A Summary of the WWDC25 Group Lab - Developer Tools
At WWDC25 we launched a new type of Lab event for the developer community - Group Labs. A Group Lab is a panel Q&A designed for a large audience of developers. Group Labs are a unique opportunity for the community to submit questions directly to a panel of Apple engineers and designers. Here are the highlights from the WWDC25 Group Lab for Developer Tools. Will my project codebase be used for training when I use Xcode's intelligent assistant powered by cloud-based models? When using ChatGPT without logging in, your data will not be used to improve any models. If you log in to a ChatGPT account, this is based on your ChatGPT account settings, which allows you to opt-out (it defaults to on). When using Xcode with accounts for other model providers, you should check with the policies of your provider. And finally, at no point will any portion of your codebase be used to train or improve any Apple models. We'd love to make our SwiftUI Previews (and soon, Playgrounds) as snappy as possible. Is there any way to skip certain build steps, such as running linters? It seems the build environment is exactly the same (compared to a debug build), but maybe there's a trick. Starting with Xcode 16, SwiftUI previews use the exact same build artifacts as the regular build. The new Playgrounds support in Xcode 26 uses these build artifacts too. Shell script build phases are the most common thing that introduces extra build time, so as a first step, try turning off all shell script build phases (like linters) to get an idea if that’s the issue. If those build phases add significant time to your build, consider moving some of those phases into asynchronous steps, such as running linters before committing instead of on every build. If you do need a shell script build phase to run during your build, make sure to explicitly define the input and output files, as that is a huge way to improve your build performance. Are we able to provide additional context for the models, like coding standards? Documentation for third party dependencies? Documentation on your own codebase that explains things like architecture and more? In general, Xcode will automatically search for the right context based on the question and the evolving answer, as the model can interact multiple times with your project as it develops an answer. This will automatically pick up the coding style of the code it sees, and can include files that contain architecture comments, etc. Beyond automatic context, you can manually attach other documents, even if they aren't in your project. For example, you could make a file with rules and ideas and attach it, and it will influence the response. We are very aware of other kinds of automatic context like rule files, etc, though Xcode does not support these at this time. Once ChatGPT is enabled for Coding Intelligence in Xcode 26, and I sign into my existing ChatGPT account, will the ChatGPT Coding Intelligence model in Xcode know about chat conversations on Xcode development done previously in the ChatGPT Mac app? Xcode does not use information from other conversations, and conversations started in Xcode are not accessible in the web UI or ChatGPT app. Is there a plan to make SwiftUI views easier to locate and understand in the view hierarchy like UIKit views? SwiftUI uses a declarative paradigm to define your user interface. That allows you to specify what you want, with the system translating that into an efficient representation at runtime. Unlike traditional AppKit and UIKit, seeing the runtime representation of SwiftUI views isn't sufficient in order to understand why it's not doing what you want. This year, we introduced a SwiftUI Instrument that shows why things are happening, like view re-rendering. Is it possible to use the AI chat with ChatGPT Enterprise? My company doesn't allow us to use the general ChatGPT, only the enterprise version they have setup that prevents data from being leaked Yes, Xcode 26 supports logging into any existing ChatGPT account, including enterprise accounts. If that does not meet your needs, you can also setup a local server that implements the popular chat completions REST API to talk to your enterprise account how you need. Now that Icon Composer is here, how does it complement or replace existing vector design tools such as Sketch for icon design? Icon Composer complements your existing vector design tools. You should continue to create your shapes, gradients, and layers in another tool like Sketch, and compose the exported SVG layers in Icon Composer. Once you bring your layers into Icon Composer, you can then use it to influence the translucency, blur, and specular highlights for your icon. What’s one feature or improvement in the new Xcode that you personally think developers will love, but might not immediately discover? Maybe something tucked away or quietly powerful that’s flown under the radar so far? One feature we're particularly excited about is the new power profiler for iOS, which gives you further insights into the energy consumption of your app beyond what was possible with the energy instrument previously. You can learn more about how to use this instrument and how it can help you greatly reduce your apps battery usage in the documentation, as well as the session Profile and optimize power usage in your app. There were also improvements in accessibility this year with Voice Control, where you can naturally speak your Swift code to Xcode, and it understands the Swift syntax as you speak. To see it in action, take a look at the demonstration in What’s new in Xcode 26. We have a software advisory council that is very sensitive to having our private information going to the cloud in any form. What information do you have to help me guide Xcode and Apple Intelligence through the acceptance process? One thing you can do is configure a proxy for your enterprise that implementing the popular Chat Completions API endpoint protocol. When using a model provider via URL, you can use your proxy endpoint to inspect the network traffic for anything that you do not want sent outside of your enterprise, and then forward the traffic through the proxy to your chosen model provider. Are there list of recommended LLMs to use with Xcode via Intelligence/Local? I've tried Gemma3-12B, but.. I hope there are better options? Apple doesn't have a published list of recommended local models. This is a fast-moving space, and so a recommendation would become out of date very quickly as new models are released. We encourage you to try out the local model support in Xcode 26 with models that you find meet your needs, and let us and the community know! (continued below)

