A Summary of the WWDC25 Group Lab - Developer Tools
At WWDC25 we launched a new type of Lab event for the developer community - Group Labs. A Group Lab is a panel Q&A designed for a large audience of developers. Group Labs are a unique opportunity for the community to submit questions directly to a panel of Apple engineers and designers. Here are the highlights from the WWDC25 Group Lab for Developer Tools. Will my project codebase be used for training when I use Xcode's intelligent assistant powered by cloud-based models? When using ChatGPT without logging in, your data will not be used to improve any models. If you log in to a ChatGPT account, this is based on your ChatGPT account settings, which allows you to opt-out (it defaults to on). When using Xcode with accounts for other model providers, you should check with the policies of your provider. And finally, at no point will any portion of your codebase be used to train or improve any Apple models. We'd love to make our SwiftUI Previews (and soon, Playgrounds) as snappy as possible. Is there any way to skip certain build steps, such as running linters? It seems the build environment is exactly the same (compared to a debug build), but maybe there's a trick. Starting with Xcode 16, SwiftUI previews use the exact same build artifacts as the regular build. The new Playgrounds support in Xcode 26 uses these build artifacts too. Shell script build phases are the most common thing that introduces extra build time, so as a first step, try turning off all shell script build phases (like linters) to get an idea if that’s the issue. If those build phases add significant time to your build, consider moving some of those phases into asynchronous steps, such as running linters before committing instead of on every build. If you do need a shell script build phase to run during your build, make sure to explicitly define the input and output files, as that is a huge way to improve your build performance. Are we able to provide additional context for the models, like coding standards? Documentation for third party dependencies? Documentation on your own codebase that explains things like architecture and more? In general, Xcode will automatically search for the right context based on the question and the evolving answer, as the model can interact multiple times with your project as it develops an answer. This will automatically pick up the coding style of the code it sees, and can include files that contain architecture comments, etc. Beyond automatic context, you can manually attach other documents, even if they aren't in your project. For example, you could make a file with rules and ideas and attach it, and it will influence the response. We are very aware of other kinds of automatic context like rule files, etc, though Xcode does not support these at this time. Once ChatGPT is enabled for Coding Intelligence in Xcode 26, and I sign into my existing ChatGPT account, will the ChatGPT Coding Intelligence model in Xcode know about chat conversations on Xcode development done previously in the ChatGPT Mac app? Xcode does not use information from other conversations, and conversations started in Xcode are not accessible in the web UI or ChatGPT app. Is there a plan to make SwiftUI views easier to locate and understand in the view hierarchy like UIKit views? SwiftUI uses a declarative paradigm to define your user interface. That allows you to specify what you want, with the system translating that into an efficient representation at runtime. Unlike traditional AppKit and UIKit, seeing the runtime representation of SwiftUI views isn't sufficient in order to understand why it's not doing what you want. This year, we introduced a SwiftUI Instrument that shows why things are happening, like view re-rendering. Is it possible to use the AI chat with ChatGPT Enterprise? My company doesn't allow us to use the general ChatGPT, only the enterprise version they have setup that prevents data from being leaked Yes, Xcode 26 supports logging into any existing ChatGPT account, including enterprise accounts. If that does not meet your needs, you can also setup a local server that implements the popular chat completions REST API to talk to your enterprise account how you need. Now that Icon Composer is here, how does it complement or replace existing vector design tools such as Sketch for icon design? Icon Composer complements your existing vector design tools. You should continue to create your shapes, gradients, and layers in another tool like Sketch, and compose the exported SVG layers in Icon Composer. Once you bring your layers into Icon Composer, you can then use it to influence the translucency, blur, and specular highlights for your icon. What’s one feature or improvement in the new Xcode that you personally think developers will love, but might not immediately discover? Maybe something tucked away or quietly powerful that’s flown under the radar so far? One feature we're particularly excited about is the new power profiler for iOS, which gives you further insights into the energy consumption of your app beyond what was possible with the energy instrument previously. You can learn more about how to use this instrument and how it can help you greatly reduce your apps battery usage in the documentation, as well as the session Profile and optimize power usage in your app. There were also improvements in accessibility this year with Voice Control, where you can naturally speak your Swift code to Xcode, and it understands the Swift syntax as you speak. To see it in action, take a look at the demonstration in What’s new in Xcode 26. We have a software advisory council that is very sensitive to having our private information going to the cloud in any form. What information do you have to help me guide Xcode and Apple Intelligence through the acceptance process? One thing you can do is configure a proxy for your enterprise that implementing the popular Chat Completions API endpoint protocol. When using a model provider via URL, you can use your proxy endpoint to inspect the network traffic for anything that you do not want sent outside of your enterprise, and then forward the traffic through the proxy to your chosen model provider. Are there list of recommended LLMs to use with Xcode via Intelligence/Local? I've tried Gemma3-12B, but.. I hope there are better options? Apple doesn't have a published list of recommended local models. This is a fast-moving space, and so a recommendation would become out of date very quickly as new models are released. We encourage you to try out the local model support in Xcode 26 with models that you find meet your needs, and let us and the community know! (continued below)

