According to the WWDC25 Presentation Track workouts with HealthKit on iOS and iPadOS, there is supposed to be a new property for restoring an active workout after a crash on iOS/iPadOS. The developer documentation also supports this. However, this property does not seem to exist in the latest Xcode 26 beta, even in projects targeting iOS 26.0 as the minimum version.
Am I missing something? Has this property not been made available yet? It is actually looking like all of the new iOS 26.0 properties are missing UIScene.ConnectionOptions on my system.

I'm seeking some guidance on the App Store review process and technical best practices for a watchOS app.
My goal is to create an app that uses HealthKit to continuously monitor a user's heart rate in the background for sessions lasting between 30 minutes and 3 hours. This app would not be a fitness or workout tracker.
My primary question is about the best way to achieve this reliably while staying within the App Store Review Guidelines.
Is it advisable to use the WorkoutKit framework to start a custom, non-fitness "session" for the purpose of continuous background monitoring?
Are there any other recommended APIs or frameworks for this kind of background data collection on watchOS that I should be aware of?
What are the key review considerations I should be mindful of, particularly regarding Guideline 4.1 (Design) and the intended use of APIs?
My app's core functionality would require this kind of data for a beneficial purpose. I want to ensure my approach is technically sound and has the best chance of a successful review.
Any insights or advice from developers who have experience with similar use cases would be incredibly helpful!

New in iOS 26 and WatchOS 26 is a Sleep Score calculation for users based on Duration, Bedtime and Interruptions.
Unfortunately I can't find any APIs for developers to tap into this metric. Yes, in theory it's all created off the same Sleep Analysis data already available with HealthKit but that makes it very hard to recreate in our apps. If the numbers don't match up exactly, users will understandably complain.
Can anyone confirm that this is the case and I've not missed a Sleep Score API? I'll then file feedback.
Hopefully this doesn't go the way of Heart Rate Zones where the Apple Watch iPhone app has generated them for years and provided no way for third party apps to access these values (yes many feedbacks provided previously).
Finally at last Apple Health supports saving .distancePaddleSports, .distanceCrossCountrySkiing, .distanceRowing, .distanceSkatingSports, and much more.
The backstory. In the land of 10,000 lakes, there hasn't been a way to save 'canoe' or 'kayak' distance and I've been asking for it for years. Thank you health team for adding it this year!

Prior we could just save the totalDistance to a workout, but since the HKWorkout initializers were deprecated we no longer have a supported way to save these distances in our workouts. The iOS 18 / watchOS 11 introduction addresses this. If you want to know more why you can't do this in earlier versions you can check these feedback titles:

Great, so there is new support that solves all of these requests and issues for the new version of the OSes. However, the downside is now that there is not much for documentation. Unlike the .runningSpeed and .runningPower introduced in iOS 16 / watchOS 9, none of the new iOS 18 / watchOS 11 types have documentation, at all. To some degree this is understandable, but types from last year still remain undocumented too.
Without this information for the data types introduced in both iOS 17/18 and watchOS 10/11 it makes building and integrating with these new types difficult to say the least. We can't make assumptions about anything.
Can we get a documentation update for new (and existing) quantity types for when Apple Watch will automatically generate samples?

I know that the behavior has changed from release to release for some of these types, so documentation would be based on OS version. If you didn't catch it, watchOS 11 will now associate .cyclingSpeed for cycling workouts both indoor and outdoor.

To the other third party fitness apps out there, how are you managing the knowledge of which devices collect which data types on which versions of the OS?
Sure, we could look at the HKLiveWorkoutDatSource and inspect the typesToCollect property across a bunch of devices, but again that is trial by error not 'as documented'. Is the behavior of simulators guaranteed to match the behavior of real devices? Maybe, but also maybe not.
Fingers crossed for a nice documentation update to spell out all of the behavioral details.
Apple folks / DTS, many of the above feedbacks are addressed and I plan to update or close them after the releases this fall. Some are still outstanding.
P.S. I hope that .paddleSports gets deprecated and split into individual activity types like skiing did years ago. Their MET scores are different according to the research on the physical activity compendium site.