Xcode 16 RC - Cannot add packages
When opening the package management sheet there is a loading indicator going forever preventing the button to be enabled. The window displays collections but not "Recently used" (which also loads indefinitely). Anyone else seeing this? Any way to clear Xcode preferences/caches for the manager?

The iPhone needs to be prepared for development, and development services need to be enabled.
I downloaded a program from Stanford University and am trying to get it to work on my iPhone. The program works on my computer, but when I try to upload it to the App Store, I get all sorts of errors. I am running Xcode 16 on a Max Studio. When I run the compiler, I get a message: “The iPhone needs to be prepared for development, and development services need to be enabled. Ensure that the device is unlocked.” I am confused by the term “unlocked.” Is the message referring to a lock by carrier or an on-device lock? How do I enable development services? -Merwyn

/Users/USER/*/python3.8 is crashing
Every now and again, I see that Python 3.8 crashes. Now, I tried to get rid of all Python 3.8 interpreters on my system. But the crash log for this one gives a Path of /Users/USER/*/python3.8. What does that mean? That's not a real path on my filesystem. The crash is due to Python not finding a dylb it needs: Process: python3.8 [2946] Path: /Users/USER/*/python3.8 Identifier: python3.8 Version: ??? Code Type: X86-64 (Translated) Parent Process: launchd [1] User ID: 501 Date/Time: 2024-09-20 17:03:49.4230 -0700 OS Version: macOS 14.6.1 (23G93) Report Version: 12 Anonymous UUID: <redacted> Sleep/Wake UUID: <redacted> Time Awake Since Boot: 520000 seconds Time Since Wake: 43861 seconds System Integrity Protection: enabled Notes: PC register does not match crashing frame (0x0 vs 0x202E45A78) Crashed Thread: 0 Exception Type: EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT) Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000 Termination Reason: Namespace DYLD, Code 1 Library missing Library not loaded: /usr/local/opt/gettext/lib/libintl.8.dylib Referenced from: <redacted> /Users/USER/*/python3.8 Reason: tried: '/usr/local/opt/gettext/lib/libintl.8.dylib' (no such file), '/System/Volumes/Preboot/Cryptexes/OS/usr/local/opt/gettext/lib/libintl.8.dylib' (no such file), '/usr/local/opt/gettext/lib/libintl.8.dylib' (no such file), '/usr/local/lib/libintl.8.dylib' (no such file), '/usr/lib/libintl.8.dylib' (no such file, not in dyld cache) (terminated at launch; ignore backtrace) Now, this only happens (I think) when I'm running VS Code, which I normally hate doing, but I’m trying to develop an Autodesk Fusion plug-in in Python, and that’s how it’s done. I don’t know if this Python was installed by Apple, or if I got via one of the dozens of SDKs I've installed over the years. VS Code has a way to search for Python interpreters, and I used that to delete all the old ones I could find. And I'm pretty sure macOS is on a more recent version.

