devicectl: clarify username requirement for "certain" domains
Hi there, When using devicectl to manage files: It's unclear for which domains the username should be provided It's unclear how to determine the username Listing files USAGE: devicectl device info files [<options>] --device <uuid|ecid|serial_number|udid|name|dns_name> --domain-type <domain-type> FILE OPTIONS: --username <username> The username of the user we should target. Only relevant for certain domains. --domain-type <domain-type> The file service domain. Valid values are: temporary, appDataContainer, appGroupDataContainer, systemCrashLogs. You must specify a valid domain and identifier pair. Certain domains must be accompanied by an identifier that provides additional context. For example, if the domain is an app data container, the identifier is the bundle ID of the app. For temporary directories, the identifier is a unique client-provided string which is used to get your own space, separate from those of other clients. --domain-identifier <domain-identifier> A unique string used to provide additional context to the domain. --username The username of the user we should target. It would help if these arguments could be explained in more detail.

java installed not fetched in system_profiler command
I am using system_profiler command to check on the installed application list from mac device. **Terminal command to check installed java version - ** But while running /usr/sbin/system_profiler SPApplicationsDataType -xml , I cant able to find Java as an installed application. Is this a known issue or do we have any alternative workaround to fetch the same?

Issue to reset "Privacy & Security" permissions
Hello, I am working on a script to update an application which bundle ID changed. Only the bundle ID was modified; all other aspects remain unchanged. This application requires access to "Screen & System Audio Recording" permissions, which are currently granted to the old bundle ID. The script performs the following steps: launchctl bootout gui/$(id -u) /Library/LaunchAgents/com.my_agent_1.plist pkgutil --forget com.my_agent_1 tccutil reset All com.my_agent_1 rm /Library/LaunchAgents/com.my_agent_1.plist rm -rf </path/to/com_my_agent_1> installer -dumplog -allowUntrusted -pkg </path/to/com_my_agent_2.pkg> -target / ... When running steps #1-6 without a restart between steps #5 and #6, the old bundle ID (com.my_agent_1) remains visible in TCC.db (verified via SQL queries). Looks like this is the reason why "com.my_agent_2" is not automatically added to the permission list (requiring manual add). Moreover, "tccutil reset All com.my_agent_1" does not work anymore, the error: tccutil: No such bundle identifier "com.my_agent_1": The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -10814.) Is there any way to completely clear the "Privacy & Security" permissions without requiring a system restart? Thank you a lot for your help in advance!

Signing Issues with VisionOS app
I am having an issue with signing and provisioning a Vision OS app. I have an iOS app and a VisionOS app. Everything works fine on the iOS but having issues with the VisionOS. First, I am having issues with xcodebuild -exportArchive. When I run it on an archive of my VisionOS app I get ** EXPORT FAILED ** error: exportArchive No Accounts error: exportArchive No profiles for 'X' were found Where X is my bundle ID. Meanwhile the iOS app succeeds. This is on a CI machine but I confirmed the distribution provision profile for the vision OS app is installed on the machine. Even if I change the value of the -exportOptionsPlist to the one I used for the iOS project I get this error. Is the issue in the archive itself? The archives are generated from building in Unity and archiving the xcodeproject with xcodebuild archive Second, as a workaround I archived a debug ipa on my machine and uploaded this ipa to my CI machine which has the credentials to sign for distribution. I use this script as an example as how to resign the IPA: https://gist.github.com/lodalo/754a35b48d382ae99b25 I remove the CodeSignatures and codesign both .app and UnityFramework.framework. Using this resigned IPA I get this error when I try to upload to app store connect (via Transporter app and altool) errors: Validation failed (409) Missing or invalid signature. The bundle 'X' at bundle path 'Payload/Y.app' is not signed using an Apple submission certificate. To verify the signing I used codesign -dvvv --entitlements - On both the iOS and VisionOS app and they have the same values under all the Authority fields. Different profiles, of course. So the certificate I used is eligible to upload the iOS app successfully but doesn't work on the VisionOS ipa? Any help on solving any of these issues would be great so I can upload the vision OS app. Thank you!