Hello HealthKit Experts & Enthusiasts!
I am building an app called one sec which forces people to take a deep breath before they can use social media apps (it’s using Shortcuts Automations for that).
One important feature of one sec is the Good Morning Countdown:
For a specified time after waking up (e.g. 30mins) selected apps are blocked completely. This helps to start the day screen-free.
They way it works is, the user grants access to read HKCategoryTypeIdentifier.sleepAnalysis data.
I have implemented a HKObserverQuery and enableBackgroundDelivery in order to be informed whenever new HKCategoryTypeIdentifier.sleepAnalysis becomes available.
I noticed that when I have my device connected to Xcode, this works as expected. However, when I quit the app and launch it from my Home Screen, my observer query is not informed about new sleep data (except when my app is running in foreground). Any ideas?
Furthermore, I have noticed that sometimes sleep data is provided delayed to HealthKit, many minutes (sometimes even longer) after waking up, no sleep samples are to be found in the Health app. Of course, for my app it is crucial to get accurate + timely so apps can be blocked accordingly.
Is this an issue that the Apple Watch first needs to send the samples to the phone?

I'm trying to hook into the new workoutEffort score supported in iOS 18, I am collecting this information from users when they submit their workout and trying to add a sample to the HKWorkout in the same manner as I've been adding other samples like bodyweight, calories burned, etc.
I'm receiving the error:
HKWorkout: Sample of type HKQuantityTypeIdentifierWorkoutEffortScore must be related to a workout
I tried adding the samples using HKWorkoutBuilder.add([samples]) as which has been working perfectly for calories burned & bodyweight, but I am receiving the above error for workoutEffortScore
As a second approach, I tried adding the sample after I called finishWorkout on the HKWorkoutBuilder and received back the HKWorkout object using HKHealthStore.add([samples], to: HKWorkout) and am still receiving the same error!
I don't know otherwise how to relate a sample to a workout, I thought those were the APIs to do so? I'm using Xcode 16.0 RC (16A242) and testing on an iOS 16 Pro simulator
There's no option to help me turn it on in my iPhone 16 Pro Max MYW43LL/A (iOS 18.1 developer beta) and Apple Watch Series 10 MWX13LW/A (watchOS 11 Developer Beta).

Apple is using the RPE scale for workout effort scores. This stands for the Rate of Perceived Exertion. They're specifically using the CR-10 scale, at least from what I can tell by saving values to HealthKit. They only accept value between 0 and 10.
Has anyone been able to find a scientific or academic paper on how they have chosen their different effort breakouts?
Right from the Fitness app on iPhone and Activity app on Apple Watch:
1-3 Easy
4-6 Moderate
7-8 Hard
9-10 All Out
There is zero documentation on these new types, which makes it difficult for workout recording apps to properly and appropriately save this new data type. Sure, we can use the Apple apps as a reference, but since there isn't a built-in Apple SwiftUI sheet to present this data, and no references to academia to point our users to, our solutions would just look the same.

I have FB12696743 open since July 21, 2023 and this happened again today.
I get home at approx 10 mins after the hour, walk appox 50 ft across my yard, up 5 steps into my house, let the dog out and pace on my deck watching the dog, go back in the house walk around the kitchen while preparing dinner. A total of about 200 ft. I sit down about 35 past the hour and start to eat and at 10 mins to the next our and I get the reminder to stand.
On the other side I wake up at 5 mins to hour. Walk 8 steps to the bathroom and successfully achieve the stand for that hour.
WHY!?!?!? 😁🤣
It may have made sense in the early days of watchOS, but given the Apple Watch is now 10 years old and we have "Standalone" Apple Watch apps, it no longer makes sense to have this seemingly arbitrary limitation of only being able to query 7 days of data on the watch. I have an open feedback (FB7649612) from 2020 with no responses and ask this question every year at WWDC Developer labs. WHY must we still deal with this limitation which only causes other developers to store critical health data in iCloud or on their own servers in order to provide a robust stand alone watch experience on the Apple Watch. Even Apple themselves must either use a separate private API or use iCloud for the new Vitals app. How else can I escalate this request?

