I was playing around a bit with the new AttributedString and a few questions came up.
I saw this other forum question "JSON encoding of AttributedString with custom attributes", but I did not completely understand the answer and how I would need to use it.
I created my custom attribute where I just want to store additional text like this:

I guess it makes sense, that both SwiftUI.ForegroundColor and SwiftUI.Font are empty, because they both do not conform to Codable protocol.
My first question would be: Why does my additionalText attribute not show up here?
I next tried to extend Color to make it codable like this:

But it looks like even though Color is now codable, the encoding function does not get called when I try to put my attributed string into the JSONEncoder.
So my next question is: Does it just not work? Or do I also miss something here?
Coming to my last question: If JSONEncoder does not work, how would I store an AttributedString to disk?
Hiya 👋! While loading some data, I'm having issues decoding arrays of basic types, specifically Int and Bool – they return nil. My app has existing data (live on the App Store for years) that is saved and loaded using NSKeyedArchiver. I'm updating to support a newer iOS version, which requires me now to adhere to NSSecureCoding. As I understand, NSSecureCoding needs strict type definitions, and it will return nil if things are ambiguous (for security reasons).
Essentially as I load data, it all works when I use strict types, like Int and Bool, because the methods themselves are strict: decodeInteger(forKey:) and decodeBool(forKey:). However, if I want to decode something more complex, like NSDate or basic type arrays (in my case [Int], [[[Int]]], [Bool] and [[Bool]]), I assume I have to decode an object: decodeObject(of:forKey:). While I was able to make NSDate work by forcing the type (decodeObject(of: NSDate.self, forKey: "modifyDate")! as Date), getting arrays to decode is proving difficult. They always return nil.
I've now tried forcing the type to different arrays, including NSArray, and listing array types. I also tried decodeArrayOfObjects(ofClass:forKey:), but no luck.

Here are attempts with Int (same with Bool) arrays, which are erroneously decoded (these all either get compiler errors or return nil):

The funny thing is I don't even remotely need security. My data is for song compositions in an entertainment app, so it's strictly loaded and saved to device by my own code without networking, hashing or anything else being involved. Nevertheless I'm now stuck on this 😥.
How do I decode arrays (without returning nil)?
Are there any differences (either performance or memory considerations) between removing an array of model objects directly using .removeAll() vs using modelContext? Or, are they identical?

We have a Push-To-Talk application, which also allow user's to share the PDF file documents.
On receiving a PDF file document, which has a space in its file name.
On saving the document in the DB with space. When user is trying to access the PDF file, in order to rule out issues where there can be special character's in its file name, we are encoding the file name using stringByAddingPercentEncodingWithAllowedCharacters, and URLPathAllowedCharacterSet is the character set used which converts space character (" ") to %20.
Later, path of the same encoded file name is sent to fileURLWithPath:.
When the encoded URL is passed to [NSFileManager fileExistsAtPath:] the file is not found in the since in DB, file is saved with a space, but in the URL %20 is been swapped in-place of space character.
Issue case: Here, on passing the same encoded URL path of the PDF file to [NSFileManager fileExistsAtPath:] is returning false;
Query: On passing the filename with spaces encoded with stringByAddingPercentEncodingWithAllowedCharacters to [NSFileManager fileExistsAtPath:], the path is not converted back to the decoded file name and returning false
We have used a work around on this case, by forming the URL of the PDF file without encoding and passing it to fileURLWithPath, issue is not seen here.
We have a query here, i.e. will fileURLWithPath will be able to handle different special characters without encoding.

I properly copy a scrFile to a dstFile with
mManager = [NSFileManager defaultManager];
[mManager copyItemAtPath:srcPath toPath:dstPath error:&error];
but on "some destination disks" the dstFile gets a modificationDate with truncated milliseconds. For instance, with this format

After the copyItemAtPath I even unsuccessfully tried to set the dstFile modificationDate this way

FSSetCatalogInfo(&dstRef, fsInfo, &srcFsCatInfo);
No way. I noticed that the destination disk is an USB External Physical Volume, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with "Ignore Ownership on this volume" on. Could this flag be the cause of the trouble? Shouldn't this flag regard only the files ownership?
This issue brings another trouble. Since the srcDate and the dstDate are not equal, my macOS app performing a backup, copies the srcFile to the dstFile again and again.
To workaround the trouble, I actually compare srcDate with dstDate after truncating their milliseconds. But I guess this is not a good practice.
Any idea on how to fix this trouble? Thanks.

I am experiencing a crash on iOS 18 for some devices when the app becomes active again after being inactive for one or two days, with the following details:

The crash occurs intermittently on certain devices, but I haven’t been able to reproduce it consistently. Based on the crash logs, it seems to be related to accessing an invalid or corrupted memory address. But if user try to uninstall the app or restart the device, the issue is gone .
Is this a known issue in iOS 18? Are there any official workarounds or fixes?
Could this be related to specific device configurations, such as limited memory on older models?
Are there any known APIs or frameworks in iOS 18 that could trigger such an issue?
What additional debugging steps would you recommend to narrow down the root cause?
Have other developers encountered similar crashes in iOS 18?