Debugger Issue After Installing macOS Tahoe 26.0.1
After upgrading to macOS Tahoe 26.0.1, I encountered an issue where the debugger could no longer display standard C++ library types such as std::map, std::string, and other std:: containers. Instead, the debugger simply showed: Summary Unavailable 🧪 What I Tried • Switched from the default LLVM compiler to GDB to check if it was a debugger-related problem — no improvement. • Cleaned and rebuilt the project — the issue persisted. ✅ Solution Downgrading Xcode to version 16.4 immediately resolved the issue. According to Apple’s official Xcode support documentation, Xcode 16.4 is compatible with macOS Sequoia 15.6 and later, which includes macOS Tahoe 26.0.1. This suggests that the problem may be caused by a compatibility issue in the latest Command Line Tools bundled with newer versions of Xcode. 💡 Takeaway If you encounter the same problem: 1. Try downgrading to Xcode 16.4 or reinstalling the corresponding Command Line Tools. 2. Make sure your debugger (LLDB or GDB) is correctly linked to the appropriate SDK version. Hopefully this helps anyone experiencing the same issue!

Built in ssh-add doesn't read ~/.ssh/config
I'm trying to authenticate to a git host using SSH keys stored in 1Password. I have ~/.ssh/config with mode 600 set with a symlink: Host * IdentityAgent "~/.1password/agent.sock" But ssh-add -l shows no identities. If I set $SSH_AUTH_SOCK, ssh-add -l works just fine. I'd love to not have to do this, though. Why doesn't ssh-add seem to read ~/.ssh/config? The built-in version is OpenSSH_10.0p2, LibreSSL 3.3.6. I've searched fruitlessly for an answer anywhere else.

xcodebuild fails if build tool plugins are installed
After having built the SwiftUI project numerous times from Xcode and allowing the plugins after the first build post install using xcodebuild -scheme <SchemeName> build fails with: The following build commands failed: Validate plug-in “SwiftLintBuildToolPlugin” in package “swiftlintplugins” Validate plug-in “OpenAPIGenerator” in package “swift-openapi-generator” How are we supposed to grant the plugins permission to run in the CLI? Everything I'm getting from Gemini is for packages, not apps.

Terminal Command to get the same file count as Get Info in finder
Hi All, I am looking for a terminal command to get the exact same output as the file count you recieve when using Get Info in finder. The closest i can get is using the find command with flags: find 'path/to/folder' -not -path '*/\.*' -and -not -path '*\.key/*' -and -not -path '*\.numbers/*' -and -not -path '*\.pages/*' -and -not -path '*__MACOSX/*' -and -not -path '*\.pdf/*' -and -not -path '*\.app/*' -and -not -path '*\.rtfd/*' | wc -l I will be searching on an external volume that sometimes produces keynote save files that finder sometimes sees as a package and sometimes sees as a folder. If a folder finder counts the items contained if a package it doesn't, I need the command or script to mimic this behaviour. In the example of the screenshot get info on the top folder produces a count of 14 and the find command produces a count of 23. There are also other behaviours that differ the file count between them but i'm not sure what causes them. Any help on a solution it being a command or script would be much apreciated. Thanks, James

Xcodebuild does not find any simulators
I am trying to integrate fastlane, which relies on xcodebuild. So this is my first experience with xcodebuild. Whenever I run a command to test or build the target in the folder where all the files of the project are stored, the action failes with Unable to find a device matching the provided destination specifier For example I might be running this command: xcodebuild \ -project Hoerspielzentrale.xcodeproj \ -scheme HoerspielzentraleUITests \ -destination 'platform=iOS Simulator,name="Screenshot Simulator”' \ test However the mentioned error is returned: xcodebuild: error: Unable to find a device matching the provided destination specifier: { platform:iOS Simulator, OS:latest, name:"Screenshot Simulator” } The requested device could not be found because no available devices matched the request. I can confirm that the simulator exists, is available and it can be booted. I have tried different simulators, different schemas, referencing them by their identifier, switching Xcode Versions, reset all simulators, derived data and build folder. After the error a complete list of all available destinations can be found, where I can see the simulator I try to use. Unable to find a team with the given Content Provider ID With xcodebuild -authenticationKeyIssuerID command