We currently use the HKCategoryValueMenstrualFlow enum to determine the type of menstrual flow: light, medium, etc. a user is having. We also use this enum in determining if it's an actual period day.
The Problem
I see HKCategoryValueMenstrualFlow was recently deprecated but has not been replaced by another data type.
Are there plans to replace/update it with another data type?
When or at what point in the future will this deprecation cause a problem in my code?

I am building a workout app that has an option to add segments to differentiate different stages of the training session. Segments are added the following way:

Inside Health -> Workouts -> Show All Data, the segments appear, but in Fitness app there are no segments. The workout is .paddleSports. I thought that maybe the workout type was the problem, but when I start the sessions from the native workout app, segments are added and shown in the Fitness app:
In other posts I saw suggested to add an event as .marker instead of .segment, but the result is the same, it does not appear.
Is there something I am doing wrong? How can I show the segments into the Fitness app?
Another question, I would like to add stroke rate and stroke count to my paddling session, is there a way to add it? Paddle Sports workout was recently introduced and it would be great to have the option to add those values.

But I would love to know what the limitations / expected delivery delay for frequency: .immediate is.
The documentation is only very vague about this and specifies that some sample types such as steps are only delivered once per hour.
But how about sleep data? Is this expected to be delivered immediately once available on iPhone?

Hi everyone,
while testing HKWorkoutSession with HKLiveWorkoutBuilder on iOS 26 Beta (cycling workout), I noticed the following behavior:
– Starting a cycling HKWorkoutSession automatically connects to my Bluetooth heart rate monitor and records HR into HealthKit ✅
– However, my Bluetooth cycling power meter and cadence sensor (standard BLE Cycling Power & CSC services) are not connected automatically, and no data is recorded into HealthKit ❌
On Apple Watch, when starting a cycling workout, these sensors do connect automatically and their data is written to HealthKit — which is exactly what I would expect on iOS as well.
Question:
Is this by design, or is support for power and cadence sensors planned for iOS in the same way as on watchOS?
Or do we, as developers, need to implement the BLE Cycling Power and CSC profiles ourselves (via CoreBluetooth) if we want these metrics?
Environment:
– iOS 26 Beta
– HKWorkoutSession & HKLiveWorkoutBuilder (cycling)
– Bluetooth HRM connects automatically
– BLE power & cadence sensors do not
This feature would make it much easier to develop cycling apps with full HealthKit integration, and also create a more consistent user experience compared to watchOS.

I am very happy to see that HealthKit with OS26 is bringing HKLiveWorkoutDataSource to iOS and iPadOS. I have been replicating a similar type for the last several years for users that only have an iPhone.
I did notice that the data types that the different platform data sources collect automatically is different. That makes sense if you think exclusively about what the device can actually capture. Bluetooth HRM is the only Bluetooth SIG profile that is out-of-the-box supported for Apple Health on iOS and iPadOS (right?). Whereas watchOS 10 got all of the cycling sensors (woohoo!).
It would be great if the types to collect were the same across platforms even if the device couldn't collect the data now, because then in the future when / if new sensor support is added, it will be transparent to developers. Fantastic. Easier life as an indie / third party developer. At least that is the idea.
And yes, I know I can also write Core Bluetooth code and roll my own SIG implementation for the cycling profiles, but Apple already has this code in one os, 'just copy it, it will be easy'. I know that isn't the reality especially against the new ASK framework, but one can hope and dream right? Imagine how many more apps would contribute that data if it was supported out of the box. An alternative, GitHub is a great place for Apple to share their Core Bluetooth implementation of the SIG profiles :). Just another thought.
