Security Implications of fdesetup authrestart on FileVault-Enabled Macs
I'm looking for confirmation on the security aspects of fdesetup authrestart when used on a FileVault-enabled Mac. As I understand it, this command temporarily stores the decryption key in memory to allow the system to restart without requiring manual entry of the FileVault password. However, I have a few security-related concerns: Storage of the Decryption Key: Where exactly is the key stored during an authenticated restart? Is it protected within the Secure Enclave (for Apple Silicon Macs) or the T2 Security Chip on Intel Macs? Key Lifetime & Wiping: At what point is the decryption key erased from memory? Does it persist in any form after the system has fully rebooted? Protection Against Physical Attacks: If an attacker gains physical access to the machine before the restart completes, is there any possibility that they could extract the decryption key from memory? Cold Boot Attack Resistance: Is there any risk that advanced forensic techniques (such as freezing RAM to retain data) could be used to recover the decryption key after issuing an authenticated restart? Malware Resistance: Could a compromised system (e.g., root access by an attacker) intercept or misuse the decryption key before the restart? I understand that on Apple Silicon and T2-equipped Macs, FileVault keys are tied to hardware-based encryption, making unauthorized access difficult. However, I'd like to confirm whether Authenticated Restart introduces any new risks compared to a standard FileVault-enabled boot process.

Attesting Secure Enclave-Generated Keys in a WebAuthn Flow
Hello everyone, I'm working on a project where I intend to use Secure Enclave-based, device-bound private keys within a Webauthn flow. I have the following question: Is it possible to generate private keys in the Secure Enclave with integrated attestation in order to reliably prove to a relying party the authenticity and uncompromised state of the key? If so, I would appreciate details on the implementation—specifically, any prerequisites, limitations, or particular API calls and configuration options that need to be considered. I look forward to any advice, best practices, or pointers to further documentation on this topic. Thank you in advance for your support! Best regards, Alex

Passwords App is accessing websites from ASCredentialIdentityStore associated with 3rd Party password management app
The Passwords App is accessing websites found in the ASCredentialIdentityStore associated with a 3rd Party password management app (SamuraiSafe). This behaviour appears to be associated with looking up website favicons in order to display in Passwords. However the websites contacted are not stored in the Passwords App/iCloud KeyChain - only the 3rd Party password management app (SamuraiSafe). This is effectively leaking website information stored in the 3rd Party password management app. I first noticed this behaviour on macOS, and it appears to happen every 8 days. Today it was seen on iOS. The behaviour is revealed through the App Privacy Report on iOS (and LittleSnitch on macOS). I would not be surprised to see the Passwords App do this for websites saved in the Passwords App/iCloud KeyChain, however I believe it should not be arbitrarily testing every website found in the ASCredentialIdentityStore as reference to that website url should be entirely under the control of the end user. See attached screenshots from App Privacy Report. Filed bug with Apple: FB16682423

macOS PSSO extension development
Hey guys, I have recently started with developing an extension to support PSSO, I am at a very initial stage and trying out device registration. I am trying to fetch the registration token in my MDM profile but when running in debug mode I don't see the token , and also when I see the console log I see errors like error 14:44:00.465847+0530 AppSSODaemon Error Domain=com.apple.PlatformSSO Code=-1004 "no device configuration data to load" UserInfo={NSLocalizedDescription=no device configuration data to load} error 14:44:00.466434+0530 AppSSOAgent Error Domain=com.apple.PlatformSSO Code=-1004 "no device configuration" UserInfo={NSLocalizedDescription=no device configuration}, user default 14:44:00.466145+0530 AppSSODaemon -[PODaemonProcess deviceConfigurationForIdentifer:completion:] identifer = 96DBA2E4-6DB8-4937-85A8-69F7632B8717 on <private> error 14:44:00.466773+0530 SSO extension Error Domain=com.apple.PlatformSSO Code=-1001 "failed to retrieve SecKeyProxyEndpoint for key" UserInfo={NSLocalizedDescription=failed to retrieve SecKeyProxyEndpoint for key, NSUnderlyingError=0x14b608820 {Error Domain=com.apple.PlatformSSO Code=-1001 "Failed to receive key proxy endpoint." UserInfo={NSLocalizedDescription=Failed to receive key proxy endpoint.}}} I think due to some reason the PSSO process is not able to get the token from my configuration. And this is how my configuration profile looks like <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>PayloadContent</key> <array> <dict> <key>ExtensionIdentifier</key> <string>com.test.PSSO.SSO-extension</string> <key>PayloadDisplayName</key> <string>ingle Sign-On Extensions</string> <key>PayloadIdentifier</key> <string>com.apple.extensiblesso.96DBA2E4-6DB8-4937-85A8-69F7632B8717</string> <key>PayloadType</key> <string>com.apple.extensiblesso</string> <key>PayloadUUID</key> <string>CDC67F3E-0687-4796-95B0-A61EF6F3F9A7</string> <key>PayloadVersion</key> <integer>1</integer> <key>TeamIdentifier</key> <string>my_team_identifier</string> <key>Type</key> <string>Redirect</string> <key>RegistrationToken</key> <string>dummy_token_123</string> <key>PlatformSSO</key> <dict> <key>AuthenticationMethod</key> <string>Password</string> <key>EnableAuthorization</key> <true/> <key>EnableCreateUserAtLogin</key> <true/> <key>NewUserAuthorizationMode</key> <string>Standard</string> <key>UseSharedDeviceKeys</key> <true/> <key>UserAuthorizationMode</key> <string>Standard</string> </dict> <key>URLs</key> <array> <string>my_url</string> </array> </dict> </array> <key>PayloadDisplayName</key> <string>SSOE</string> <key>PayloadIdentifier</key> <string>com.test.psso.configuration</string> <key>PayloadScope</key> <string>System</string> <key>PayloadType</key> <string>Configuration</string> <key>PayloadUUID</key> <string>0DC6670F-F853-49CB-91B3-1C5ECB5D3F46</string> <key>PayloadVersion</key> <integer>1</integer> </dict> </plist>

