I have a Safari Web Extension that successfully receives a message from a webpage and returns a response.
I now want to add a user interface to the Safari Web Extension. How do I do this?
I have modified the default template code as follow to add an NSAlert for testing. The modal runs, but no alert ever appears, and the code remains stuck at runModal.
What is the correct way to add a UI to a webextension?
- (void)beginRequestWithExtensionContext:(NSExtensionContext *)context {
id message = [context.inputItems.firstObject userInfo][SFExtensionMessageKey];
NSLog(@"Received message from browser.runtime.sendNativeMessage: %@", message);
NSAlert* alert = [[NSAlert alloc]init];
[alert setMessageText:message[@"request"]];
[alert setInformativeText:@"Hello"];
[alert runModal];
NSExtensionItem *response = [[NSExtensionItem alloc] init];
response.userInfo = @{ SFExtensionMessageKey: @{ @"id": message[@"id"], @"uuid": message[@"uuid"], @"contentType": message[@"contentType"], @"response": message[@"request"] } };
[context completeRequestReturningItems:@[ response ] completionHandler:nil];
}
@end

I am encountering an issue where we are unable to run or launch Safari Driver in our automation tests using macOS. When attempting to run safaridriver -p 8888 from the terminal, we receive the following error message:
ERROR: safaridriver could not launch because it is not configured correctly or you need to authenticate. Re-run safaridriver(1) and pass the '--enable' flag to configure and/or authenticate.
For more information, consult the safaridriver(1) man page.
Despite running sudo safaridriver --enable as an administrator (even as root), the issue persists.
I’ve searched through various online forums and GitHub repositories but couldn’t find a working solution. Some references are:

Hi team, if I log into my app on Safari and try to enroll/challenge MFA security key option, I will be able to see this pop-up that gives me the option to pick either passkeys or external security keys
However, my team member who's using the same version of safari, can only see the external security key option
Why is this?

Hello everyone.
I have a very strange behavior with smart app banners in Safari.
When I don't have installed app on my phone, I can't see the banner on our product main page. When I installed the app, I can see the banner, which allows me to go directly to the app. When I put any other app's ID in the meta tag it works perfectly even if I don't have its installed app.
So the code is right, what can be the reason of this behavior? Any settings of the app are required?
I have a Safari extension which allows the user to load their own homepage upon opening a new tab. The extension works by retrieving the homepage URL from UserDefaults and then redirecting to it using window.location.replace. In iOS 18, if the homepage is unable to be loaded due to, for example the user having no internet connection, Safari will go into an rapid loading loop, which eventually stops after a while. This is unlike iOS 17, where trying to reproduce the same scenario will end up with a Safari error page, which should be the expected behaviour.
In short, instead of Safari going into an infinite loading loop, it should display a Safari error page like iOS 17 does.
As this issue is only happening on iOS 18, I am almost certain it's an iOS bug and would appreciate if this can be fixed as soon as possible.
I have created a Feedback Assistant report with ID FB15853821, which contains a sysdiagnose file from my iPhone 16 Pro, as well as two videos, one from my iPhone 16 Pro with iOS 18.2 beta 3 and the other video showing a comparison between iOS 18 and 17. Both videos first show the extension functioning correctly with an active internet connection, but when I disable my internet, the iOS 18 Safari goes into an infinite loop.
Here are the steps to reproduce the issue:
Download the Homepage for Safari app from the App Store: https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/homepage-for-safari/id6481118559
Enter any valid homepage URL, such as https://apple.com and tap Save
Go to Settings -> Apps -> Safari -> Extensions -> Homepage and enable the extension
Make sure Open New Tabs is set to “Homepage”
Turn off both WiFi and cellular data and attempt to open a new tab in Safari
Please note that this also happens with iOS 18.2 beta 4.
Hello Apple Developer Team,
I would love to see iCloud Keychain Autofill and Touch ID support extended to Chromium-based browsers on macOS (such as Ecosia, Brave, or Vivaldi).
Currently, Safari allows autofill of passwords using Touch ID, but when using other browsers, I have to manually copy-paste credentials from Keychain Access, which is time-consuming.
Would it be possible for Apple to provide an API or framework that allows non-WebKit browsers to integrate iCloud Keychain autofill while keeping security intact?