I want to understand how it manages memory allocation if i need more memory later than the memory i specified during initialisation . Does it allocates new chunk of memory and dellocate older memory or does it already allocated more memory than i asked for in first place? Just want to understand how exactly this calculation is done ?
And i do initialisation of NSMutableString in swift , will these same principle of expension applied there ?

On iOS Bundle.main.preferredLocalizations returns the list of languages the application bundle supports in user-preferred order with the first element being the language the application is running in.
Additionally Locale.preferredLanguages returns the list of languages in the order they are presented in Preferences.app > General > Language & Region > Preferred Languages with the first element being the user's "primary language" (i.e. the language the system is running in).
However this only seems to be true unless the user has chosen a per-app language which is different from the primary language in which case Locale.preferredLanguages.first is equal to Bundle.main.preferredLocalizations.first - regardless of the latter's position in the Preferred Languages list.
Furthermore this seems to change depending on the value of the "AppleLanguages" key in the User Defaults' global domain (see c.f. https://stackoverflow.com/a/42648166).
Is this behaviour documented anywhere?

AppleLanguages is an implementation detail, not something that’s considered API.
Locale.preferredLanguages is API, though.
I'm trying to make an app that is able to quietly run in the background. It needs to detect other apps' or the system's incoming video and/or audio, using only on-device resources to determine if it might be a scam caller.
It will tap into an escalating cascade of resources to do so. For video/image scam detection, it uses OpenCV to detect faces, then refers to a known database of reported scam imagery. For audio scam calls, we defer to known techniques of voice modulation in frequency and/or amplitude. Each video and/or audio result will be relayed via notification banner as well as recorded in-app. Crucially, if the results are uncertain, users have the option to submit it to a global collaborative cloud database for investigative teams; 60 second audio snippets or series of images where faces were detected (60 second equivalent).
In the end, we expect to deploy this app across most parts of Asia and Africa, thereby protecting generations of iPhone and iPad users.
However, we have not been able to find a method that does this, and there is no known correspondance able to provide such technical guidance.

I'm trying to set up FIRDebugEnabled as launch arguments in app delegate based on user choice using ProcessInfo.processInfo.arguments. Which is working fine in iOS 17 and below devices and stoped working in iOS 18
Here is my sample,

I have received two strange crash reports from an iPad11,7 running iPadOS 15.1 and an iPad11,2 running iPadOS 15.2.
On both occasions, the crashed thread calls CFURLRequestSetMainDocumentURL, which in turn calls _dispatch_source_set_runloop_timer_4CF in libdispatch, after which the application crashes with SIGSEGV and SEGV_MAPERR.

Our app helps users block adult websites to promote focus and digital wellness. During the App Store review, it was flagged under Guideline 2.5.1 for using a VPN profile to block content, with Apple advising us to remove this feature.
Since blocking adult content is core to our app, we’re looking for compliant alternatives:
Can Network Extensions Framework (e.g., NEDNSProxyProvider) be used for on-device filtering?
Would pre-configured safe DNS (e.g., CleanBrowsing) be acceptable?
Are there compliant examples of similar apps?
Any advice on achieving this functionality within Apple’s guidelines would be greatly appreciated.

I have a dedicated render thread with a run loop that has a CADisplayLink added to it (that's the only input source attached). The render thread has this loop in it:

I have some code to stop the render thread that sets _continueRunLoop to false in a block, and then does a pthread_join on the render thread:

I have noticed recently (iOS 18?) that if the Display Link is paused or invalidated before trying to stop the loop then the pthread_join blocks forever and the render thread is still sitting in the runMode:beforeDate: method. If the display link is still active then it does exit the loop, but only after one more turn of the display link callback.
The most likely explanation I can think of is there has been a behaviour change to performBlock - I believe this used to "consume" a turn of the run loop, and exit the runMode:beforeDate call but now it happens without leaving that function.
I can't find specific mention in the docs of the expected behaviour for performBlock - just that other RunLoop input sources cause the run method to exit, and timer sources do not. Is it possible that the behaviour has changed here?

Is there an easy way to make it update?
We run simple iOS Swift code triggered by a remote notification:
UserDefaults.standard.set("key", forKey: "value")
It runs fine when the app is active or inactive, but when the device is closed/locked and the code is triggered, we see a warning in Xcode:

The issue is that there seems to be no way to catch that warning. The value is set, when it's re-read the value is correct. But the value is never written to disk, so after an app restart/update the value is gone, potentially has an old wrong value.
This code runs without any interruption, it's just showing the warning on iOS 17.7.1 on iPad:

Should there not be a way to catch this, so the code can act accordingly to the circumstances? It would be good to know inside the code that the value is not persisted. I would expect that an exception is generated somewhere which can be caught.
It seems .completeFileProtectionUntilFirstUserAuthentication enables files to be written to disk while the device is closed/locked, can something similar be used for UserDefaults.standard?
