Live Activity - Firebase Cloud Messaging, APNs iOS 18+
Hello, We are using the Firebase Admin SDK (firebase-admin framework) to send push notifications via Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) for Live Activity updates in our iOS app. With the introduction of iOS 18, a new key "input-push-token": 1 has been added to the Live Activities push payload structure. 1) Can this new key ("input-push-token": 1) be used when sending payloads via FCM? We noticed that FCM is still using the push update format introduced in iOS 17.2. Will FCM be updated to support the new push structure introduced with iOS 18? Or is the "input-push-token" feature only available when sending notifications via direct APNs? 2) We are concerned about the expiration of the Live Activity start push token. If a user doesn't open the app for a long time, the token may expire, and this could result in failed updates. That’s why we are looking into the new "input-push-token" behavior in iOS 18. Do you have any recommendations on how to manage or prevent token expiration? Is there any official guidance on the lifespan of the Live Activity push tokens? Will FCM support the delivery of start/update/end Live Activity actions even when the app is completely terminated? We would highly appreciate any official clarification or roadmap regarding this. It would help us determine whether we should wait for FCM support or switch to sending notifications directly via APNs. Thank you for your help!

Calendar "Today's Events" Issue
Device: iPhone 16 Pro iOS version: 18.3.2 The calendar widget (on home screen) is displaying "No more events today" even though there is an appointment scheduled later in the evening on the same day. I have looked through all the settings and nothing seems to work. How do I get it to display events that are on the calendar for rest of the day today. It does correctly display events that are upcoming tomorrow and next week. Thanks, -Harry

WidgetKit And Picture rotation
I'm developing a widget with WidgetKit, and I'm having a problem: I need to click on an image, and when I click it triggers a network request, the image automatically rotates clockwise, and when the network ends, the image automatically stops rotating. How to do that? My current idea is to click on the image and await the call to the network request. Should Toggle be used for the control corresponding to the picture? Because Toggle has two states. Then there is how to do image rotation, did not find support API.

Home screen Widget with dynamic options for configuration via App Intent - Slow
I am building a widget with configurable options (dynamic option) where the options are pull from api (ultimately the options are return from a server, but during my development, the response is constructed on the fly from locally). Right now, I am able to display the widget and able to pull out the widget configuration screen where I can choose my config option . I am constantly having an issue where the loading the available options when selected a particular option (e.g. Category) and display them on the UI. Sometime, when I tap on the option "Category" and the loading indicator keeps spinning for while before it can populate the list of topics (return from methods in NewsCategoryQuery struct via fetchCategoriesFromAPI ). Notice that I already made my fetchCategoriesFromAPI call to return the result on the fly and however the widget configuration UI stills take a very long time to display the result. Even worst, the loading (loading indicator keep spinning) sometime will just kill itself after a while and my guess there are some time threshold where the widget extension or app intent is allow to run, not sure on this? My questions: How can I improve the loading time to populate the dynamic options in widget configuration via App Intent Here is my sample code for my current setup struct NewsFeedConfigurationIntent: AppIntent, WidgetConfigurationIntent { static let title: LocalizedStringResource = "Configure News Topic Options" static let description = IntentDescription("Select a topic for your news.") @Parameter(title: "Category", default: nil) var category: NewsCategory? } struct NewsCategory: AppEntity, Identifiable { let id: String let code: String let name: String static let typeDisplayRepresentation: TypeDisplayRepresentation = "News Topic" static let defaultQuery = NewsCategoryQuery() var displayRepresentation: DisplayRepresentation { DisplayRepresentation(title: LocalizedStringResource(stringLiteral: name)) } } struct NewsCategoryQuery: EntityQuery { func entities(for identifiers: [NewsCategory.ID]) async throws -> [NewsCategory] { let categories = fetchCategoriesFromAPI() return categories.filter { identifiers.contains($0.id) } } func suggestedEntities() async throws -> [NewsCategory] { fetchCategoriesFromAPI() } } func fetchCategoriesFromAPI() -> [NewsCategory] { let list = [ "TopicA", "TopicB", "TopicC", ....... ] return list.map { item in NewsCategory(id: item, code: item, name: item.capitalized) } }

