How can I get the system to use my FSModule for probing?
I've gotten to the point where I can use the mount(8) command line tool and the -t option to mount a file system using my FSKit file system extension, in which case I can see a process for my extension launch, probe, and perform the other necessary actions. However, when plugging in my USB flash drive or trying to mount with diskutil mount, the file system does not mount: $ diskutil mount disk20s3 Volume on disk20s3 failed to mount If you think the volume is supported but damaged, try the "readOnly" option $ diskutil mount readOnly disk20s3 Volume on disk20s3 failed to mount If you think the volume is supported but damaged, try the "readOnly" option Initially I thought it would be enough to just implement probeExtension(resource:replyHandler:) and the system would handle the rest, but this doesn't seem to be the case. Even a trivial implementation that always returns .usable doesn't cause the system to use my FSModule, even though I've enabled my extension in System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions > File System Extensions. From looking at some of the open source msdos and Disk Arb code, it seems like my app extension needs to list FSMediaTypes to probe. I eventually tried putting this in my Info.plist of the app extension: <key>FSMediaTypes</key> <dict> <key>EBD0A0A2-B9E5-4433-87C0-68B6B72699C7</key> <dict> <key>FSMediaProperties</key> <dict> <key>Content Hint</key> <string>EBD0A0A2-B9E5-4433-87C0-68B6B72699C7</string> <key>Leaf</key> <true/> </dict> </dict> <key>0FC63DAF-8483-4772-8E79-3D69D8477DE4</key> <dict> <key>FSMediaProperties</key> <dict> <key>Content Hint</key> <string>0FC63DAF-8483-4772-8E79-3D69D8477DE4</string> <key>Leaf</key> <true/> </dict> </dict> <key>Whole</key> <dict> <key>FSMediaProperties</key> <dict> <key>Leaf</key> <true/> <key>Whole</key> <true/> </dict> </dict> <key>ext4</key> <dict> <key>FSMediaProperties</key> <dict> <key>Content Hint</key> <string>ext4</string> <key>Leaf</key> <true/> </dict> </dict> </dict> </plist> (For reference, the partition represented by disk20s3 has a Content Hint of 0FC63DAF-8483-4772-8E79-3D69D8477DE4 and Leaf is True which I verified using IORegistryExplorer.app from the Xcode additional tools.) Looking in Console it does appear now that the system is trying to use my module (ExtendFS_fskit) to probe when I plug in my USB drive, but I never see a process for my extension actually launch when trying to attach to it from Xcode by name (unlike when I use mount(8), where I can do this). However I do see a Can't find the extension for <private> error which I'm not sure is related but does sound like the system can't find the extension for some reason. The below messages are when filtering for "FSKit": default 19:14:53.455826-0400 diskarbitrationd probed disk, id = /dev/disk20s3, with ExtendFS_fskit, ongoing. default 19:14:53.456038-0400 fskitd Incomming connection, entitled 1 default 19:14:53.456064-0400 fskitd [0x7d4172e40] activating connection: mach=false listener=false peer=true name=com.apple.filesystems.fskitd.peer[350].0x7d4172e40 default 19:14:53.456123-0400 fskitd Hello FSClient! entitlement yes default 19:14:53.455902-0400 diskarbitrationd [0x7461d8dc0] activating connection: mach=true listener=false peer=false name=com.apple.filesystems.fskitd default 19:14:53.456151-0400 diskarbitrationd Setting remote protocol to all XPC default 19:14:53.456398-0400 fskitd About to get current agent for 501 default 19:14:53.457185-0400 diskarbitrationd probed disk, id = /dev/disk20s3, with ExtendFS_fskit, failure. error 19:14:53.456963-0400 fskitd -[fskitdXPCServer applyResource:targetBundle:instanceID:initiatorAuditToken:authorizingAuditToken:isProbe:usingBlock:]: Can't find the extension for <private> (I only see these messages after plugging my USB drive in. When running diskutil mount, I see no messages in the console when filtering by FSKit, diskarbitrationd, or ExtendFS afterward. It just fails.) Is there a step I'm missing to get this to work, or would this be an FSKit bug/current limitation?