Upload Symbols Failed on Xcode 16
I am using GoogleMobileAds package dependencies and now when I want to archive and export an app I get this two warnings : Upload Symbols Failed The archive did not include a dSYM for the GoogleMobileAds.framework with the UUIDs [13B55A37-D103-36E1-8D7B-FA4EAB2C8146]. Ensure that the archive's dSYM folder includes a DWARF file for GoogleMobileAds.framework with the expected UUIDs. Upload Symbols Failed The archive did not include a dSYM for the UserMessagingPlatform.framework with the UUIDs [A3941120-02A1-30B5-8C28-BFC0F9496E16]. Ensure that the archive's dSYM folder includes a DWARF file for UserMessagingPlatform.framework with the expected UUIDs. I have updated the packages to 11.9.0 (lasted) and Xcode 16 to 16 RC (lasted also) and I would like to know how to fix this... With Xcode 15 I have no problem !! I can export with no warnings ! But now with Xcode 16 no... Thanks for helping !

Provisioning problem
Totally noob programmer here, forgive me if this is a basic user error. But there seems to be a mismatch between my apple id identifier and my team identifier. It has been automatically configured, and worked until today, but while trying to run a new app on my iphone i all of a sudden got "Failed to install embedded profile for com.kylland.formattingtest : 0xe800801a (This provisioning profile does not have a valid signature (or it has a valid, but untrusted signature).)". Now it does not work on any apps. Went through what chatgpt had to give me, trying to log in and out, made sure automatic signing is enabled and tried to delete the key from keychain. Still comes up with two different keys.

Hi, i have met error below when i tried to po one attributes of an instance in my Xcode lldb: error: type for self cannot be reconstructed: type for typename "$xxxxx" was not found (cached) error: Couldn't realize Swift AST type of self. Hint: using `v` to directly inspect variables and fields may still work. Is there anybody met the same error before? I urgently want to know why this happen and how to fix this issue. My macOS Version is Sequoia v15.0.1, Xcode16.0. This problem showed after i upgraded my macOS and Xcode version.

Video not working on 16.4 simulator
I'm testing a video stream (HLS) with AVPlayer. On XCode 14.3 and simulators running iOS 16.4, there is no video image, only black screen. The audio is playing normally, also progress/duration of the video is showing as expected. The problem does not occur on same XCode version with earlier versions of the simulator. Is this a simulator bug? I've also tested it on real device with iOS 16.4 - no problem there.

Breakpoint issue: 'self cannot be reconstructed'
Hello! We're working on a large app with over 400 modules in both Swift and Objective-C, totaling more than 3 million lines of code. Since the release of Xcode 15 and 16 this summer, we’ve been experiencing issues with LLDB that have made debugging practically impossible. Here are some of the problems we’re facing: The first breakpoint takes a very long time to hit. When using 'po self', we encounter the following error: error: type for self cannot be reconstructed: type for typename "$s5MyModule10PlayerViewCD" was not found (cached) error: Couldn't realize Swift AST type of self. Hint: using `v` to directly inspect variables and fields may still work. We get numerous log messages like this: Debugging will be degraded due to missing types. Rebuilding the project will regenerate the needed module files.warning: (arm64) /Users/egormerkushev/Library/Developer/Xcode/DerivedData/App-enhtbwiyebmjsffoqkqhhpshsfia/Build/Products/Debug-iphoneos/MyModule.framework/MyModule(UploadConfiguration.o) 0x000000000000079d: unable to locate module needed for external types: /Users/builder/Library/Developer/Xcode/DerivedData/ModuleCache.noindex/169D1N0MIKBUI/Security-3BRN4UPIIGHME.pcm error: '/Users/builder/Library/Developer/Xcode/DerivedData/ModuleCache.noindex/169D1N0MIKBUI/Security-3BRN4UPIIGHME.pcm' does not exist In the Derived Data folder, we find files with hash-like names, such as: Security-3JM2E93YFDLZNYHWPPIMWNENB.d Security-3JM2E93YFDLZNYHWPPIMWNENB.dia Security-3JM2E93YFDLZNYHWPPIMWNENB.pcm Security-3JM2E93YFDLZNYHWPPIMWNENB.scan Security-3NAAT3MGN7XY96KVJW529HR41.d Security-3NAAT3MGN7XY96KVJW529HR41.dia Security-3NAAT3MGN7XY96KVJW529HR41.pcm Security-3NAAT3MGN7XY96KVJW529HR41.scan Security-3RJH8STJC01N1KKN7JCY1WK7F.d Security-3RJH8STJC01N1KKN7JCY1WK7F.dia Security-3RJH8STJC01N1KKN7JCY1WK7F.pcm Security-3RJH8STJC01N1KKN7JCY1WK7F.scan Security-3TILE9XTY0B8UV9VYL7Y0MJN.d Security-3TILE9XTY0B8UV9VYL7Y0MJN.dia Security-3TILE9XTY0B8UV9VYL7Y0MJN.pcm Security-3TILE9XTY0B8UV9VYL7Y0MJN.scan Security-3ZE8O6ZPHE4L52UZGL0PCBA59.d Security-3ZE8O6ZPHE4L52UZGL0PCBA59.dia ... empty dSYM file detected - Xcode 16
Hi, I recently updated to Xcode 16. Since then I successfully built my app and sent an update to the App Store. But suddenly, after an exception I've experienced while working on my code, the app is crashing on launch, without showing the stack trace, and showing only one warning in the console: warning: (arm64) /Users/myuser/Library/Developer/Xcode/DerivedData/myapp-bglvscamatwthwbfqmtzmbvxeewc/Build/Products/Debug-iphonesimulator/myapp.app/MyApp empty dSYM file detected, dSYM was created with an executable with no debug info. Tried deleting derived data Erasing all simulator data Reseting my computer No change yet. Any idea what am I missing? Thank you..