This feature would make macOS more convenient for users who prefer alternative browsers while keeping security standards high.
Thanks in advance for considering this!
Best regards, Kilian
When i use adjust redirect:
https://app.adjust.com/xxxxxx?label=xxxxxx&redirect=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.testingmcafeesites.com%2Ftestcat_bu.html
It open 2 links:
https://Fwww.testingmcafeesites.com
then http://www.testingmcafeesites.com/testcat_bu.html
And in my app use redirect link for open a web page. But content in domain url like https://www.testingmcafeesites.com/ not be set. So it talke long time often 1 minute for finish request in first link.
It hapen only in ios 18 i tested in ios 17 and ios 16 it open one link only.
We have developed a DNS filter extension that works for most applications, but it does not receive all DNS queries.
In particular, if we have our extension installed and enabled, we see Safari browsing cause local DNS servers to be used instead of going through our extension.
What is the logic for how DNS servers vs. extensions are chosen to resolve DNS queries?
Hi all,
I need to detect if my web application (pure HTML / Javascript) is opened from:
Safari from a Mac
Safari from an iPad but by asking for the desktop version
I tried to check for many properties (including the navigator.useragent) but no difference were visible. Anyone could help me?
Thank you
DNR rules redirecting to an extension path lead to an error page: “Safari can’t open the page. The error is: “The operation couldn’t be completed. (NSURLErrorDomain error -1008.)” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1,008).”
Here is a demo extension that replicates the bug: https://github.com/lenacohen/Safari-Test-Extensions/tree/main/dnr-extension-path-redirect
This is an example of a redirect rule that leads to an error page instead of the extension path page:
chrome.declarativeNetRequest.updateDynamicRules({addRules: [
{
id: 2,
priority: 1,
action: {
type: "redirect",
redirect: {
extensionPath: "/web_accessible_resources/test_redirect.html"
}
},
condition: {
urlFilter: "||washingtonpost.com^",
resourceTypes: [
"main_frame"
]
}
}
]});
The extension path is included in web_accessible_resources in the extension manifest:
"web_accessible_resources": [{
"resources": [
"web_accessible_resources/test_redirect.html"
],
I also submitted a bug report on Apple's Feedback Assistant: FB16607632
I want to write an app, that lets users restore all oben windows and tabs from any given point in a TimeMachine backup. The store location seems to have changed. In earlier versions it was possible to restore the open windows and tabs by retrieving
/Users/[UserName]/Library/Containers/com.apple.Safari/Data/Library/Safari/SafariTabs.db
…/SafariTabs.db-shm
…/SafariTabs.db-wal
As of 18.3 this doesn’t work any more, even though these files get updated with the use of Safari
What else would I need to retrieve from a back up disk?
Thank you very much for any hints!
My app is a Safari extension. When trying to validate the app, I get the following error:
App sandbox not enabled. The following executables must include the "com.apple.security.app-sandbox" entitlement with a Boolean value of true in the entitlements property list: [( "app.rango.Rango.pkg/Payload/Rango for Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Rango for Safari" )] Refer to App Sandbox page at https://developer.apple.com/documentation/security/app_sandbox for more information on sandboxing your app.
I don't know why this is happening. I have app sandbox enabled in both the app and the extension target. I have both entitlement files. When executing codesign -d --entitlements :- /path/to/binary I get the following:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "https://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"><plist version="1.0"><dict><key>com.apple.security.app-sandbox</key><true/><key>com.apple.security.files.user-selected.read-only</key><true/><key>com.apple.security.get-task-allow</key><true/><key>com.apple.security.network.client</key><true/></dict></plist>
If I check on Activity Monitor, on the sandbox column it shows true. I have no idea why I keep getting this error when all indicates that the app is actually sandboxed.
I have a Safari App Extension which allows users to switch between last open tabs with a shortcut option+tab in the same way it's possible to switch between last open apps with command+tab.
Here is how i do it:
I inject a content script on all websites which has the only thing – key listener for option+tab presses.
When a user presses option+tab, that keyboard listener detects it and sends a message to the Safari Handler.
Then Safari Handler sends a message to the containing app and it shows a panel with last open tabs.
This approach has a problem: it shows a message to a user in settings: "Can read sensitive info from web pages, including passwords..."