IOBluetoothHandsFreeDevice API confusion
I wonder how one would use IOBluetoothHandsFree APIs to interact from macOS app with a bluetooth device that implements bluetooth hands free profile. My current observation is as follows: IOBluetoothDevice object representing the device correctly identifies it as a hands free device, i.e.: there is a proper record in services array, that matches the kBluetoothSDPUUID16ServiceClassHandsFree uuid, the IOBluetoothDevice handsFreeDevice property returns 1 Attempt to create IOBluetoothHandsFreeDevice using IOBluetoothDevice as described above (i.e. [[IOBluetoothHandsFreeDevice alloc] initWithDevice: myIOBluetoothDeviceThatHasHandsFreeDevicePropertySetTo1 delegate: self]) results in the following output in debugger console: SRS-XB20 is not a hands free device but trying anyways. Subsequent call to connect on an object constructed as above results in the following stream of messages: API MISUSE: <CBClassicPeer: 0x1442447b0 6D801974-5457-9ECE-0A9B-8343EC4F60AA, SRS-XB20, connected, Paired, b8:d5:0b:03:62:70, devType: 19, PID: 0x1582, VID: 0x0039> Invalid RFCOMM CID -[IOBluetoothRFCOMMChannel setupRFCOMMChannelForDevice] No channel <IOBluetoothRFCOMMChannel: 0x600003e5de00 SRS-XB20, b8-d5-0b-03-62-70, CID: 0, UUID: 110F > AddInstanceForFactory: No factory registered for id <CFUUID 0x600000b5e3e0> F8BB1C28-BAE8-11D6-9C31-00039315CD46 -[IOBluetoothRFCOMMChannel setupRFCOMMChannelForDevice] No channel <IOBluetoothRFCOMMChannel: 0x600003e5de00 SRS-XB20, b8-d5-0b-03-62-70, CID: 0, UUID: 110F > API MISUSE: <CBClassicPeer: 0x1442447b0 6D801974-5457-9ECE-0A9B-8343EC4F60AA, SRS-XB20, connected, Paired, b8:d5:0b:03:62:70, devType: 19, PID: 0x1582, VID: 0x0039> Invalid RFCOMM CID Note that this device's handsFreeServiceRecord looks as follows: ServiceName: Hands-free unit RFCOMM ChannelID: 1 Attributes: { 0 = "uint32(65539)"; 256 = "string(Hands-free unit)"; 9 = "{ { uuid32(00 00 11 1e), uint32(262) } }"; 785 = "uint32(63)"; 1 = "uuid32(00 00 11 1e)"; 6 = "{ uint32(25966), uint32(106), uint32(256) }"; 4 = "{ { uuid32(00 00 01 00) }, { uuid32(00 00 00 03), uint32(1) } }"; } and explicit attempt to open RFCOMM channel no 1 ends like this: WARNING: Unknown error: 911 Failed to open RFCOMM channel -[IOBluetoothRFCOMMChannel setupRFCOMMChannelForDevice] No channel <IOBluetoothRFCOMMChannel: 0x6000002036c0 SRS-XB20, b8-d5-0b-03-62-70, CID: 1, UUID: 111E > AddInstanceForFactory: No factory registered for id <CFUUID 0x600003719260> F8BB1C28-BAE8-11D6-9C31-00039315CD46 -[IOBluetoothRFCOMMChannel waitforChanneOpen] CID:1 - timed out waiting to open -[IOBluetoothDevice openRFCOMMChannelSync:withChannelID:delegate:] CID:1 error -536870212 call returned: -536870212