Xcode 16 warning about missing symbols of static framework
I work on an SDK, and one of the ways we distribute it is as a pre-compiled static XCFramework. As far as I know, it’s the nature of a static framework to not contain symbols since the framework will be embedded in the final app binary, and the symbols should then be generated. However, when testing the "Validate" function of the Xcode 16 deployment process, our users are receiving a warning that says the framework does not contain symbols. Is my assumption about static frameworks and symbols incorrect? Could this be a bug in Xcode 16? Should we modify something in our framework to inform Xcode that symbols are not needed?

Xcode 13 "Missing package product" using local Swift Packages
I have a project I've been working off of for a few years now that makes use of local Swift Packages. In my workspace, I have a "Kit" project that generates a framework using several local Swift Packages as dependencies. In Xcode 12, the local Swift packages resolve correctly and compiles, but each beta of Xcode 13 gives me the error: "[ProjectName].xcodeproj Missing package product '[LocalSwiftPackage]'" Clearing the package cache, derived data, or restarting the application does not resolve the issue. Only Swift Packages that are remotely loaded from a URL are compiled correctly. Using local packages to separate module code, while still being able to edit in the same project, has been essential to my workflow and would hate to see Xcode 13 release with these breaking changes, and I have not seen this issue listed in the known issues for the Xcode 13 release notes. Has anyone else experienced this issue or found a workaround?

Xcode 15.3 crippled with "internal inconsistency error"
Since Xcode 15.3 it has become impossible to build our project more twice in a row without encountering a batch of "internal inconsistency error: never received target ended message for target ID …". This issues appeared a few months ago (15.0 i think, but i'm not sure), but xcode 15.3 makes it almost unusable. We're a team of 3 iOS devs, and we're all having the problem. Our project involves a lot of SPM packages, a few cocoa pods, a few iOS Frameworks, and a bit of swiftgen. Nothing particularly special for a large project, and no custom build steps that does anything fancy. It is now to the point where we're looking for alternative to xcode, because we can't decently kill xcode and restart every time we have to build our code...

Xcode 16 no longer sets ENABLE_PREVIEWS=YES for preview builds
Up until now, it was possible to check in build scripts via the ENABLE_PREVIEWS environment variable whether a build for a SwiftUI preview is being executed. In addition, it was also possible to conditionally compile code for SwiftUI or exclude it from compilation using this variable. This no longer works with Xcode 16 and the new SwiftUI Preview compilation! There is still the option to switch to the old system with the "Use Legacy Previews Execution" setting, but as stated in the release notes, this option will be removed at some point. Which brings us back to the old problem of not being able to exclude build scripts from preview builds and not being able to prevent certain code from being compiled / add special code for SwiftUI previews. This is a terrible situation, especially for more complex projects in which precisely the points mentioned are important for the build process. I seriously hope Apple provides us with another environment variable for SwiftUI preview builds that we can use.

Apple Watch cannot reconnect
None of my existing apps (both in-AppStore and in-development) nor even a brand new WatchOS app can be installed to my Apple Watch. While using Xcode to build and deploy to my Watch, I get this: ”Waiting to reconnect to Apple Watch Xcode will continue when the operation completes.” However, this dialog persists and never completes. I’m running all of the latest: MacOS 14 beta 4, Xcode 15 beta 5, Watch OS 10 beta 4, iOS 17 beta 4. I’ve tried resetting my Watch (with “Erase All” option) and restarting the Mac, the phone and the watch. Any help?