Could not build Module 'UIKit'
Im currentrly having this issue when compiling iOS for my react native app. The error is "Could not build Module 'UIKit'" which brings more subsequent errors down the line like "Could not build module 'DarwinFoundation'" and "Could not build module 'Foundation'. Might it be an error of dependencies or something like that. Im currently on MacOS sequoia, running XCode 16 and trying to build on iOS 18 with react native 0.75.3. For context, i inherited the project with React native 0.69.7 and had to upgrade. Please help, i've been stuck for days and i do not know what to do. Everything in the internet talks about XCode 16 beta but not the actual public release.

[WatchOS 11, Xcode 16] Can't get watch to appear in Xcode
This morning I bought my first-ever Apple Watch for the sole purpose of development and proceeded to spend six hours failing at the first step of development: getting the device to enter developer mode and connect to Xcode. Since I'm not seeing any WatchOS 11 posts on this issue, it might just be me. This is why I'm making a new thread that's specific to WatchOS 11, Xcode 16, and maybe Series 10. Some particulars for my case: Overall __Followed Xcode 16.0 documentation On a watchOS device that you use for development, go to Settings > Privacy > Developer Mode. To toggle Developer mode, use the Developer Mode switch. To pair an Apple Watch to a Mac, connect its companion iPhone to the Mac with a cable, and ensure that the iPhone is paired for development. After this step, follow any instructions on the Apple Watch to trust the Mac. When paired through an iPhone running iOS 17 or later, Xcode connects to the Apple Watch over Wi-Fi __Tried all the folk remedies listed in the (many) previous posts on enabling development mode and connecting to Xcode iOS 18.0 __In developer mode __Connected to macOS via USB, trusts computer WatchOS 11.0 __Prompt to trust computer appears and trust is established __‘Developer Mode’ list item never appears at end of the ‘Privacy’ menu under ‘Settings’ __‘Developer’ item sometimes appears at the end of ‘Settings’ Despite never having seen or toggled ‘Developer Mode’ under ‘Privacy’ Persists across reboots Possible that WatchOS 11 eliminated the item under Settings > Privacy? If so, documentation not up to date Xcode 16.0 __Watch never appears under ‘Manage Run Destinations’ After installing sample app to phone, then attempting to install WatchOS app via iOS Watch app, “Cannot install at this time” alert appears App icon appears on watch, and tapping on it leads to an alert with, “This app cannot be installed because its integrity could not be verified”, despite wi-fi working Watch apps for other apps (e.g. Apple Store) can be successfully installed via iOS Watch app Above suggests the watch isn't truly in developer mode despite Settings > Developer appearing and persisting across reboots __The network path from Xcode to WatchOS should be clear Reconfigured router such that devices on the same network can talk to each other iPad and iPhone appear with network icon when not connected via cable and Xcode can run code on them Watch on same network as iPad and iPhone macOS 15.0 __Due to security policy, cannot use Wi-Fi (disabled both physically and via sudo /usr/sbin/networksetup -setnetworkserviceenabled 'Wi-Fi' off) Possible that Xcode can only establish a connection to WatchOS via Wi-Fi and not via ethernet bridged to wifi. If so, a confirmation would be hugely helpful. This is currently my prime suspect. Wi-fi cannot be re-enabled, so I'm trying workarounds like connecting watch to phone's hotspot (doesn't work) and somehow using phone to provide network to the Mac. __Due to security policy, firewall configured to block all incoming connections Shouldn't be an issue since Xcode doesn't need incoming connections to see non-watch devices __Due to security policy, mDNSResponder and mDNSResponderHelper disabled Also shouldn't be an issue, but including just in case

Swift Package with Demo project with Xcode 16
My current workflow to have a Swift Package with a Demo is like this: PackageFolder > DemoFolder I have a package, with a Demo folder inside. I can open the Demo project and Drag&Drop the local PackageFolder to override the remote dependency with the local one. This allows to edit the package while inside the demo project. With Xcode 16 this does no longer work because Xcode does not allow to drop an ancestor of the file path where the project is located. Xcode does not tell this while you drop, it just does not allow it. But it tells you thats the reason, when you try to add the local package as a dependency to the project: "The selected package cannot be a direct ancestor of the project.". (Dropping other local packages still works, see: https://forums.developer.apple.com/forums/thread/756824) What is the expected way to handle a package with a demo project with Xcode 16?