How to update the lock icon and text on the initial unlock Screen with SFAutorizationPluginView.
Step1. Update system.login.screensaver authorizationdb rule to use “authenticate-session-owner-or-admin”( to get old SFAutorizationPluginView at Lock Screen ). Here I will use my custom authorization plugin. Step 2. Once the rule is in place, logout and login, now click on Apple icon and select “Lock Screen”. Is there a way programmatically to update the Lock Icon and the test getting displayed on the first Unlock screen? When I write a custom authorisation plug-in, I am getting control of the text fields and any consecutive screen I add from there on. But all I want is to update the lock icon and text fields on 1st unlock display itself. Can you please suggest how I can achieve this? Here is the screenshot with marked areas I am looking control for.

CGContext PDF/A intents
let dic : [AnyHashable:Any] = [ kCGPDFXRegistryName: "http://www.color.org" as CFString, kCGPDFXOutputConditionIdentifier: "FOGRA43" as CFString, kCGPDFContextOutputIntent: "GTS_PDFX" as CFString, kCGPDFXOutputIntentSubtype: "GTS_PDFX" as CFString, kCGPDFContextCreateLinearizedPDF: "" as CFString, kCGPDFContextCreatePDFA: "" as CFString, kCGPDFContextAuthor: "Placeholder" as CFString, kCGPDFContextCreator: "Placeholder" as CFString ] Hello, Now I would like to export my PDF's as PDF/A. In my opinion, there is also the right option for this under Core Graphics. Unfortunately, the documentation does not show what is 'kCGPDFContextCreatePDFA' or 'kCGPDFContextLinearizedPDF' for a stringvalue is required. What I have already tried: GTS_PDFA1 , PDF/A-1, true as CFString. (Above my CFDictionary. ...Author e.g are working perfectly.) In the Finder you can see these two options, which I would also like to implement in my app. Thank you in advance!

Split tunnel w/o changing route table
I've built a VPN app that is based on wireguard on macOS (I have both AppStore ver. and Developer ID ver). I want to achieve split tunneling function without changing the system route table. Currently, I'm making changes in PacketTunnelProvider: NEPacketTunnelProvider. It has included/excluded routes that function as a split tunnel, just that all changes are immediately reflected on the route table: if I run netstat -rn in terminal, I would see all rules/CIDRs I added, displayed all at once. Since I have a CIDR list of ~800 entries, I'd like to avoid changing the route table directly. I've asked ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, .etc. An idea was to implement an 'interceptor' to intercept all packets in packetFlow(_:readPacketsWithCompletionHandler:), extract the destination IP from each packet, check if it matches your CIDR list, and either reinject it back to the system interface (for local routing) or process it through your tunnel. Well, LLMs could have hallucinations and I've pretty new to macOS programming. I'm asking to make sure I'm on the right track, not going delusional with those LLMs :) So the question is, does the above method sounds feasible? If not, is it possible to achieve split tunneling without changing the route table?

screencapturekit
I have code that captures a window and displays a cropped image. The problem is 2 fold. Kit doesn't seem to allow to modify stop and recapture image in window mode to capture a portion of the screen. So this makes me having to crop and display the cropped image via a published variable. This all works find. But seems to stop after some time. Using an M1 16gig ram. program is taking less than 100meg of mem with 40-70%cpu as the crow flies. printing captured success in debug mode and sometimes frame isn't valid so guarding against it. any ideas on how to improve my strategy?