xcodebuild - xcresult equivalent for the build action?
I just discovered xcresulttool - provided with the Xcode Command Line Tools. It does an amazing job generating a JSON report of warnings/failures. The tool requires a xcresult file path - my issue is that xcodebuild build does not produce an xcresult file so I can't find a way to generate a similar report for that action. My use case is simple - in my CI job, I want to report back on specific failures during builds and tests. I run xcodebuild build-for-testing and then later xcodebuild test-without-building. If there is a failure during the test phase, I can easily parse the issues from the JSON report in xcresult. However, if there is a failure during build, there is no result file to parse from. What is more confusing is that if you run xcodebuild test (build and test in one command) compilation errors are put in the xcresult file and you can read them just fine with xcresulttool. Is there any way to get a failure report from xcodebuild build actions without parsing stdout/stderror? I am aware of 3rd party tools such as xcpretty or xcbeautify - I would like to avoid anything that requires parsing the output.

Can DEVELOPER_DIR or xcode-select support Command Line Tools at custom paths?
I'm trying to manage multiple Command Line Tools versions side-by-side (e.g., 16.2 and 26.2). I renamed the CLT directory to /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools-26.2.0 and set: xcode-select -s /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools-26.2.0 or DEVELOPER_DIR=/Library/Developer/CommandLineTools-26.2.0 Both result in: c++: error: unable to find Xcode installation from active developer path "/Library/Developer/CommandLineTools-26.2.0" It appears CLT only works at the fixed path /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools, unlike Xcode which can be at any location. Is this by design? Is there a supported way to use multiple CLT versions in parallel, similar to how multiple Xcode versions can coexist?

Can't specify platform version for xcodebuild download 26.x
Prior to iOS 26.0 we were able to download specific simulator runtimes from the command line by using a command like xcodebuild -downloadPlatform iOS -buildVersion 18.0 This is described in the documentation here. This no longer works for 26.x. If I run the following command: "xcodebuild -downloadPlatform iOS -buildVersion 26.0" it fails with the following error: "Finding content... iOS 26.0 is not available for download." If I omit the -buildVersion flag it will download the latest version, currently 26.2, but if I try and specify 26.2 as the buildVersion I still get "iOS 26.2 is not available for download". This behavior has been confirmed on Xcode 26.2. Perhaps related, it appears these runtimes are also no longer being made available for download on https://developer.apple.com/download/all

Inconsistency in returning nanoseconds in /bin/date
I am using macOS’s /bin/date command, both in Terminal and via AppleScript (do shell script). I noticed inconsistent behaviour with the %N format specifier for nanoseconds: • On some Macs, date +%s%N returns numeric nanoseconds as expected. • On other Macs, the same command returns a literal N or fails when coerced to a number. • This occurs across different macOS versions and on both Intel and Apple Silicon machines. My understanding is that macOS ships BSD date, which does not officially document %N. I am trying to determine: 1. Is %N in /bin/date officially supported on macOS, and if so, on which versions? 2. If %N is not supported, what is Apple’s recommended, portable method for obtaining sub-second or millisecond timestamps in shell scripts or AppleScript across all macOS versions?

Attach a debugger to app launched via `devicectrl`
With the latest (26) version of Apple's developer tools, is there a way to manually attach a debugger (other than lldb) to an iOS app launched with "devicectl device process launch --start-stopped"? In the past, this was possible via the ios-deploy third-party tool (now defunct), which provided a debugserver port. This information is notably missing when using devicectrl – although the process ID of the launch process is provided, and the tool is clearly aimed at letting you launch and attach to processes from the command line. lldb can, of course, attach via its built-in support for this using the device set of commands. But I'm explicitly looking for a way to attach my own debugger via the GDB-compatible debug proxy.

