyone had experience with this case? I couldn’t find much information about this problem online. In the code below, many parts have been deleted or altered because they are not relevant to the problem, as they don’t fetch data. The variables, functions, and data models in the code may sometimes have German names, but I hope you can still understand it. Thanks for your help! struct Provider: AppIntentTimelineProvider { //[Placeholder and snapshot] func timeline(for configuration: ConfigurationAppIntent, in context: Context) async -> Timeline<CleverEntry> { let entry = await loadAllVariables() return Timeline(entries: [entry], policy: .after(Date().addingTimeInterval(60 * 5))) } @MainActor private func getExam() -> [PruefungM] { //Old, local version /* guard let modelContainer = try? ModelContainer(for: PruefungM.self) else { return [] } let descriptor = FetchDescriptor<PruefungM>() let PRF = try? modelContainer.mainContext.fetch(descriptor) return PRF ?? [] */ do { let configuration = ModelConfiguration(cloudKitDatabase: .private("iCloud.my_bundle_id")) let container = try ModelContainer( for: PruefungM.self, configurations: configuration ) let descriptor = FetchDescriptor<PruefungM>() return try container.mainContext.fetch(descriptor) } catch { print("❌ Error(CloudKit): \(error)") return [] } } @MainActor private func getHAF() -> [HausaufgabeM] { do { let configuration = ModelConfiguration(cloudKitDatabase: .private("iCloud.my_bundle_id")) let container = try ModelContainer( for: HausaufgabeM.self, configurations: configuration ) let descriptor = FetchDescriptor<HausaufgabeM>() return try container.mainContext.fetch(descriptor) } catch { print("❌ Error (CloudKit): \(error)") return [] } } @MainActor private func loadAllVariables() -> CleverEntry { print("Function started") let HAF = getHAF() let PRF = getExam() //handling and returning the data } }