Apple Script to Automate Web Page Plot Data
Can someone please help me: I do not have the brain space (85yo) to figure out an Apple Script or Java Script app to do this simple task. I have spent a few hours each day, over several days, and have made zero progress on such an apparently simple task. I wish to create an Automator App for the macOS Safari browser that will schedule (via a Calendar Event) the download of the 48hr data behind the hourly Fuel Mix Plot Data from the AEMO Web Site, every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Here is the link to the AEMO web site: AEMO, Energy Systems, Electricity, National Electricity Market (NEM), Data (NEM),Data Dashboard https://www.aemo.com.au/energy-systems/electricity/national-electricity-market-nem/data-nem/data-dashboard-nem The 48 hour hourly Fuel Mix data is found by selecting the "Fuel Mix" button (which by default will display the NEM Current Trend). The 48 hour trend is displayed by tapping on the small "Current" pulldown menu, and selecting "48 hrs". The 48hr Data is down loaded by selecting the small circular button just to the right of the pulldown menu. a) AEMO Web Site: https://www.aemo.com.au/energy-systems/electricity/national-electricity-market-nem/data-nem/data-dashboard-nem b) Main Menu, and underlying html, c) Fuel Mix menu, Pulldown list, DownLoad button, and underlying html, I am familiar with C++ and have built Xcode Apps, and used Excel Macros extensively in the past. Thank you. Robert.

Essentials of macOS to read and write mp3 and mp4 audio files
Hi, On macOS I used to open MP3 and MP4 files with ExtAudioFile. For a few years it doesn't work anymore. So I decided to try different macOS API using the AudioFileID of AudioToolbox framework. I decided to write a test: https://gist.github.com/joelkraehemann/7f5b241b52ca38c3a765c138fb647588 It fails right here: AudioFileOpenWithCallbacks() By telling OSStatus error 1954115647, which means kAudioFileUnsupportedFileTypeError. The filename was set to an MP4 file: ~/Music/test.mp4 Howto fix this? regards, Joël

MIDI Drag-and-drop to Logic Pro via NSItemProvider
Logic Pro recently changed the way it accepts drag and drop. If the ItemProvider contains UTType.midi, then Logic Pro shows visual feedback for the drop operation, but when the item is dropped, nothing happens. In the past, drag-and-drop used to work. With today's version (Logic Pro 11.2), the only way I was able to successfully drop MIDI was to provide UTType.fileURL and no other data types. But that's not a viable solution; I need other data types to be included too. As a side note, I tested with Ableton Live 12 and it works with no issue. Is this a bug in Logic Pro? What ItemProvider structure does Logic Pro expect to correctly receive the MIDI data?

macOS 26 Beta 1 on MacPro7,1 – WindowServer crash when opening Finder
I’m running macOS 26 Beta 1 (build 25A5279m) on a 2019 Mac Pro (MacPro7,1) with a single 4K display connected via HDMI. Whenever I attempt to launch Finder, WindowServer immediately aborts and the machine reboots. Crash details: Process: WindowServer (PID 1441) Exception: EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT) triggered in thread 0 (ws_main_thread) Termination Reason: Abort trap: 6 Backtrace highlights: CA::OGL::MetalContext::draw(MTLPrimitiveType, …) hits an internal __assert_rtn in libsystem_c.dylib Subsequent calls all stem from QuartzCore’s OpenGL/Metal bridge (CA::OGL::render_layers, LayerNode::apply, etc.) Related threads: Thread 2 (com.apple.coreanimation.render-server) idle in mach_msg_overwrite Thread 1 shows AmbientDisplay and ColorSync callbacks running Hardware/Software: MacPro7,1 (2019) macOS 26.0 Beta 1 (25A5279m) 4K monitor via HDMI System Integrity Protection enabled What I’ve tried so far: Safe-boot (crash still occurs) Switching display profiles in System Settings → Displays → Color (no effect) Happy to provide any additional logs or verbose console output. Let me know if there’s any other data that would help diagnose the Metal/OpenGL integration issue in this beta.