iOS 18.4 - HomeKit actions from AppIntent fail when triggered from Widget
Hi all, Since updating to iOS 18.4, I'm experiencing a regression with AppIntents triggered from Widgets. In my app, I use AppIntents inside a WidgetKit extension to control HomeKit devices. This setup was working perfectly up to iOS 18.3. However, starting with iOS 18.4, when the AppIntent is triggered from the widget and the main app is not running, the action fails with this error: Error Domain=HMErrorDomain Code=80 "Missing entitlement for API." UserInfo={ NSLocalizedFailureReason=Handler does not support background access, NSLocalizedDescription=Missing entitlement for API. } Interestingly, the exact same AppIntent works fine if the app is still alive in the background — it seems like the failure only occurs when the intent is handled by the widget process. This looks like a behavior change or new restriction introduced in iOS 18.4. Has anyone experienced the same? Is there a new entitlement needed, or a recommended workaround? Thanks in advance!

Can't load widget with a particular bundle id on Catalyst
Please note that the widgets sub forum is a 404: https://developer.apple.com/forums/post/question?community=1394020 I have a widget that works on iOS but doesn't work on Catalyst. The widget does not appear in the list of available widgets to install. It's related to the Bundle ID for the widget. If I use a fresh bundle ID the widget loads, but if I use the one I'm currently using for iOS it doesn't appear as available to install. To confirm it's related to the bundle ID I created a fresh project in xcode and recreated the behaviour. Any help greatly appreciated.

i finally got previews for dynamic island to work and I'm just trying to first work on adding a static UI elements to my dynamic island like i did for my live screen live activity, but my dynamic island view is showing up totally empty, if i add my app icon image to the compact leading closure, it doesn't appear, if i ad text to an expanded region closure it doesn't appear. am really stuck on this and would approeciate the help. var body: some View { Image("dynamicrep") .resizable() .scaledToFit() .clipShape(.circle) } } struct DynamicRepLiveActivity: Widget { var body: some WidgetConfiguration { ActivityConfiguration(for: DynamicRepAttributes.self) { context in VStack { HStack(spacing: 257) { Text("from \(context.attributes.titleName ?? [S:1] Error received: Connection invalidated on empty project
Hello everyone, I'm encountering a persistent issue with my newly created widget project, even though it’s a clean, minimal setup. Every time I try to run the widget on the simulator or a device, I get the following error message: [S:1] Error received: Connection invalidated. I get this error even in a new project (I just created a new one) when I add a widget extension to it. The app itself works fine—no errors—but when I try to install the widget extension, it always shows me this error. Initially, I thought the issue was caused by an incorrect URLSession, but even after creating a clean (default) widget extension, the issue persists. I don’t know what to think anymore. Has anyone encountered this before? It’s completely blocking my progress. Conditions - new project from iOS App template WidgetExtension from template with no changes Iphone 14 pro IOS - 18.3.2

Sync an interactive widget's Core Data store with the main app (and iCloud)
Hi everyone! I have an app on the App Store that uses Core Data as its data store. (It's called Count on Me: Tally Counter. Feel free to check it out.) One of the app's core feature is an interactive widget with a simple button. When the button is tapped, it's supposed to update the entity in the store. My requirement is that the changes are then reflected with minimal latency in the main app and – ideally – also on other devices of the same iCloud user. And vice-versa: When an entity is updated in the app (or on another device where the same iCloud user is logged in), the widget that shows this entity should also refresh to reflect the changes. I have read multiple articles, downloaded sample projects, searched Stackoverflow and the Apple developer forums, and tried to squeeze a solution out of AI, but couldn't figure out how to make this work reliably. So I tried to reduce the core problem to a minimal example project. It has two issues that I cannot resolve: When I update an entity in the app, the widget is immediately updated as intended (due to a call to WidgetCenter's reloadAllTimelines method). However, when I update the same entity from the interactive widget using the same app intent, the changes are not reflected in the main app. For the widget and the app to use the same local data store, I need to enable App Groups in both targets and set a custom location for the store within the shared app group. So I specify a custom URL for the NSPersistentStoreDescription when setting up the Core Data stack. The moment I do this, iCloud sync breaks. Issue no. 1 is far more important to me as I haven't officially enabled iCloud sync yet in my real app that's already on the App Store. But it would be wonderful to resolve issue no. 2 as well. Surely, there must be a way to synchronize changes to the source of truth triggered by interactive widget with other devices of the same iCloud user. Otherwise, the feature to talk to the main app and the feature to synchronize with iCloud would be mutually exclusive. Some other developers I talked to have suggested that the widget should only communicate proposed changes to the main app and once the main app is opened, it processes these changes and writes them to the NSPersistentCloudKitContainer which then synchronizes across devices. This is not an option for me as it would result in a stale state and potential data conflicts with different devices. For example, when a user has the same widget on their iPhone and their iPad, taps a button on the iPhone widget, that change would not be reflected on the iPad widget until the user decides to open the app on the iPhone. At the same time, the user could tap the button multiple times on their iPad widget, resulting in a conflicting state on both devices. Thus, this approach is not a viable solution. An answer to this question will be greatly appreciated. The whole code including the setup of the Core Data stack is included in the repository reference above. Thank you!