FaceID changes in iOS 18
I currently do FaceID validation in my apps but it looks like Apple is offering FaceID ad the App level. Does this mean we still need to or can code for it in iOS 18 apps? Right now I've been working on migrating to iOS 18 using beta but my swift code just returns an "unknown error". From a developer perspective I can't find any examples or guidance on how handle FaceID currently in iOS 18 or going forward. Anyone have any insights or resources. This is the code that used to work but now under iOS 18 returns the error. Maybe the simulator and swift have not caught up but I don't think so given that it's been two beta release that I know of where this has not worked. class biometric { class func authenticateUser() async -> (Bool, Error?) { let context = LAContext() var error: NSError? if context.canEvaluatePolicy(.deviceOwnerAuthenticationWithBiometrics, error: &error) { let biometryType = context.biometryType var reason = "Authenticate with \(biometryType)" if biometryType == .faceID { reason = "Authenticate with Face ID" } else if biometryType == .touchID { reason = "Authenticate with Touch ID" } do { let success = try await context.evaluatePolicy(.deviceOwnerAuthenticationWithBiometrics, localizedReason: reason) LogEvent.print(module: "Authentication.biometric.authenticateUser", message: "Biometric authentication. success: \"\(success)\".") return (success, nil) } catch let evaluationError as LAError { LogEvent.print(module: "Authentication.biometric.authenticateUser", message: "Biometric authentication failed. evaluationError: \"\(evaluationError.localizedDescription)\"") handleEvaluationError(evaluationError) I do get past the .canEvaluatePolicy but fail on the .evaluatePolicy

prepareInterfaceToProvideCredential .oneTimeCode case is not called
Since release of 18.4. prepareInterfaceToProvideCredential .oneTimeCode case is not called and instead prepareInterfaceForUserChoosingTextToInsert() is called. That is the wrong delegate for this case and it causes confusion for the users. Also, some TOTP fields are recognised however, the key icon button is not presented above the keyboard next to TOTP suggestions. I've also tested 18.5 and it has the same issue. provideOneTimeCodeWithoutUserInteraction works just fine.

Xcode SwiftUI Preview "app" wants to access data from other app
I am writing SwiftData app, using a group container. When editing a SwiftUI file, every couple of seconds a dialog - that the app wants to access data from other apps - pops up. It is impossible to edit a view file while Canvas preview is open. If preview is resumed the dialog has to be confirmed twice. Each time the app is started from Xcode, the dialog has to be confirmed again. Any idea, how to stop these boring dialogs?