Building macOS apps with Xcode 26 on macOS 26 VM
I'm trying to setup a macOS 26 build environment in a VM (using UTM and the virtualization framework Apple provides). I have Xcode 26 installed and have logged into my Apple ID and verified that the team and other configuration looks fine in Xcode settings. When trying to build the macOS app, I see errors saying the VM's device ID has not been registered. I have confirmed that the device ID is registered both in the Provisioning portal AND the downloaded .provisionprofiles (in Library > Developer > Xcode > UserData). This problem appears on multiple targets (e.g. the main app and extensions). If I try to manually provision the app, using the Provisioning portal, I can build the product, but it will not launch because of Gatekeeper issues. Finally, signing to run locally doesn't work either. As the app launches, frameworks refuse to load because Team IDs don't match. With ad hoc provisioning, there are no Team IDs. I've come to the conclusion that this just isn't possible. Which is a shame because I need to support products with a build environment on macOS 15 and cannot move over to macOS 26 yet. I suspect many developers outside of Apple are in a similar position.

What will happen to Rosetta 2 in 2027/macOS 28
"Rosetta was designed to make the transition to Apple silicon easier, and we plan to make it available for the next two major macOS releases – through macOS 27 – as a general-purpose tool for Intel apps to help developers complete the migration of their apps. Beyond this timeframe, we will keep a subset of Rosetta functionality aimed at supporting older unmaintained gaming titles, that rely on Intel-based frameworks." What will happen to Rosetta 2 then? Most importantly, will the ability to emulate x86_64 containers and binaries in virtual machines persist? Will Rosetta 2 be blocked only from the App Store? Will apps be barred from Rosetta, only games be able to use it? Will it only support frameworks?

Can Game Mode be activated when a child (Java) process's window is fullscreened?
Imagine a native macOS app that acts as a "launcher" for a Java game.** For example, the "launcher" app might use the Swift Process API or a similar method to run the java command line tool (lets assume the user has installed Java themselves) to run the game. I have seen How to Enable Game Mode. If the native launcher app's Info.plist has the following keys set: LSApplicationCategoryType set to public.app-category.games LSSupportsGameMode set to true (for macOS 26+) GCSupportsGameMode set to true The launcher itself can cause Game Mode to activate if the launcher is fullscreened. However, if the launcher opens a Java process that opens a window, then the Java window is fullscreened, Game Mode doesn't seem to activate. In this case activating Game Mode for the launcher itself is unnecessary, but you'd expect Game Mode to activate when the actual game in the Java window is fullscreened. Is there a way to get Game Mode to activate in the latter case? ** The concrete case I'm thinking of is a third-party Minecraft Java Edition launcher, but the issue can also be demonstrated in a sample project (FB13786152). It seems like the official Minecraft launcher is able to do this, though it's not clear how. (Is its bundle identifier hardcoded in the OS to allow for this? Changing a sample app's bundle identifier to be the same as the official Minecraft launcher gets the behavior I want, but obviously this is not a practical solution.)

Can child processes inherit Info.plist properties of a parent app (such as LSSupportsGameMode)?
My high-level goal is to add support for Game Mode in a Java game, which launches via a macOS "launcher" app that runs the actual java game as a separate process (e.g. using the java command line tool). I asked this over in the Graphics & Games section and was told this, which is why I'm reposting this here. I'm uncertain how to speak to CLI tools and Java games launched from a macOS app. These sound like security and sandboxing questions which we recommend you ask about in those sections of the forums. The system seems to decide whether to enable Game Mode based on values in the Info.plist (e.g. for LSApplicationCategoryType and GCSupportsGameMode). However, the child process can't seem to see these values. Is there a way to change that? (The rest of this post is copied from my other forums post to provide additional context.) Imagine a native macOS app that acts as a "launcher" for a Java game.** For example, the "launcher" app might use the Swift Process API or a similar method to run the java command line tool (lets assume the user has installed Java themselves) to run the game. Using restricted entitlements in a macOS 26 VM
We have a Mac app that uses some restricted macOS entitlements, thus to test it we embed a development provisioning profile, that needs to contain the correct provisioning UDID. Typically, for test VMs, we extract the provisioning and UDID and add it to the developer portal and then re-generate the provisioning profiles. However when we try to do this in our newly created VM (Apple Silicon), our executable won't run, and macOS logs that the provisioning profile doesn't allow the device: 2025-06-12 12:37:52.168 E taskgated-helper[27489:e97da] [com.apple.ManagedClient:ProvisioningProfiles] embedded provisioning profile not valid: file:///Applications/foo.app/Contents/embedded.provisionprofile error: Error Domain=CPProfileManager Code=-212 "Provisioning profile does not allow this device." Even after letting Xcode itself register the device, it says that "this device not registered to your account" and then when I click "Register device" it changes into " already exists". Has anyone else managed to get Mac development provisioning profiles to work in a VM?