Live Activity Update Not Working Consistently in the Background
Hi everyone, I’m working on implementing Live Activities in my app, and I’ve encountered an issue where the Live Activity updates work intermittently when the app is in the background. Sometimes they update correctly, but at other times, they don’t update at all, even though they should be running in the background. However, when the app is brought to the foreground, the updates happen correctly. A few things I’ve checked: The app is using ActivityKit to update the Live Activity with Activity.update(). I’ve enabled the necessary background modes in the Capabilities section. Is there a possibility that I’m hitting the system budget limit while experiencing this issue? If this is a limitation, how can I avoid it or manage this situation? Has anyone else faced this issue? Any advice or potential solutions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

AppIntent perform method not called.
We have a widget bundle with multiple widgets. I'm adding a widget that is interactive (iOS 17 and higher). Our widget code is in a static library that gets linked into the widget extension target in our main app Xcode project. I have SwiftUI buttons constructed with the intent constructor in our UI See https://developer.apple.com/documentation/swiftui/button/init(intent:label:) When I press the button the timeline refreshes (conforming to TimelineProvider) but the perform method doesn't seem to be called. I've seen multiple pieces of advice and none of them seem to work. I've tried on a physical device and a simulator. I've tried adding an AppIntentsPackage. I've tried including the AppIntent code in the app and the widget. I've tried setting the openAppWhenRun to true and false and not setting it at all. I've tried simplifying the intent to just printing out a line to the console and returning a result. At this point I have no idea how to debug this and I don't know what else to try. I appreciate any helpful advice at this point.

Control Widget SF image cannot stably display
I'm working on the control widget which should display the SF image on the UI, but I have found that it cannot be displayed stably. I have three ExampleControlWidget which is about the type egA egB and egC, it should all be showed but now they only show the text and placeholder. I'm aware of the images should be SF image and I can see them to show perfectly sometimes, but in other time it is just failed. This's really confused me, can anyone help me out? public enum ControlWidgetType: Sendable { case egA case egB case egC public var imageName: String { switch self { case .egA: return "egA" case .egB: return "egB" case .egC: return "egC" } } } struct ExampleControlWidget: ControlWidget { var body: some ControlWidgetConfiguration { AppIntentControlConfiguration( kind: kind, provider: Provider() ) { example in ControlWidgetToggle( example.name, isOn: example.state.isOn, action: ExampleControlWidgetIntent(id: example.id), valueLabel: { isOn in ExampleControlWidgetView( statusText: isOn ? Localization.on.text : Localization.off.text, bundle: bundle, widgetType: .egA //or .egB .egC ) .symbolEffect(.pulse) } ) .disabled(example.state.isDisabled) } .promptsForUserConfiguration() } } public struct ExampleControlWidgetView: View { private let statusText: String private let bundle: Bundle private var widgetType: ControlWidgetType = .egA public init(statusText: String, bundle: Bundle, widgetType: ControlWidgetType) { self.statusText = statusText self.bundle = bundle self.widgetType = widgetType } public var body: some View { Label( statusText, image: .init( name: widgetType.imageName, // the SF Symbol image id bundled in the Widget extension bundle: bundle ) ) } } This is the normal display: These are the display that do not show properly: The results has no rules at all, I have tried to completely uninstall the APP and reinstall but the result is same.