So the certificate I used is eligible to upload the iOS app successfully but doesn't work on the VisionOS ipa? Debugger Issue After Installing macOS Tahoe 26.0.1
After upgrading to macOS Tahoe 26.0.1, I encountered an issue where the debugger could no longer display standard C++ library types such as std::map, std::string, and other std:: containers. Instead, the debugger simply showed: Summary Unavailable 🧪 What I Tried • Switched from the default LLVM compiler to GDB to check if it was a debugger-related problem — no improvement. • Cleaned and rebuilt the project — the issue persisted. ✅ Solution Downgrading Xcode to version 16.4 immediately resolved the issue. According to Apple’s official Xcode support documentation, Xcode 16.4 is compatible with macOS Sequoia 15.6 and later, which includes macOS Tahoe 26.0.1. This suggests that the problem may be caused by a compatibility issue in the latest Command Line Tools bundled with newer versions of Xcode. 💡 Takeaway If you encounter the same problem: 1. Try downgrading to Xcode 16.4 or reinstalling the corresponding Command Line Tools. 2. Make sure your debugger (LLDB or GDB) is correctly linked to the appropriate SDK version. Built in ssh-add doesn't read ~/.ssh/config
I'm trying to authenticate to a git host using SSH keys stored in 1Password. I have ~/.ssh/config with mode 600 set with a symlink: Host * IdentityAgent "~/.1password/agent.sock" But ssh-add -l shows no identities. If I set $SSH_AUTH_SOCK, ssh-add -l works just fine. I'd love to not have to do this, though. Why doesn't ssh-add seem to read ~/.ssh/config? The built-in version is OpenSSH_10.0p2, LibreSSL 3.3.6. I've searched fruitlessly for an answer anywhere else.

xcodebuild fails if build tool plugins are installed
After having built the SwiftUI project numerous times from Xcode and allowing the plugins after the first build post install using xcodebuild -scheme <SchemeName> build fails with: The following build commands failed: Validate plug-in “SwiftLintBuildToolPlugin” in package “swiftlintplugins” Validate plug-in “OpenAPIGenerator” in package “swift-openapi-generator” How are we supposed to grant the plugins permission to run in the CLI? Everything I'm getting from Gemini is for packages, not apps.

Terminal Command to get the same file count as Get Info in finder
Hi All, I am looking for a terminal command to get the exact same output as the file count you recieve when using Get Info in finder. The closest i can get is using the find command with flags: find 'path/to/folder' -not -path '*/\.*' -and -not -path '*\.key/*' -and -not -path '*\.numbers/*' -and -not -path '*\.pages/*' -and -not -path '*__MACOSX/*' -and -not -path '*\.pdf/*' -and -not -path '*\.app/*' -and -not -path '*\.rtfd/*' | wc -l I will be searching on an external volume that sometimes produces keynote save files that finder sometimes sees as a package and sometimes sees as a folder. If a folder finder counts the items contained if a package it doesn't, I need the command or script to mimic this behaviour. In the example of the screenshot get info on the top folder produces a count of 14 and the find command produces a count of 23. There are also other behaviours that differ the file count between them but i'm not sure what causes them. Any help on a solution it being a command or script would be much apreciated. Thanks, James

I want to side load a .ipa file from a Mac to iPhone connected to Mac via USB. I don't want to use ABM or enterprise account. Also these can be any number of unknown devices. Is there any way to set this up automatically?