WKNavigationDelegate methods not getting called even though
Hi everyone, We work on a macOS plugin which then gets loaded into another application. I'm trying to load a webpage in that application through our plugin using a WKWebView & I set my class as the navigationDelegate for the same. I do not receive any callbacks for the WKNavigationDelegate methods. I have debugged & made sure that the navigationDelegate is actually set to my class. Here is a sample code of what I'm doing : [[NSApplication sharedApplication] runModalForWindow:self.mWindowController.window]; - (void)windowDidLoad { [super windowDidLoad]; [self.window makeKeyAndOrderFront:self]; [self.window orderFrontRegardless]; if (self.mLoadingView == nil) { self.mLoadingView = [[LoadingView alloc] initWithFrame:[[self.window contentView] frame]]; } [[self.window contentView] addSubview:self.mLoadingView]; [self.mLoadingView showLoadingView]; [self.window setLevel:NSMainMenuWindowLevel]; [self loadWebPage]; } -(void)loadWebPage { [self.mWKWebView setUIDelegate:self]; [self.mWKWebView setNavigationDelegate:self]; [self.mWKWebView stopLoading]; NSURL *lURL = [self samplePageURL]; WKNavigation *lNavigation = [self.mWKWebView loadRequest:[NSURLRequest requestWithURL:lURL]]; } - (void)webView:(WKWebView *)pWKWebView didFinishNavigation:(WKNavigation *)pNavigation { [self removeLoadingview]; [self.mWKWebView evaluateJavaScript:@"document.body.setAttribute('oncontextmenu', 'event.preventDefault();');" completionHandler:nil]; } I do not get any calls in the webView:didFinishNavigation: & I also tried other methods like webView:didStartProvisionalNavigation, webView:didFailProvisionalNavigation:withError: etc but did not receive any call in those either. Instead of runModalForWindow: if I use showWindow: on the mWindowController the webpage somehow loads but I still don't get any callbacks & so the loadingview subview is also present. The WKWebView is placed in a storyboard, and I have an IBOutlet connected to it in my class. Has anyone faced a similar issue or can point me to something I might be missing? All help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Supporting Dark and Tinted versions of App Icons on macOS
When exporting an icon using Icon Composer Beta for macOS 26, a light, dark and tinted versions for macOS are created, but I was not able to find how to use them on the Xcode Project. I also tried finding something pointing to that on documentation, but I was not able to find anything. I see that system apps have light, dark and tinted versions on the first beta of macOS 26, which leads me to believe it would be possible for third-party apps to do that same.

The filename was set to an MP4 file: ~/Music/test.mp4 Howto fix this? regards, Joël

macOS support AppTrackingTransparency ?
https://developer.apple.com/documentation/apptrackingtransparency/attrackingmanager/authorizationstatus/notdetermined Note: Discussion If you call ATTrackingManager.trackingAuthorizationStatus in macOS, the result is always ATTrackingManager.AuthorizationStatus.notDetermined. So, does macOS support getting ATT?

Will it only support frameworks?

macOS 26 beta: Natural Scrolling (disable) option removed from System Settings?
I installed the WWDC beta on UTM and I'm unable to find the option to disable the so-called "Natural Scrolling". Has this been removed and if so, can we get it put back? I use a mouse with scroll wheel and everything is going opposite the direction I expect in the macOS 26 VM.