SwiftUI [[stichable]] metal shader & CIFilter written in metal extern"C" can't work at the same time
In my project, I used two metal shaders in two ways. One is link to SwiftUI's modifier .colorEffect(ShaderLibrary.myShader()), which metal shader marked as [[stichable]]. Another one is a custom CIFilter, which kernel been written in external "C" closure. Because custom CIFilter must add build rules so Xcode can compile it, so I added -fcikernel to Metal Compiler and -cikernel to Metal Linker from Build Settings, just like Apple's document told me that. But the result is weird, if I add rules, custom CIFilter works, [[stichable]] shader doesn't work. if I delete rules, and comment out code of CIFilter(for avoiding warning), [[stichable]] shader works, but now I can't use my custom CIFilter. Actually, once these two shaders works well in my project, but when I updated Xcode from 15 to 16, it became weird, the 2 shaders can't exist at same time. Even though I go back to Xcode 15, I can't save them. I have no idea, please help, thank you. XCode 16 / iOS 18 on iPhone 14 Pro

Xcode 16 Error AppShortcut phrases may have at most one parameter
I suppose this is a bug in compiler. Xcode 16.0 (16A242d) - AppStore release version When building a project from Xcode 15 in Xcode 16, an error occurs: appintentsmetadataprocessor[12633:13677489] error: At least one halting error produced during export. No AppIntents metadata have been exported and this target is not usable with AppIntents until errors are resolved. AppShortcut phrases may have at most one parameter, but found phrase, "Set Dark Mode ${darkMode} for Widget ${widget}" with more than one parameter: darkMode, widget Apparently this is an Xcode bug because I have a production app with this AppShortcut and it works fine in Apple Shortcuts. Everything is made according to the official WWDC video about AppShortcuts https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2022/10170

Class name duplication between core data and Apple private framework
After updating to Sonoma and Xcode 16, I get this when I run my macOS (objective C) app from Xcode: Class Trace is implemented in both /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AudioAnalytics.framework/Versions/A/AudioAnalytics (0x273300e68) and /Users/jean/Library/Developer/Xcode/DerivedData/STRyper-ezekeictrpwjnggxusdnbwqpzqtf/Build/Products/Debug/STRyper.app/Contents/MacOS/STRyper (0x10015b8f0). One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined. How do I solve this without changing the class name? Trace is a subclass of NSManagedObject. FYI, the core data model uses the "Xcode 8.0" tools version and the module of the class is set to "Global namespace". Changing the class name doing so would force me to create a new core data model, and mess with other things as I encode some core data objects to files using NSCoding (which uses class names). Thanks.

IOS 18 Issue
Hello Apple! I have been an avid fan of your new software update ever since June, when the first beta of the IOS 18 was released. However, when I upgraded my phone to the IOS 18 that was released last week, I noticed a significant deterioration of my battery life. My iphone was first bought last May so the battery capacity still sits at 100%, but because of the new software update, the capacity losed 3% until this day. Plus, the battery life loses 2% every 3 mins. I might say that I regret updating my phone. But nonetheless, everything was working good. 😭

XCode 16 RC and Sequoia 15 RC - Running a XCTest UI test runs the test but does not open the simulator and initiating a record just hangs and never runs
When I run a XCTest test on an IOS Target device, the test runs but the simulator is not opened so I can follow the screens being displayed and the key strokes. And when I initiate a record for a test method, it just hangs and never runs or open a simulator. Is anyone else experiencing these same issues running XCTest? Is this legacy framework not working with XCode 16 by design?

On-device hang detection with threshold lower than 250 ms
There is a WWDC session about this cool instrument to detect hangs on-device: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2022/10082/ I very like this tool; it's handy and gives useful stack traces, but the threshold of 250 ms is practically too high to use in a testing environment. It would be better if there was an option like 100 ms or something like that. I think most of the people can see the scrolling hang with a duration of 100-250 ms, and it would be cool to detect such hangs with this instrument. Is there a way to set a lower threshold, or can Apple consider adding such a threshold? Thank you!