Custom Intent ParameterSummary based on Widget Kind/ID
I'm trying to create two widgets, widget A and B. Currently A and B are very similar so they share the same Intent and Intent Timeline Provider. I use the Intent Configuration interface to set a parameter, in this example lets say its the background tint. On one of the widgets, widget A, I want to also set another String enum parameter (for a timescale), but I don't want this option to be there for widget B as it's not relevant. I'm aware of some of the options for configuring the ParameterSummary, but none that let me pass in or inject the "kind" string (or widget ID) of the widget that's being modified. I'll try to provide some code for examples. My Widget Definition (targeting >= iOS 17) struct WidgetA: Widget { // I'd like to access this parameter within the intent let kind: String = "WidgetA" var body: some WidgetConfiguration { AppIntentConfiguration(kind: kind, intent: WidgetIntent.self, provider: IntentTimelineProvider()) { entry in WidgetView(data: entry) } .configurationDisplayName("Widget A") .description("A widget.") .supportedFamilies([.systemMedium, .systemLarge]) } } struct WidgetB: Widget { let kind: String = "WidgetB" var body: some WidgetConfiguration { AppIntentConfiguration(kind: kind, intent: WidgetIntent.self, provider: IntentTimelineProvider()) { entry in WidgetView(data: entry) } .configurationDisplayName("Widget B") .description("B widget.") .supportedFamilies([.systemMedium, .systemLarge]) } } struct IntentTimelineProvider: AppIntentTimelineProvider { typealias Entry = WidgetIntentTimelineEntry typealias Intent = WidgetIntent ........ } struct WidgetIntent: AppIntent, WidgetConfigurationIntent { // This intent allows configuration of the widget background // This intent also allows for the widget to display interactive buttons for changing the Trend Type static var title: LocalizedStringResource = "Widget Configuration" static var description = IntentDescription("Description.") static var isDiscoverable: Bool { return false} init() {} init(trend:String) { self.trend = trend } // Used for implementing interactive Widget func perform() async throws -> some IntentResult { print("WidgetIntent perform \(trend)") #if os(iOS) WidgetState.setState(type: trend) #endif return .result() } @Parameter(title: "Trend Type", default: "Trend") var trend:String // I only want to show this parameter for Widget A and not Widget B @Parameter(title: "Trend Timescale", default: .week) var timescale: TimescaleTypeAppEnum? @Parameter(title: "Background Tint", default: BackgroundTintTypeAppEnum.none) var backgroundTint: BackgroundTintTypeAppEnum? static var parameterSummary: some ParameterSummary { // Summary("Test Info") { // \.$timescale // \.$backgroundTint // } // An example of a configurable widget parameter summary, but not based of kind/ID string When(\.$backgroundTint, .equalTo, BackgroundTintTypeAppEnum.none) { Summary("Test Info") { \.$timescale \.$backgroundTint } } otherwise : { Summary("Test Info") { \.$backgroundTint } } } } enum TimescaleTypeAppEnum: String, AppEnum { case week case fortnight static var typeDisplayRepresentation = TypeDisplayRepresentation(name: "Trend Timescale") static var caseDisplayRepresentations: [Self: DisplayRepresentation] = [ .week: "Past Week", .fortnight: "Past Fortnight" ] } enum BackgroundTintTypeAppEnum: String, AppEnum { case blue case none static var typeDisplayRepresentation = TypeDisplayRepresentation(name: "Background Tint") static var caseDisplayRepresentations: [Self: DisplayRepresentation] = [ .none: "None (Default)", .blue: "Blue" ] } I know I could achieve what I'm after by having a separate Intent and separate IntentTimelineProvider for each widget. But this all seems unnessecary for just a simple optional parameter based on what widget its configuring.... unless I'm missing the point about Intents, Widgets or something! I've done a fair bit of other searching but can't find an answer to this overall scenario. Many thanks for any help.