Application not getting identified after notarization
Hi folks We have a Developer ID Application which we create using electron. We made our last release for our Application on Nov'24 which was correctly working. Using the same code, we tried creating a notarized application again which started showing the following error while opening our Application. Monterey- M2- When we directly run the dmg on the dev machine, it does not give us the prompt. But if we download it from somewhere and run, the prompt comes up even in dev machine. We executed some commands to verify the notarization: 1- spctl --assess -vv /Applications/Refresh\ Pro.app On both dev machine and non-dev machine, the output was "accepted" /Applications/Refresh Pro.app: accepted source=Notarized Developer ID origin=Developer ID Application: Prograde Digital Incorporated (*******) 2- xcrun stapler validate /Applications/Refresh\ Pro.app On dev machine, we executed this command and the output is as follows. Processing: /Applications/Refresh Pro.app The validate action worked! 3- codesign -vvv --deep --strict /Applications/Refresh\ Pro.app/ /Applications/Refresh Pro.app: valid on disk /Applications/Refresh Pro.app: satisfies its Designated Requirement We have created a bug attaching the dmg. Please suggest anything we can try to make the release out the door. Bug link- https://feedbackassistant.apple.com/feedback/16811025

Unable to give permission to app I'm building to access devices on local network on Sequoia - no prompt given
I am developing apps using NWJS framework, which access devices on the local network. I am doing this on Sequoia on Macos (Desktop). I have developed other apps using NWJS before, but on earlier versions of Macos. My issue is, I am unable to give my app permission to app to access devices on local network on one of the apps. Some background: Other apps which I have used which access devices on the local network, on first-time launching, have given a prompt asking me if I want to allow or deny access to local device for the app. However, on first-time launching (and many others after that), It simply says the device cannot be reached, and I never get a prompt asking me if I want to allow or deny access to local device for my app. In its barebones proof-of-concept stage of my app, I have an iframe who's src attribute is the IP address of a device known on the network with that address. I have tried the protocol https://192.168.1.99 and http://192.168.1.99 in the src attribute. This protocol works in another app I have built where upon first-time launch, I was able to get a prompt and give it the needed permission. If I check in System Settings > Privacy and Security > Network, the app doesn't appear where I can toggle a setting. I also am unable to explicitly add my app to the list. ** This worked for one app, but not another: In researching this issue, it was recommended that I add the following keys in info.plist: com.apple.developer.networking.multicast - boolean true NSLocalNetworkUsageDescription - string description NSNearbyInteractionUsageDescription - string description This worked for one of my apps, but not another, which has a nearly identical structure. In fact, other than CFBundleIdentifier, CFBundleDisplayName and CFBundleName, info.plist is identical. Why did this work one time, and how can I get my app to prompt for permission for local network access?

Receiving Apple SignIn profile info again after deleting account
We are currently trying to fix a bug when using SignIn with Apple. It appears that on some occasions we are not receiving a user's profile info (name, email) when a new account is created. After doing some investigation we believe this bug is due to the same Apple login being used as an already deleted account. ASF only appears to send profile info the very first time an Apple login is used. If that account is deleted and another is created with the same apple login we won't receive the profile info. As a result we are not in compliance with Apple's guidelines requiring that we use the provided profile info with Apple SigIn, and need to prompt users to enter it again. Is there a process in place to properly "clear" a user after their account is deleted in our system, so that the next time a user creates an account with the same Apple login, we receive their profile info again?

AutoFill Unavailable - The developer needs to update it to work with this feature.
I have had a password autofill app extension in production for years. It still works fine. Except when the user taps a username or password textfield and selects "AutoFill" from the context menu. They are shown a modal error dialog, stating: "AutoFill Unavailable - The developer needs to update it to work with this feature." I cannot find any help on this issue. The AutoFill extension works fine when tapping the "Passwords" bar above the iOS keyboard. Any pointers would be appreciated.

Re-register device in Platform SSO
Hi, I'm currently in the middle of debugging between my macOS and server for implementing Platform SSO. As part of the debug process, I sometimes want to restart the whole process, which means to get into the beginDeviceRegisteration method again. I noticed that even if I push the Repair button in the user (under settings) it will go again and again into the beginUserRegistration, but it will not go again to the device registration. Is there an option to reset the Platform SSO device registration? (already tried Repair, remove MDM profile of the PSSO etc.)

iOS encryption cache file
I have read that iOS data protection ensures most of the files to be stored encrypted. However, I saw someone insisting (elcomsoft blog) very few files are not encrypted. Are app’s cache files or tmp files not stored encrypted? For example, are safari history.db file and cache files stored in the flash encrypted?