Which is bad, because in reality i don't read passwords.
If i remove SFSafariContentScript key in the Safari App Extension target's Info.plist, then this message about reading sensitive data disappears, but then i loose the ability to open the tabs panel.
How can I open my app window with a shortcut without frightening a user?
It's possible to listen to global key presses, but that would require a user to grant the app permissions of Accessibility (Privacy & Security) in macOS system settings, which also sounds shady.
I know an app which does not require an Accessibility permission: https://apps.apple.com/ua/app/tabback-lite/id6469582909 and at the same time it does not tell a user about reading sensitive data in the extension settings.
Here is my app: https://apps.apple.com/ua/app/tab-finder/id6741719894 It's open-source: https://github.com/kopyl/safari-tab-switcher

Recently we started noticing in Safari v18.2 browser an unexpected useragent set for https://www.espn.com pages like -
"Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_15_7) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/110.0.0.0 Safari/537.36" (recognized as Chrome by most UA detection logic) and breaks our video playback in some scenarios.
When digging into this we came across site specific quirks and the "Disable site-specific hacks" setting which fixed the playback functionality and set a more expected UA - "Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_15_7) AppleWebKit/605.1.15 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/18.2 Safari/605.1.15".
Is the unexpected UA being set somewhere in Safari/Webkit? Can this be removed so site functionality works without needing to find the "Disable site-specific hacks" setting?
I'm posting a question here as I have encountered an issue while seeking help from engineers in the thread. thread773837
If the "Not Secure Connection Warnings" is enabled in Settings > App > Safari, are HTTP connections not allowed under any circumstances?
I also posted a question about NSAllowsLocalNetworking not being applied, and I was informed that ATS (App Transport Security) is not related to SFSafariViewController. If that's the case, what feature causes the error "Safari cannot open the page. Error: Failed to navigate to an HTTP URL with HTTPS-only mode enabled"?
I am currently working to resolve this issue.
When using iOS VoiceOver to navigate a webpage, selecting a element correctly activates the :focus-visible state. However, when VoiceOver moves to a non-button element (such as a or ), the previously focused button retains its :focus-visible state. The focus indicator only updates when VoiceOver moves to another .
This behavior can be confusing for screen reader users, as it creates the appearance of multiple elements being focused simultaneously. It also differs from expected keyboard navigation behavior, where focus styles typically update as soon as the user moves to a new interactive element.
Is this an intentional VoiceOver behavior, or could this be a bug? If intentional, is there a recommended workaround to ensure correct focus indication when moving between different types of elements?
Steps to Reproduce:
Enable VoiceOver on an iOS device.
Navigate using swipe gestures or explore-by-touch to focus on a .
Observe that the button correctly receives the :focus-visible styling.
Move to a non-button element (e.g., a with tabindex="0" or an ).
Notice that the button still retains its :focus-visible state, even though VoiceOver has moved to a new element.
Expected Behavior:
The previously focused should lose its :focus-visible state when VoiceOver moves to a different interactive element, just as it does when using keyboard navigation.
Actual Behavior:
The :focus-visible state remains on the previously focused button unless VoiceOver moves to another . This can create confusion by displaying multiple focus indicators at once.
Tested On:
iOS 17.7, 18.3.1
iOS Safari
iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max
Hi all,
Chrome has it already - animation-timeline aka scroll-animations.
I can nowhere find any informations on what's the status in Safari/Webkit.
Seems like they do not have it on the agenda at all?
Does anyone know anything - I wanted to push a feature request for that - but also seem there is no feature request list anymore for webkit.
See: https://www.w3.org/TR/scroll-animations/
Cheers and kind regards!
As of IOS 18.3, there browser.tabs.create methods active property which is supposed to determine whether a tab get open in the active window or not is not working as it should. I have the active property set to false but the tab still gets opened and is active on the window. Tested on older ios versions 18.2 and below and it works as it should.
please advise
We have a Web Extension that uses firebase for auth. It was working fine until the latest version of Safari 18.3 got released few days ago on January 27, 2025.
All of out extension versions stopped working on it; even the ones that are published on App Store. It uses FirebaseJS v9.23.0.
Same version of the extension are working fine on other browsers. We use onAuthStateChanged to listen to auth related events; but it is never fired now.