Xcodebuild does not find any simulators
I am trying to integrate fastlane, which relies on xcodebuild. So this is my first experience with xcodebuild. Whenever I run a command to test or build the target in the folder where all the files of the project are stored, the action failes with Unable to find a device matching the provided destination specifier For example I might be running this command: xcodebuild \ -project Hoerspielzentrale.xcodeproj \ -scheme HoerspielzentraleUITests \ -destination 'platform=iOS Simulator,name="Screenshot Simulator”' \ test However the mentioned error is returned: xcodebuild: error: Unable to find a device matching the provided destination specifier: { platform:iOS Simulator, OS:latest, name:"Screenshot Simulator” } The requested device could not be found because no available devices matched the request. I can confirm that the simulator exists, is available and it can be booted. I have tried different simulators, different schemas, referencing them by their identifier, switching Xcode Versions, reset all simulators, derived data and build folder. After the error a complete list of all available destinations can be found, where I can see the simulator I try to use. xcodebuild - xcresult equivalent for the build action?
I just discovered xcresulttool - provided with the Xcode Command Line Tools. It does an amazing job generating a JSON report of warnings/failures. The tool requires a xcresult file path - my issue is that xcodebuild build does not produce an xcresult file so I can't find a way to generate a similar report for that action. My use case is simple - in my CI job, I want to report back on specific failures during builds and tests. I run xcodebuild build-for-testing and then later xcodebuild test-without-building. If there is a failure during the test phase, I can easily parse the issues from the JSON report in xcresult. However, if there is a failure during build, there is no result file to parse from. What is more confusing is that if you run xcodebuild test (build and test in one command) compilation errors are put in the xcresult file and you can read them just fine with xcresulttool. Is there any way to get a failure report from xcodebuild build actions without parsing stdout/stderror? I am aware of 3rd party tools such as xcpretty or xcbeautify - I would like to avoid anything that requires parsing the output.

Can DEVELOPER_DIR or xcode-select support Command Line Tools at custom paths?
I'm trying to manage multiple Command Line Tools versions side-by-side (e.g., 16.2 and 26.2). I renamed the CLT directory to /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools-26.2.0 and set: xcode-select -s /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools-26.2.0 or DEVELOPER_DIR=/Library/Developer/CommandLineTools-26.2.0 Both result in: c++: error: unable to find Xcode installation from active developer path "/Library/Developer/CommandLineTools-26.2.0" It appears CLT only works at the fixed path /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools, unlike Xcode which can be at any location. Is this by design? Is there a supported way to use multiple CLT versions in parallel, similar to how multiple Xcode versions can coexist?

Can't specify platform version for xcodebuild download 26.x
Prior to iOS 26.0 we were able to download specific simulator runtimes from the command line by using a command like xcodebuild -downloadPlatform iOS -buildVersion 18.0 This is described in the documentation here. This no longer works for 26.x. If I run the following command: "xcodebuild -downloadPlatform iOS -buildVersion 26.0" it fails with the following error: "Finding content... iOS 26.0 is not available for download." If I omit the -buildVersion flag it will download the latest version, currently 26.2, but if I try and specify 26.2 as the buildVersion I still get "iOS 26.2 is not available for download". This behavior has been confirmed on Xcode 26.2. Perhaps related, it appears these runtimes are also no longer being made available for download on https://developer.apple.com/download/all

Inconsistency in returning nanoseconds in /bin/date
I am using macOS’s /bin/date command, both in Terminal and via AppleScript (do shell script). I noticed inconsistent behaviour with the %N format specifier for nanoseconds: • On some Macs, date +%s%N returns numeric nanoseconds as expected. • On other Macs, the same command returns a literal N or fails when coerced to a number. • This occurs across different macOS versions and on both Intel and Apple Silicon machines. My understanding is that macOS ships BSD date, which does not officially document %N. I am trying to determine: 1. Is %N in /bin/date officially supported on macOS, and if so, on which versions? 2. If %N is not supported, what is Apple’s recommended, portable method for obtaining sub-second or millisecond timestamps in shell scripts or AppleScript across all macOS versions?

Is there a plan to finally document the PackageInfo file format?
Q. Is there a plan to finally document the PackageInfo file format used in .pkg flat package? The man page for pkgbuild is not really useful to understand the different options. It does not seem to make sense to have an official documentation for the Distribution Definition file but not for the PackageInfo file.

Attach a debugger to app launched via `devicectrl`
With the latest (26) version of Apple's developer tools, is there a way to manually attach a debugger (other than lldb) to an iOS app launched with "devicectl device process launch --start-stopped"? In the past, this was possible via the ios-deploy third-party tool (now defunct), which provided a debugserver port. This information is notably missing when using devicectrl – although the process ID of the launch process is provided, and the tool is clearly aimed at letting you launch and attach to processes from the command line. lldb can, of course, attach via its built-in support for this using the device set of commands. But I'm explicitly looking for a way to attach my own debugger via the GDB-compatible debug proxy.