Issue with NSWorkspace openApplicationAtURL on Login Screen
When I tried to launch my application from non-gui process (from launch daemon) NSworkspace openApplicationAtURL failed if I tried to run it when my device on the login screen. Everything is working if someone logged in, but on the login screen I have the error The application “TestApp” could not be launched because a miscellaneous error occurred. with code 256 NSWorkspace* workspace = [NSWorkspace sharedWorkspace]; NSWorkspaceOpenConfiguration* config = [NSWorkspaceOpenConfiguration configuration]; config.createsNewApplicationInstance = YES; config.activates = NO; config.promptsUserIfNeeded = NO; config.addsToRecentItems = NO; [workspace openApplicationAtURL: appURL configuration: config completionHandler:^(NSRunningApplication *app, NSError *error) { }]; Sometimes after the third try it works, sometimes not at all. I try to use "open" command, it works on MacOS Sequoia, but not working for operating systems below, I see this error The application cannot be opened for an unexpected reason, error=Error Domain=RBSRequestErrorDomain Code=5 "Launch failed." UserInfo={NSLocalizedFailureReason=Launch failed., NSUnderlyingError=0x600002998120 {Error Domain=OSLaunchdErrorDomain Code=125 "Domain does not support specified action" UserInfo={NSLocalizedFailureReason=Domain does not support specified action}}} All these problems occur only on the login screen. I'm developing screen share utility, so I need somehow to launch my application on the login screen. Could someone please help me understand what is recommended way to launch application on the login screen?

Unwanted callback from Apple to our Pass Server
We have a Web server for Apple Pass and we received a complaint from a user because the Pass is being deleted every few days from the Apple Wallet App and the user had to reinstall the pass every time. Upon checking our server logs we found DELETE (unregister) requests that were not initiated by the user. Here are some (there are more) of those logs (I replaced some details with * for privacy): From July [29/Jul/2024:23:06:30 +0000] "DELETE /apple_wallet/v1/devices/****/registrations/pass.com..*/** HTTP/1.1" 200 31 "-" "passd/1.0 CFNetwork/1496.0.7 Darwin/23.5.0" From August [17/Aug/2024:22:51:33 +0000] "DELETE /apple_wallet/v1/devices/****/registrations/pass.com..*/** HTTP/1.1" 200 31 "-" "passd/1.0 CFNetwork/1498.700.2 Darwin/23.6.0" From September [08/Sep/2024:23:32:11 +0000] "DELETE /apple_wallet/v1/devices/****/registrations/pass.com...*/** HTTP/1.1" 200 31 "-" "passd/1.0 CFNetwork/1498.700.2 Darwin/23.6.0" Other information for this specific user/device: Phone 14 Pro Max - iOS 17.6 User has few other passes installed but none has disappeared only our issued pass. We are hoping to get some help from Apple to figure out why the DELETE request is being sent out to our server without being initiated by the user. I have already filed a ticket to Apple with Case-ID: 9315232 But I haven't gotten any feedback after a few weeks and some follow ups.

802.1X authentication using certificates in the data protection keychain
Can you please give me a hand with importing certificates under MacOS? I want to connect to Wi-Fi with 802.1X authentication (EAP-TLS) using a certificate that my homebrew application imported into my data protection keychain, but the imported certificate does not show up and I cannot select the certificate. It also does not show up in the Keychain Access app. One method I have tried is to import it into the data protection keychain by using the SecItemAdd function and setting kSecUseDataProtectionKeychain to true, but it does not work. Is there a better way to do this? ID: for id in identities { let identityParams: [String: Any] = [ kSecValueRef as String: id, kSecReturnPersistentRef as String: true, kSecUseDataProtectionKeychain as String: true ] let addIdentityStatus = SecItemAdd(identityParams as CFDictionary, nil) if addIdentityStatus == errSecSuccess { print("Successfully added the ID.: \(addIdentityStatus)") } else { print("Failed to add the ID.: \(addIdentityStatus)") } } Certificate: for cert in certificates { let certParams: [String: Any] = [ kSecValueRef as String: cert, kSecReturnPersistentRef as String: true, kSecUseDataProtectionKeychain as String: true ] let addCertStatus = SecItemAdd(certParams as CFDictionary, nil) if addCertStatus == errSecSuccess { print("Successfully added the certificate.: (\(addCertStatus))") } else { print("Failed to add the certificate.: (\(addCertStatus))") } } Private key: for privateKey in keys { let keyTag = UUID().uuidString.data(using: .utf8)! let keyParams: [String: Any] = [ kSecAttrApplicationTag as String: keyTag, kSecValueRef as String: privateKey, kSecReturnPersistentRef as String: true, kSecUseDataProtectionKeychain as String: true ] let addKeyStatus = SecItemAdd(keyParams as CFDictionary, nil) if addKeyStatus == errSecSuccess { print("Successfully added the private key.: \(addKeyStatus)") } else { print("Failed to add the private key.: \(addKeyStatus)") } }