Can I tell when my iOS Widget is running on MacOS (when Use IPhone Widgets is on)
I have an iOS Widget that also can load on the Mac when the Use iPhone Widgets setting is turned on on the Mac in Desktop & Dock. I want to use a different url scheme to open video clips from the widget if it is being clicked on iOS or the Mac. I tried using ProcessInfo.processInfo.isiOSAppOnMac but it always thinks it is on iOS. I also tried looking for the user document path to see if it was /var/mobile/ or /Users/. but it always thinks it is /var/mobile. I assume this is as it is not really a catalyst app but a WidgetKit extension from the phone. Is there anyway I can figure out when the widget is running on the mac? Thanks!

iOS did not update all widgets of an app when the user press a button on a widget
Hello, I have an app in AppStore "Counter Widget". https://apps.apple.com/app/id1522170621 It allows you to add a widget to your homescreen/lockscreen to count anything. Everything works fine except for one scenario. iOS 18+ I create 2 or more widgets for one counter. For example, medium and small widgets. I click on the widget button to increase or decrease the value. The button in the widget uses Button(intent: AppIntent) to update the value and calls WidgetCenter.shared.reloadAllTimelines() to update the second widget for the same counter. For iOS 18 in this particular scenario, you don't even have to call the WidgetCenter.shared.reloadAllTimelines(). iOS already knows that there is a widget with the same INIntent settings and will update it itself. Both widgets are updated and show the new value. Everything is correct. Now on the homescreen I open the widget configuration for one of the widgets to change the INIntent for the widget. For example, i change the background to wallpaper. This is just a skin for the widget, and the widget is associated with the same counter value as before. As in (2), I click the widget button to increase or decrease the value. But now only one widget is updated. iOS ignores my call to WidgetCenter.shared.reloadAllTimelines() and does not update the second widget connected to the same counter. As I found, iOS, when I call WidgetCenter.shared.reloadAllTimelines() from the widget itself, updates other widgets only if INIntent is absolutely equal for them. Overriding isEqual for them did not help. That is, I cannot specify which fields from my INIntent can be ignored during such an update and consider that widgets are equal and need to be updated. Obviously iOS make this compare outside my code. The main problem is that when the user adds a widget to the lock screen and increases and decreases the value there. After that, he opens the home screen and the widget there is not synchronized with the value from the widget on the lock screen. How to solve this problem?

Adding a custom widget to the Capture group in Control Center
I noticed that with iOS 18, when adding a widget to the Control Center, there is now some "grouping system". I'm interested in the Capture group, which contains native widgets from Apple as well as third party apps like Instagram and Blackmagic cam, widgets in this group open the camera. My widget also opens the camera in my app, how can I add it to this group?

i finally got previews for dynamic island to work and I'm just trying to first work on adding a static UI elements to my dynamic island like i did for my live screen live activity, but my dynamic island view is showing up totally empty, if i add my app icon image to the compact leading closure, it doesn't appear, if i ad text to an expanded region closure it doesn't appear. am really stuck on this and would approeciate the help. var body: some View { Image("dynamicrep") .resizable() .scaledToFit() .clipShape(.circle) } } struct DynamicRepLiveActivity: Widget { var body: some WidgetConfiguration { ActivityConfiguration(for: DynamicRepAttributes.self) { context in VStack { HStack(spacing: 257) { Text("from \(context.attributes.titleName ?? "no title")") .fontWeight(.light) .font(.system(size: 16)) .foregroundStyle(Color.gray) Circle() .frame(width: 53, height: 50) .foregroundStyle(Color.gray).opacity(0.23) .overlay { Image("mmicon") } } .frame(maxWidth: 500, maxHeight: 210) Spacer() Text("\(context.attributes.contentBody ?? "no content")") } .activityBackgroundTint(Color.cyan) .activitySystemActionForegroundColor(Color.black) .frame(width: 500, height: 300) } dynamicIsland: { context in DynamicIsland { // Expanded UI goes here. Compose the expanded UI through // various regions, like leading/trailing/center/bottom DynamicIslandExpandedRegion(.leading) { Text("from \(context.attributes.titleName ?? "no title")") } DynamicIslandExpandedRegion(.trailing) { Circle() } DynamicIslandExpandedRegion(.bottom) { Text("\(context.attributes.contentBody ?? "no content")") } } compactLeading: { AppLogo() } compactTrailing: { Text("") //empty for now } minimal: { Text("hello") //empty for now } .widgetURL(URL(string: "MuscleMemory.KimchiLabs.com")) .keylineTint(Color.white) } } }
